It is the late summer of 1938, Europe is about to explode, the Hollywood film star Fredric Stahl is on his way to Paris to make a movie for Paramount France. The Nazis know he's coming — a secret bureau within the Reich Foreign Ministry has for years been waging political warfare against France, using bribery, intimidation, and corrupt newspapers to weaken French morale and degrade France's will to defend herself.

For their purposes, Fredric Stahl is a perfect agent of influence, and they attack him. What they don't know is that Stahl, horrified by the Nazi war on Jews and intellectuals, has become part of an informal spy service being run out of the American embassy in Paris.

The Third Gate by Lincoln Child

One spot lower is the first in a new series, The Third Gate by Lincoln Child.

Under the direction of famed explorer Porter Stone, an archaeological team is secretly attempting to locate the tomb of an ancient pharaoh who was unlike any other in history. Stone believes he has found the burial chamber of King Narmer, the near mythical god- king who united upper and lower Egypt in 3200 B.C., and the archaeologist has reason to believe that the greatest prize of all — Narmer's crown — might be buried with him. No crown of an Egyptian king has ever been discovered, and Narmer's is the elusive “double” crown of the two Egypts, supposedly possessed of awesome powers.

The dig itself is located in one of the most forbidding places on earth — the Sudd, a nearly impassable swamp in northern Sudan. Amid the nightmarish, disorienting tangle of mud and dead vegetation, a series of harrowing and inexplicable occurrences are causing people on the expedition to fear a centuries-old curse. With a monumental discovery in reach, Professor Jeremy Logan is brought onto the project to investigate. What he finds will raise new questions … and alarm.

XO by Jeffery Deaver

The third newcomer to the list at number 12 is XO, the third Kathryn Dance mystery by Jeffery Deaver.

Country-pop ingénue Kayleigh Towne's career is just reaching new heights with her huge hit single "Your Shadow" — but increased fame is also bringing unwanted attention. An innocent exchange with one of her fans, signed with an "XO", leads Kayleigh into the dangerous and terrifying realm of obsession.
Edwin Sharp thinks Kayleigh's songs contain messages that speak directly to him. Despite her clear rejection and threats from lawyers and law enforcers, he remains convinced that "Your Shadow" was written just for him, and he announces he's coming for Kayleigh. Then a potentially fatal accident occurs at the concert hall where Kayleigh is rehearsing for a triumphant hometown performance, and she is convinced that someone — maybe Edwin — was there watching her from the darkness.

True to his word, Edwin Sharp soon makes an ominous appearance in town, and California Bureau of Investigation Agent Kathryn Dance, a friend and fan of Kayleigh's on vacation in Fresno to attend the show, intervenes on her behalf, drawing Sharp's frightening attention to herself. That night a member of the road crew whom Kayleigh had once dated is murdered in an eerie echo of an image from her chart-topping song. As more deaths loom on the horizon, Kathryn Dance must use her considerable skills at investigation and body-language analysis to stop the stalker and save more innocent victims. But before long she learns that, like many celebrities, Kayleigh has more than one fan with a mission …

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton Optioned for Film

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton

Steve Hamilton's 2011 Edgar Award-winning Best Novel The Lock Artist has been optioned for film by Shane Salerno, who co-wrote the screenplay adaptation of Don Winslow's Savages. Salerno is expected to co-write the adapted screenplay with Hamilton.

Marked by tragedy, traumatized at the age of eight, Michael, now eighteen, is no ordinary young man. Besides not uttering a single word in ten years, he discovers the one thing he can somehow do better than anyone else. Whether it's a locked door without a key, a padlock with no combination, or even an eight-hundred pound safe ... he can open them all.

It's an unforgivable talent. A talent that will make young Michael a hot commodity with the wrong people and, whether he likes it or not, push him ever close to a life of crime. Until he finally sees his chance to escape, and with one desperate gamble risks everything to come back home to the only person he ever loved, and to unlock the secret that has kept him silent for so long.

The Lock Artist — the Kindle edition is, as of the date and time of this post, priced at just $2.99 by its publisher, Minotaur Books — is Hamilton's second stand-alone novel; he is also the author of the Alex McKnight mystery series, the first entry of which also recognized with an Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Copper Producers Discuss Making the BBC America Crime Drama

Copper (BBC America, August 2012)

Executive producers Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana talk about the making of the new BBC America original series Copper in a new video uploaded by the network (and embedded below). The historical crime drama is set in 1860s Manhattan.

"I think the idea of doing a period piece is really exciting because you're now looking at New York City 140 some-odd years ago," says Levinson. "It was a messy, confusing time."

Tom Weston-Jones stars as Kevin Corcoran, an intense, rugged Irish-immigrant cop working the city's notorious Five Points neighborhood. Corcoran is struggling to maintain his moral compass in a turbulent post-Civil War world while on an emotional and relentless quest to learn the truth about the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter.

Copper premieres on BBC America on August 19th, 2012.

Burn Notice Season 6 Premieres Thursday, June 14th

Burn Note: First Contact, Volume 3, Issue 1

The sixth season of Burn Notice premieres tonight, June 14th, on USA Network.

In an episode titled "Scorched Earth", Michael hunts Anson through the streets of Miami in the wake of the Season 5 finale. Refusing to let Anson get away, Michael races against the clock to find him … but time may not be his only obstacle. Meanwhile, Fiona is taken into federal custody after her surrender, where she's interrogated by an old nemesis.

Also debuting is the third volume of the "Burn Notice" graphic novel series. Titled First Contact, the first chapter picks up after the events of tonight's premiere: Michael is trying to cope with Fiona's imprisonment and has barely left the house. Sam and Jesse finally convince him to leave his loft for a meet-up, but an enemy from his past has different plans.

You can download (or read online) the chapter — a new one will be available every week — from the First Contact website.

Enter to Win a Copy of The Cold Dish, the First Longmire Mystery by Craig Johnson

The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson. A Walt Longmire Mystery (1st in series).

A&E has recently begun airing episodes of Longmire, a western crime drama based on a character created by mystery author Craig Johnson.

In recognition of the new television series, Penguin Books has reissued the first book to feature Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, The Cold Dish, as a trade paperback and we're delighted to be able to give away, courtesy of the publisher, a copy to one of our readers. See entry details at the bottom of this post.

The citizens of the Cowboy State boast a long and bloody history of dispensing rough justice but the last few decades have bred peace between the white and Native American communities. So when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Sheriff Walt Longmire and the general population of Absaroka County are inclined to think it's a hunting accident. But two years earlier Cody was one four high school boys convicted of brutally raping Melissa Little Bird, a young Cheyenne girl with fetal alcohol syndrome. The boys were guilty but let off with suspended sentences. Was this a revenge killing? Sheriff Longmire intends to find out.

After twenty-four years as sheriff, Walt, along with Deputy Victoria Moretti and lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, is embroiled in the most volatile and challenging case of his career. He might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 buffalo rifle.

Though we haven't read this title, we have read and reviewed the three most recent mysteries in the series — Junkyard Dogs, one of our picks as the best mysteries of 2010; Hell Is Empty; and As the Crow Flies; as well as the short story "Divorce Horse" — and it is one that we enthusiastically recommend.

Longmire currently airs Sundays at 10 PM (ET/PT) on A&E. You can watch a trailer for the series below.

For a chance to win a trade paperback edition of The Cold Dish, visit Mystery Book Contests and click on the Craig Johnson: Longmire contest link, enter your name, e-mail address, and this code: 3148. (One entry per person. US residents only. Contest ends June 22nd, 2012.)

New Poster, Trailer for Sinister

Sinister (2012)

A first poster (right; click for larger image) and trailer (below) have been released for the horror thriller Sinister. The film's tagline: "Once you see him, nothing can save you."

Ethan Hawke stars as a true crime novelist, who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that help him understand how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his own family in the path of a supernatural entity.

Directed by Scott Derrickson from an original screenplay co-written with C. Robert Cargill, Sinister opens in theaters October 5th, 2012.

The Stunt Man, Free to Watch on Hulu

The Stunt Man (1980)

We were looking through the free feature films on Hulu last night and came across several that we thought we'd highlight here over the next few weeks.

First up: The Stunt Man.

We can't remember when we first saw the film — probably not until it came out on VHS since it didn't receive a wide theatrical release — but it immediately hit our Top 10 list and has remained there since. Peter O'Toole's performance is nothing short of brilliant, but it's the twisty screenplay that captured our imagination. (It was adapted from the 1970 novel of the same title by Paul Brodeur.) O'Toole, screenwriters Lawrence B. Marcus and Richard Rush, who also directed, were all nominated for Academy Awards (Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director).

Here's a summary of the film:

Running from the law, Vietnam vet Cameron (Steve Railsback) stumbles on a movie shoot just in time to interfere with a staged accident, causing the stunt man's death. Rather than turn Cameron in, director Eli Cross (Peter O'Toole) makes him an offer he can't refuse: replace the dead stunt man in return for safe harbor. Despite objections about Cameron's inexperience, Eli keeps him on, figuring that a vet will add an extra charge of realism to the World War I opus that he's filming. As leading lady Nina (Barbara Hershey) returns Cameron's affections, and Eli becomes ever more inscrutably mercurial, Cameron begins to wonder how far Eli will go to get the screen effects he wants, and if he would think twice about killing the stunt man.

The Stunt Man is rated R for pervasive strong language, intense action and violence (within the context of a film production), and nudity. We've embedded it below, but free films on Hulu aren't generally available for very long. (The film is also available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.)

CBC Commissions Adaptation of Louise Penny's Still Life

Still Life by Louise Penny. A Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery.

CBC has commissioned a made-for-television adaptation of Louise Penny's debut mystery, Still Life. The book, which introduces Armand Gamache, a Chief Inspector with the Sûreté du Québec, was the winner of multiple literary awards, including the 2006 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel, the 2006 CWA New Blood Dagger Award, the 2007 Anthony Award for Best First Novel, and several others.

In the book, Gamache and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.
