Restricted Film Clip from Savages

Savages, adapted from the Crime Novel by Don Winslow (2012)

Just minutes ago Universal Studios released a restricted — for language — clip from the film Savages, adapted from the crime novel by Don Winslow. The scene, embedded below, is titled "Elena confronts Lado" (featuring, respectively, Salma Hayek and Benicio Del Toro) and if this is typical of the tension this film can generate, it ought to be a terrific thriller.

Savages opens in theaters July 6th, 2012.

Kindle Mysteries Priced $2.99 or less

Some of you may have noticed something new in our sidebar: "Discover Kindle Mysteries priced $2.99 or less from these publishers …".

We've observed over the past few months that publishers are more frequently promoting some of their e-book titles by temporarily discounting them, usually to $2.99 or less (but sometimes a bit more … though it's not uncommon to find some for free). The titles they select change on a regular basis so we thought it might be useful to have a general link to publishers of mystery, suspense and thriller ebooks, which are currently promoting books priced $2.99 or less — and make it readily accessible to regular readers via our sidebar. (We've specifically selected the Kindle versions of these books to highlight as they seem to be the most popular.)

The links in the graphic above (and on the sidebar) are active. We'll periodically rotate the publishers listed and try to make sure there are more than just one or two titles from which to choose for each publisher.

Jurassic Park 4 Gets New Screenwriters

Jurassic Park

Universal Pictures has taken a(nother) step towards making a fourth "Jurassic Park" film by hiring screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to pen the script. The pair most recently worked together on the original screenplay for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and will adapt the Pierre Boulle novel La Planète des Singes as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, tentatively scheduled for release in 2014.

Steven Spielberg is expected to co-produce this fourth film, though he won't be directing it.

We have somewhat ambivalent feelings about continuing the film series/franchise. The first film, Jurassic Park, adapted from the 1990 thriller by Michael Crichton, remains one of our all time favorites, but the second was a disaster — no pun intended — and the third just so-so. We definitely think there's a continuing story to be told here, so will be looking forward to seeing how the project progresses.

The journal, kept after his uncle fled from New York City to Ireland to escape prosecution for a murder he did not commit, draws Sean into a hunt for the truth about Michael's fate.

Sean too leaves New York for Ireland, where he is caught up in the lives of people who not only know all about Michael Corrigan but have a score to settle. Hard Case Crime to Publish Illustrated Crime Novel, Seduction of the Innocent by Max Allan Collins

Seduction of the Innocent by Max Allan Collins, Hard Case Crime February 2013

In our previous post we happened to mention specialty publisher Hard Case Crime in reference to a new title being published this month. Afterwards we thought we'd surf — Gosh … does anyone still use that term in the context of the Internet? We're probably dating ourselves here … — on over the publisher's website to see what's new.

In the "Our Books" section, we noticed a new book by Max Allan Collins, Seduction of the Innocent. But what really attracted our attention was the fact that it seems to be a cross between a crime novel and a graphic crime novel, an illustrated crime novel, if you will.

Here's the publisher's synopsis of the book:

"Comic books are corrupting America's youth!

"Or so the esteemed Dr. Werner Frederick would have people believe — people like the Congressmen holding hearings on banning violent crime and horror "funny books." And when the crusade provokes a most un-funny murder, Jack Starr — comics syndicate troubleshooter — has no shortage of suspects. Was it the knife-wielding juvenile delinquent or the naked seductress? Perhaps a frustrated publisher or an outraged cartoonist. Or was it a comic book reader …?

"Inspired by the real-life 1950s witch-hunt against Tales From the Crypt publisher EC Comics, Seduction of the Innocent pulls back the curtain for an insider's view of the history of comics — and features more than a dozen brand new illustrations in the classic EC style by comic book legend Terry Beatty!"

A whodunit-style mystery to look forward to. It is expected to hit bookstores in February 2013. You can read a sample chapter here.

Mysterious Press Reissues Joseph Koenig's Crime Novels as eBooks

Mysterious Press

Mysterious Press continues to introduce readers to older, and in many cases long out of print, crime novels by reissuing them in ebook format. This week's announcement covers four stand-alone books by former crime reporter Joseph Koenig, originally published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. And in something of a grand circle, one of these titles — Koenig's first, Floater — was published in hardcover by the "original" Mysterious Press in 1986.

Earlier this month, Hard Case Crime published a new crime novel by Joseph Koenig, False Negative, his first in nearly 20 years, featuring an investigative reporter working on a story some very powerful men would rather see covered up than covered.

Telemystery: TNT Passes on Scent of the Missing

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Last month TNT — which already has a strong line-up of crime dramas — announced a number of projects it was considering moving forward to the pilot stage, at least two or three of which are likely to make the cut.

Even before that, L. A. Noir based on John Buntin's 2009 book of the same title, was greenlighted and looks good to be getting a series order … though that hasn't happened yet.

But another series project has been dropped from consideration: Scent of the Missing, based on the book by Susannah Charleson, which was actually ordered to pilot last September and cast a month later.

We'll keep you posted on any further news from the cable network.

The president (played by Benjamin Walker) has learned that blood-thirsty vampires are planning to take over the United States, and makes it his mission to eliminate them, thus becoming history's greatest hunter of the undead.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, who adapted from his own 2010 novel of the same title.

Running time: 105 minutes Rated R for violence throughout and brief sexuality.
