Please Welcome Mystery Novelist Marilyn Levinson

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post

We are delighted to welcome crime novelist Marilyn Levinson as our guest blogger today.

Marilyn is the author of three — three! — mystery series, two of which are in print with the third soon to come.

Here she is to tell us a bit about her three amateur sleuths.

— ◊ —

We mystery writers create several characters for each novel we write. We have to, when you consider the number of murder victims and the necessary pool of suspects to draw from. One's sleuth is the most important character in the book, and I've taken great pleasure in creating each of my sleuths. Like me, they're all female, but that's where the resemblance ends. I doubt I could be as brave or as resourceful as Lydia, Gabbie, and Lexie.

Lydia Krause, my sleuth in A Murderer Among Us and Murder in the Air is an attractive, feisty fifty-eight-year-old woman, who has just made monumental changes in her life. After her beloved husband dies, she sells the company she owned and ran, and moves to Twin Lakes, an upscale retirement community. Her older daughter expects her to spend her days babysitting for her two daughters, but murder and mayhem soon demand much of Lydia's attention. Capable as ever, Lydia helps resolve her grown daughters' problems and takes on a part-time job as she forges new friendships and spars with homicide detective, Sol Molina

My sleuth in Giving Up the Ghost, thirty-five-year-old Gabbie Meyerson, comes to a small town in Long Island in midwinter to teach English at the local high school. Newly-divorced, after helping put her husband behind bars, Gabbie has barely enough money to pay her rent. As if starting a new life isn't enough, she discovers she's sharing her cottage with the ghost of Cameron Leeds. Cam persuades Gabbie to find out who murdered him. When not keeping a chapter ahead of her students and dealing with two bullies, Gabbie questions the townspeople, until Cam's murderer tries to kill her, too. Good thing she's struck up a friendship with the local lawman who was Cam's best friend, and who might become someone she could care for — if she isn't careful.

Lexie Driscoll, the sleuth in my third mystery series that hasn't been released, is another type entirely. A forty-eight-year-old English college professor with a penchant for going for the wrong type of man, Lexie has no home of her own because her second husband burned it down with him inside. Lexie moderates the Golden Age of Mystery book club. In Murder a la Christie, she housesits her recently murdered friend's home in upscale Old Cadfield while chasing after the murderer employing Hercules Poirot and Jane Marple's investigative methods. World-renown architect Allistair West and homicide detective Brian Donovan both like Lexie. In Murder the Tey Way she makes her choice.

In addition to her mystery novels, Marilyn Levinson writes books for kids and travels the world. You can learn more about her, her books, and her adventures on her website, MarilynLevinson.com, and her blog, Tides and Tidings.

First Trailer for Alex Cross

Alex Cross (2012)

Yesterday we featured a new poster for the film Alex Cross. Now the first trailer for the film has been released, and is available (apparently exclusively so far) on Amazon.com. Here is a link to the trailer for the film.

Tyler Perry stars as Alex Cross, who has vowed to hunt down Michael Sullivan (played by Matthew Fox), the man who murdered his wife.

The trailer says that the film is adapted from the novel Cross, the 12th book in the series by James Patterson, the storyline of which does have the detective tracking down his wife's killer, though it looks like the screenwriters took some liberties with the timing of the event.

Directed by Rob Cohen, Alex Cross opens in theaters October 26th, 2012.

Murder on the Waterfront by Michael Jahn

Murder on the Waterfront by Michael Jahn
Publisher: Michael Jahn

Originally published by Minotaur Books in 2001, this is the 8th mystery in the author's "New York City Mysteries" series with Bill Donovan.

About Murder on the Waterfront (from the publisher): Parties of vastly different orders rage aboard two ships docked side-by-side on Manhattan's legendary West Side waterfront. On the ultramodern, palatial, and pastel cruise liner Trinidad Princess, a conservative candidate for president presides over a posh fundraiser. On the ancient, barnacle-encrusted, and fashionably decadent Sevastopol Trader, the head of an ultra-chic modeling agency holds an all-night soiree of supermodels and who-knows what else to celebrate the launch of her perfume line. When dawn breaks the following day and the body of a top conservative political strategist is found in the litter-strewn hold of the old freighter, N.Y.P.D. Captain Bill Donovan is called in for the investigation.

Helped by his wife, the multiracial firecracker Marcy, and his friend and associate, Brooklyn's massively muscled Brian Moskowitz, Donovan delves into a web of waterfront intrigue that includes national politicians, global environmental activists, top fashion models, menacing harbor water rats, lonely homeless old men, waterfront regulars, and a host of New York eccentrics.

About 4 Gigs of Trouble (from the publisher): Toni Teitelbaum is a former US Marine MP, a curvy six-footer with a fondness for designer clothing and handguns. She is also a high school history teacher, supervising a class visit to Washington. When a student bolts off the path near the Lincoln Memorial, Toni chases him into the foliage, where she finds more than her wayward student. A man has been shot, left for dead in the bushes. He appears homeless and drunk, jabbers craziness and dies in her arms. The police say it is typical street violence. Toni knows better.

Crime scene details don’t add up and when she begins receiving threats, Toni knows someone wants her to shut up. The teacher she has become wants to skedaddle back to the safety of her Marin classroom. The cop she used to be won’t let her. Before he died, the man in her arms hid a 4 gig flash drive in her jacket. Once Toni discovers what’s on it, there’s no turning back.

New Poster for Easy Money

Easy Money (2012; Snabba Cash 2010)

A new poster for the film Easy Money has been released (right; click for larger image).

Originally released in Sweden in 2010 as Snabba Cash, the film stars Joel Kinnaman as lower class business student JW, who falls in love with a sexy heiress while living a double life mingling with Stockholm's wealthy elite. To keep up the façade of his lifestyle, he's lured into a world of crime. Jorge (Matias Padin Varela) is a petty fugitive on the run from both the police and Serbian mafia. He hopes that brokering a massive cocaine deal will allow him to escape for good. Mafia enforcer Mrado (Dragomir Mrsic) is on the hunt for Jorge, but his efforts are complicated when he's unexpectedly saddled with caring for his young daughter. As JW's journey ventures deeper into the dark world of organized crime, the fate of all three men becomes entangled and ends with a dramatic struggle for life and death.

Easy Money is adapted from the 2006 crime novel Snabba Cash — an English-language translation of which was published this year as Easy Money — by Jens Lapidus. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the film opens in limited release on July 27th, 2012. Snabba Cash II has already been released in Sweden, and is based on the second book in the crime trilogy.

New Poster for Alex Cross

Alex Cross (2012)

A new poster for the film Alex Cross has been released by the studio (right; click for larger image). We like the poster quite a bit; we hate the tagline: "Don't ever cross Alex Cross."

Not directly adapted from any of the James Patterson "Alex Cross" mysteries, it is a semi-original screenplay that incorporates plot elements from at least two of the novels that feature the character.

Here's a fairly old synopsis from the studio, back when it was titled I, Alex Cross, though it should still be applicable: Crusading detective/psychologist Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) meets his match against the psychotic, mob hit man, Michael Sullivan, aka The Butcher. As Cross investigates the hit man's gruesome murders, Sullivan decides to send him a deadly message by murdering his wife in cold blood. Now enraged, Cross vows to hunt down the killer if it's the last thing he does. However, Sullivan is a serial killing mastermind and continues to evade Cross while pushing him to an ethical breaking point as a cop and father. As Cross closes in on the killer, he discovers evidence that points to the unimaginable — a revelation that could change everything.

Directed by Rob Cohen from a screenplay by Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson, Alex Cross opens in theaters October 19th, 2012.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120623)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

As we mentioned last Saturday, this update is coming out two days late because so many titles that were part of Amazon's most recent The Big Deal sale were included here. Indeed, 37 books came off the list. We were able to find 29 new ones to add, and to bring the total back to 100 we re-added the eight M. C. Beaton "Hamish Macbeth" mysteries, which fell off the list a few weeks ago.

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

There's not much in the way of individual publisher news, so we'll get right to the new $2.99 or less titles we added today; click on the cover or title to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.
