TNT Announces Prime Time Crime Series in Development

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

This has been a "travel week" for us so we're way behind on all our prime time crime news. We hope to get caught up tomorrow.

In the meantime, TNT announced in a press release today several new series in development that piqued our interest.

King and Maxwell is based on characters created by crime novelist David Baldacci. "Both are former secret service agents, and their unique skill set (not to mention their razor-sharp chemistry) often gives them a leg up on both suspects and conventional law enforcement."

The Last Ship, based on a novel of the same title by William Brinkley, has "the crew of a naval destroyer forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic decimates most of the earth's population." (We're really not fans of apocalyptic storylines, so this is probably the least interesting of the cable network's announcements today.)

Legends, based on the novel by Robert Littell, "follows a deep-cover operative named Martin Odum, who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. But his own identity comes into question when a mysterious stranger suggests that Martin isn’t who he thinks he is."

Lew Archer, based on — not surprisingly — a character created by Ross Macdonald … though the press release gets the pseudonymous author's name wrong.

Tom Clancy's Homeland Security, which is set in the author's fictional world but doesn't seem to be based on any specific novel or character.

And an untitled "Murder Mystery Project", an "intriguing crime drama [that] will intimately dissect a single murder case over an entire season, from the commitment of the crime through the investigation, arrest and trial."

NBC Orders Series based on The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard

The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard

Luther creator Neil Cross is adapting Colin Woodard's 2008 book The Republic of Pirates for a direct-to-series order for NBC. The 10-episode series is expected to premiere mid-season. The book's subtitle: "Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribeean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down".

In the early eighteenth century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates — former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves — this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote. They cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe from its New World empires, and for a brief, glorious period the Republic was a success.

First Trailer for Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad (2012)

A new trailer for the film Gangster Squad has been released by the studio (below).

The film is adapted from the yet-to-be-published book by Paul Lieberman of the same title (Gangster Squad, St. Martin's Press October 2012 hardcover). Lieberman's book tells the story of two cops, O'Mara and Wooters, both of whom became obsessed with the Squad's priority target, the showboating Mickey Cohen. One set a trap for Mickey using his own guns, while the other formed an alliance with Mickey's fearless rival, Jack "The Enforcer" Whalen. Both of their crusades then came to a head on the same night in the last days of the 1950s.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film stars Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as cops John O'Mara and Ryan Gosling, with Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen. A release date has not yet been announced.

Teaser Poster for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2013)

A teaser poster for the Sin City sequel A Dame to Kill For has been released (right; click for larger version). The film itself hasn't even begun production, but that is expected later this year with a release date sometime in 2013.

Adapted from the comic of the same title by Frank Miller (as part of his "Sin City" series), the storyline follows Dwight McCarthy, a man stuck with nothing but a seedy gumshoe job and some demons. Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb gray hell that is his life. And he'd give anything. Just to feel the fire. One more time. But he can't let himself lose control again, can't ever let the monster out. And then Ava calls.

Rampart (2012)

Film Synopsis (from the studio): Nothing fascinates like a dirty cop. In real life they're terrifying, but in the movies their upending of law and order can open deep explorations of psychology, morality and violence. So meet Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson). Brown is a cop long ago unleashed from the rules of the Los Angeles Police Department. Roving the streets in his black-and-white cruiser, he governs and punishes at will. His home life is a riddle. Somehow he has fathered children with two sisters. Somehow he still lives casually with them both, slipping in and out of a family life thats as tangled as his long career on the force. His own daughter calls him Date Rape. Thats because, years ago, Brown may have killed a rapist and gotten away with it. The shadow of the incident still haunts him, so when his Rampart division gets caught up in a corruption scandal, Brown makes an easy target. As the controversy seeps through the department and into city hall, this hardened, reckless officer finds himself at the center of a sordid L.A. story.

Written and directed by Oren Moverman from a story by James Ellroy, Rampart runs 108 minutes and is rated R for pervasive language, sexual content and some violence.
