A Feast of Ice & Fire: The Official Cookbook of Game of Thrones

A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook

Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones will not want to miss this new companion book, published Tuesday, May 29th, by Bantam: A Feast of Ice & Fire, the official cookbook of the series.

Ever wonder what it's like to attend a feast at Winterfell? Wish you could split a lemon cake with Sansa Stark, scarf down a pork pie with the Night's Watch, or indulge in honeyfingers with Daenerys Targaryen? George R. R. Martin's bestselling saga "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the its adaptation on HBO are renowned for bringing Westeros's sights and sounds to vivid life. But one important ingredient has always been missing: the mouthwatering dishes that form the backdrop of this extraordinary world. Now, fresh out of the series that redefined fantasy, comes the cookbook that may just redefine dinner … and lunch, and breakfast.

A Feast of Ice & Fire lovingly replicates a stunning range of cuisines from across the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. From the sumptuous delicacies enjoyed in the halls of power at King's Landing, to the warm and smoky comfort foods of the frozen North, to the rich, exotic fare of the mysterious lands east of Westeros, there's a flavor for every palate, and a treat for every chef.

These easy-to-follow recipes have been refined for modern cooking techniques, but adventurous eaters can also attempt the authentic medieval meals that inspired them. The authors have suggested substitutions for some of the more fantastical ingredients, so you won't have to stock your kitchen with camel, live doves, or dragon eggs to create meals fit for a king (or a khaleesi).

Consider these kingdom favorites:

• The Wall: Rack of Lamb and Herbs; Pork Pie; Mutton in Onion-Ale Broth; Mulled Wine; Pease Porridge.

• The North: Beef and Bacon Pie; Honeyed Chicken; Aurochs with Roasted Leeks; Baked Apples.

• The South: Cream Swans; Trout Wrapped in Bacon; Stewed Rabbit; Sister’s Stew; Blueberry Tarts.

• King’s Landing: Lemon Cakes; Quails Drowned in Butter; Almond Crusted Trout; Bowls of Brown; Iced Milk with Honey.

• Dorne: Stuffed Grape Leaves; Duck with Lemons; Chickpea Paste.

• Across the Narrow Sea: Biscuits and Bacon; Tyroshi Honeyfingers; Wintercakes; Honey-Spiced Locusts.

There's even a guide to dining and entertaining in the style of the Seven Kingdoms. Exhaustively researched and reverently detailed, accompanied by passages from all five books in the series and full-color photographs guaranteed to whet your appetite, this is the companion to the blockbuster phenomenon that millions of stomachs have been growling for. And remember, winter is coming — so don't be afraid to put on a few pounds.

Henning Mankell's Wallander Series Two, New on DVD

Henning Mankell's Wallander (2009)

The second series of the Swedish-language crime drama Wallander is released on DVD tomorrow, Tuesday May 29th, 2012. The 13 feature film length episodes were originally broadcast on Sweden's TV4 through 2009 and the first six months of 2010. (It aired in the UK during the summer of 2011 though to our knowledge none of these episodes have previously aired in the US.)

Krister Henriksson reprises his role as Inspector Kurt Wallander, based on a character created by crime novelist Henning Mankell.

As series opens, Wallander is growing increasingly disillusioned with his work, often wondering whether he should have become a police officer at all. Still living with the fallout and memories of some of his past actions, coupled with a failing state of health, Wallander hopes to put himself at ease in a new home by the sea. But any thought of peace and quiet is quickly shattered when he is pulled into a murder investigation...and then another … until he comes to understand that applying his brilliant detective's mind in the pursuit of truth and justice is indeed his destiny.

Wallander is in Swedish with English subtitles. Watch a promo for the series below.

This television series of original stories should not be confused with the nine Swedish-language theatrical film adaptations of the novels by Mankell — Rolf Lassgård played the character in these — nor the English-language versions produced by BBC starring Kenneth Branagh as Wallander.

Lifetime Developing Series based on Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

NBC is developing a crime drama based on characters in Thomas Harris's 1981 novel Red Dragon, and now we're learning that Lifetime Television is taking a similar route, developing a series around FBI profiler Clarice Starling, introduced in the author's second "Hannibal Lecter" thriller, the 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs, and played so memorably by Jodie Foster in the film adaptation. (She won an Academy Award for her performance.)

Clarice — the tentative name for the Lifetime series — would follow the character soon after she graduates from the FBI academy.

No casting or further production details are known at this time.

Ever since fabulously wealthy Malcolm Doran walked into her life and swept her off her feet, fledgling architect Jane Boyle has been living a fairy tale. When he proposes with a stunning diamond to seal the deal, Jane can't believe her incredible luck and decides to leave her Paris-based job to make a new start with Malcolm in New York.

But when Malcolm introduces Jane to the esteemed Doran clan, one of Manhattan's most feared and revered families, Jane's fairy tale takes a darker turn. Soon everything she thought she knew about the world — and herself — is upended. Now Jane must struggle with newfound magical abilities and the threat of those who will stop at nothing to get them.

Now … with respect to the new television series, the storyline provided by ABC seems quite a bit different from that of the book. Here's what the network had to say when the series was announced:

At the ominous address of 666 Park Avenue, anything you desire can be yours. Everyone has needs, desires and ambition. For the residents of The Drake, these will all be met, courtesy of the building's mysterious owner, Gavin Doran (Terry O'Quinn). But every Faustian contract comes with a price. When Jane Van Veen (Rachael Taylor) and Henry Martin (Dave Annable), an idealistic young couple from the Midwest, are offered the opportunity to manage the historic building, they not only fall prey to the machinations of Doran and his mysterious wife, Olivia (Vanessa Williams), but unwittingly begin to experience the shadowy, supernatural forces within the building that imprison and endanger the lives of the residents inside. Sexy, seductive and inviting, The Drake maintains a dark hold over all of its residents, tempting them through their ambitions and desires, in this chilling new drama that's home to an epic struggle of good versus evil.

Second Trailer for True Blood Season 5

True Blood (HBO, Season 5)

The fifth season of True Blood premieres in just a couple of weeks, and today HBO released the second trailer for the season; we've embedded it below.

We don't think there has been an official synopsis released, but the storyline this season is expected to loosely follow the fifth book in the series by Charlaine Harris, Dead as a Doornail. (A new paperback tie-in edition of the book was published earlier this week.)

Make plans to catch the fifth season premiere of True Blood on June 10th … or at the very least, remember to set your DVR! (We'll make a note to remind you a day or so ahead of time.)

Sherlock Wins 2012 BAFTA Supporting Actor Award

BAFTA Logo

The 2012 BAFTA Television Awards were handed out this evening and we are absolutely thrilled that Andrew Scott won the Supporting Actor award for his electrifying performance as James Moriarty in Sherlock. (We had hoped to have our review of the second season up by now, but suffice it to say that the third episode, "The Reichenbach Fall", is made all the more exceptional by Scott's brilliant portrayal of Sherlock's arch-nemesis.)

It is a tad disappointing that this was the only award won by the series. Benedict Cumberbatch — who plays Sherlock Holmes in the series — lost to Dominic West (Appropriate Adult) and Martin Freeman — John Watson — lost to Andrew Scott. The series itself was not even nominated in the Drama category, something we're still having a hard time coming to terms with … and we're here in the US!
