Lawyers, Guns and Money by J. D. Rhoades
Publisher: J. D. Rhoades

This stand-alone thriller is by the author of the Jack Keller mysteries.

About Lawyers, Guns and Money (from the publisher): Andy Cole has a problem. Local crime boss Voit Fairgreen has just dropped a bag full of cash on his desk and hired him to defend Voit's brother Danny on a murder charge. Andy's one of the movers and shakers in the small southern town of Blainesville, and Voit figures Andy's the kind of inside guy that can cut a deal to get his baby brother out of the jam.

The problem is that Danny just might be innocent. But someone powerful needs this case buried, and if an innocent man dies for that, so be it.

Andy Cole is a guy who's made a good living by going along to get along. He's been willing to bend every rule, except Rule One — always get paid. But this case will cause him to re-examine his life and push him and his lover, beautiful newspaper editor Elizabeth Sinclair, to risk everything — including their lives — for the truth.

First Trailer for True Blood Season 5

True Blood (HBO)

HBO has released a new trailer for the fifth season of True Blood; we've embedded it below.

Based on the series of Sookie Stackhouse "Southern Vampire" mysteries by Charlaine Harris, this season is expected to generally follow the storyline of the fifth book in the series, Dead as a Doornail — the cover of which, not coincidentally, is the same as this season's teaser poster. (A tie-in edition of the book is being published next week.)

True Blood returns on Sunday, June 10th, 2012.

Telemystery: CBS Orders 3 and Cancels 3 Prime Time Crime Series

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

The last of the networks, CBS, announced today what series they were ordering, renewing, and canceling for the 2012 Fall season.

Among the new series are Elementary (Sherlock Holmes in contemporary New York City), Vegas (based on the story of Ralph Lamb, who became the sheriff of Clark County Nevada in the 1960s), and Golden Boy (one cop's rise from officer to police commissioner). We're disappointed to see that Applebaum, based on the "Mommy Track" mysteries by Ayelet Waldman, didn't make the cut.

Renewals include CSI: NY, which apparently was doubtful … and was considered a toss-up with its franchise mate from Florida as to which to keep. Speaking of which …

The long-running CSI: Miami has been canceled as well as newcomers NYC 22 and Unforgettable.

Special Offer: Kindle Edition of Gutshot Straight by Lou Berney with Bonus Excerpt, Free to Pre-Order

Gutshot Straight by Lou Berney

As of the date and time of this post, HarperCollins is offering a special edition of Lou Berney's debut crime caper Gutshot Straight as a free Kindle download. (As always, prices can and do change without notice, so please confirm the price of the book before 1-click ordering.)

This particular edition won't be delivered to your Kindle until June 12th … and it will include an excerpt from the next Heather Wells mystery by Meg Cabot, Size 12 and Ready to Rock, which is scheduled to be published July 10th. (A description of Meg Cabot's book is given instead of that for Gutshot Straight on the latter book's pre-order page, which we believe to be a simple error on the part of either the publisher or Amazon.)

Gutshot Straight, originally published in hardcover in 2010, features Charles "Shake" Bouchon, a professional wheel man, who walks out of prison after a three-year stretch for grand theft auto. Now he's got only two problems: he's too nice a guy for the life he's led and not nice enough for any other.

So he says yes when he's asked to run a simple errand for his former boss and lover, Alexandra Ilandryan, the formidable pakhan of the Armenian mob in Los Angeles. All Shake has to do is deliver a package to Las Vegas and pick up a briefcase.

Only the package turns out to be a wholesome young housewife named Gina whose husband has run afoul of Dick Moby, aka "The Whale," an unpleasant four-hundred-pound Vegas strip-club owner. Shake hates to think what's going to happen to Gina when he delivers her to The Whale, so in a move that's as noble as it is boneheaded, he decides to set her free.

Now Shake and Gina are on the run to Panama, hoping to unload the very valuable — and highly unusual — contents of The Whale's briefcase. Shake could end up a rich man, but first he'll have to outmaneuver two angry crime bosses, a murderous Armenian thug plagued by erectile superfunction, a former pro football player who blames Shake for his romantic woes, and a billionaire swindler with a flair for the theatrical. Not to mention, and not the least, Shake will need to survive his own heart, since he's going to discover that wholesome housewife Gina is even more intriguing, and a lot more complicated, than he ever imagined.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120512)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

Shown below are some of the new titles we added today.

A quick additional note: Yesterday we featured the 10 new discounted titles from Poisoned Pen Press, so we aren't repeating them here. But they are included in our updated list.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.
