For Todd, an award-winning TV reporter, it's a murder case that has put his relationship with policeman Steve Rawlins in jeopardy and spread a deadly chill through Minneapolis's gay world.

The victim was a young man on the run from his past. Somewhere, Rawlins met the boy, and now Todd believes Rawlins offered him more than guidance. While Todd is getting a once-in-a-lifetime shot at a very personal interview with Tim Chase, he suddenly realizes that the murder may touch the actor and his entourage. And now the story is not about innuendo. It's about the secrets that rage behind public masquerades. Including the kind that kill …

New UK Trailer for Lawless

Lawless (2012)

A UK trailer for the crime thriller Lawless has been released by the studio; we've embedded it below.

Set in the 1920s prohibition era America, the film is the true story of the Bondurant brothers. Brazen and fearless, these young rural bootleggers became legendary criminals. The youngest brother, Jack (Shia LaBeouf) is ambitious and impulsive, the middle brother, Howard (Jason Clarke), is loyal but reckless and eldest brother, Forrest (Tom Hardy), leads the family with a silent determination. As the Bondurants' illicit business and legend grows, so too looms the danger of bigger fish, and it's not long before the brothers must face the consequences.

Directed by John Hillcoat from a screenplay by Nick Cave adapted from the book The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant, Lawless opens in US theaters August 29th, 2012. (It opens in UK theaters September 7th, 2012.)

New Poster for Copper

Copper (BBC America, August 2012)

A new poster — a variant of the teaser from April — has been released by BBC America for its new historical crime drama Copper (right; click for larger image).

This poster highlights the series' creators — Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana — over its stars; indeed both Levinson and Fontana have been featured prominently in all the videos to date as well.

But the series does have a star, Tom Weston-Jones as Kevin Corcoran — the titular character — an intense, rugged Irish-immigrant cop working the New York City's notorious Five Points neighborhood in 1864. Corcoran is struggling to maintain his moral compass in a turbulent world while on an emotional and relentless quest to learn the truth about the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter.

The first full-length trailer came out earlier this week for Copper, which premieres on BBC America on August 19th, 2012 at 10 PM (ET/PT).

White Collar Season 4 Promotional Poster, Video

White Collar Season 4 (USA Network, July 2012)

The fourth season of White Collar premieres next week and in addition to a preview video (embedded below) we found a promo poster we hadn't seen before (right; click for slightly larger image). There was the Magic Mike take-off, so to speak, but we didn't care much for it.

Last season ended with Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) on the run. This season starts with Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) trying to discover where he's run to.

White Collar is one of our "must see" television crime/caper dramas, one which has only gotten better with each successive season. Season Four premieres this coming Tuesday, July 10th, on USA Network. (Don't worry; we'll remind you Monday afternoon!)

Inspector Lewis Series 5 Premieres Sunday, July 8th, on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery!

Inspector Lewis Series V (PBS Masterpiece Mystery!, July 2012)

Inspector Lewis returns to PBS's Masterpiece Mystery! this weekend with the first of four new episodes in its fifth season.

In "The Soul of a Genius" and airing this Sunday, July 8th — check your local listings — botanist Liz Nash (guest star Nadine Lewington) discovers a corpse in the woods downriver from Carlyle College that has been ritually buried with a watch inscribed in Latin and a cross fashioned from sticks. The murder victim, Oxford English professor Murray Hawes, was known around the university as a harmless eccentric obsessed with Lewis Carroll's cryptic poem The Hunting of the Snark. This legendary theological and philosophical work, Hathaway elucidates, presents an impossible quest in which the hunters don't know what they're looking for, yet the danger is in finding it. Scholars and monomaniacs alike have devoted their lives to cracking The Snark's unfathomable code.

And so Detective Inspector Robert Lewis (Kevin Whatley) and Detective Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox) embark on an impossible quest of their own, from the Oxford botanical gardens, where Hawes regularly foraged for meaning, to the office of Carlyle's Reverend Dr. Conor Hawes (Alex Jennings), Murray's estranged brother. Conor makes no secret of his bitter rivalry with Murray, but he is somehow connected to a secret society at Carlyle College, an exclusive club whose coveted membership two goth students, Vincent and Mia, are desperately trying to secure.

In a case already mired in layers of mystery, Lewis contends with another obstacle, the maddening amateur sleuth Michelle Marber (Celia Imrie). This self-styled Miss Marple attempts to redirect suspicions to a local medical researcher, Dr. Alex Falconer (James Fleet), but Michelle too harbors secrets. Hathaway, equally enamored of the philosophical text and botanist Liz Nash, is restless. But when a second death brings the inscrutable into terrifying clarity, Lewis and Hathaway move to catch the killer and put the soul of genius to rest.

The Caveman's Valentine, Free to Watch on Hulu

Caveman's Valentine (2001)

For the past few weeks we've featured free mystery movies available to view online.

This week's title: The Caveman's Valentine, currently available to watch for free on Hulu.

In 1994, George Dawes Green's debut crime thriller was published. Titled The Caveman's Valentine, it features a most unusual protagonist, Romulus Ledbetter, a delusional music prodigy, now homeless and living in a cave in Manhattan's Inwood Park. The following year the book was honored with an Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

In 2001 the film adaptation of the book was released, starring Samuel L. Jackson in the role of Romulus Ledbetter.

On Valentine's Day, Romulus discovers the frozen body of a young man, Scotty Gates (Sean MacMahon), left in a tree outside his cave. The police, including Romulus's daughter Lulu (Aunjanue Ellis), dismiss the man's death as accident however, a homeless ex-lover of Scotty tells Romulus that he was murdered by the famous photographer David Leppenraub (Colm Feore). Determined to discover the truth behind Scotty's death and prove his worth to his daughter, Romulus manages to get an invitation through a former friend to perform one of his compositions at Leppenraub's farm. What unfolds is a twisted tale of mystery, deception, and one man's struggle against his own mind.

In our review of the film, we called Samuel L. Jackson's performance "brilliant" though we faulted the screenwriter — and maybe the director — with spending a little too much time on the character's state of mind and not enough on developing the mystery plot.

The Caveman's Valentine is rated R for for language, some violence and sexuality. The film is also available on DVD.

Thrillers: 100 Must Reads by David Morrell and Hank Wagner, co-editors
Publisher: Oceanview Publishing

In our review of this collection, we said it "is not a reference work, nor is it marketed as such — it's far too subjective for that. But it does offer a relatively comprehensive and inclusive listing of those books written over the ages that have '[a]n unsettling theme, a menacing tone, or an insistent pace' … and possibly more importantly for modern readers, an intriguing glimpse into how these books have influenced — and continue to influence — today's thriller writers."

About Thrillers: 100 Must Reads (from the publisher): The most riveting reads in history meet today's biggest thriller writers in 100 seminal works of suspense through essays contributed by such esteemed modern thriller writers as: David Baldacci, Steve Berry, Sandra Brown, Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver, Tess Gerritsen, Heather Graham, John Lescroart, Gayle Lynds, Katherine Neville, Michael Palmer, James Rollins, R. L. Stine, and many more.

Through lively, spirited, and thoughtful essays that examine each work's significance, impact, and influence, this collection provides both historical and personal perspective on those spellbinding works that have kept readers on the edge of their seats for centuries.
