Casting Update for RED 2

RED (2010)

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byun-Hun Lee have joined the original cast of the 2010 action thriller RED — Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, and Helen Mirren — in its sequel, somewhat unimaginatively titled RED 2.

Based on the graphic novel RED by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, the premise involves a group of retired — the "R" in RED — and extremely dangerous — the "ED" in RED — CIA operatives, who do fun and amazing things with high tech weaponry. OK, that's not the original storyline but that's what the film was, and presumably its sequel will be, about. (Read our review of RED.)

Dean Parisot will direct RED 2 from a screenplay by brother Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout, Battleship, and the original RED). It is currently scheduled to open in theaters August 2nd, 2013.

ITV Commissions Murder Mystery A Mother's Son

ITV1

Hermione Norris, Martin Clunes, Paul McGann and Alexander Arnold are set to star in the original murder mystery drama A Mother's Son for ITV1.

Written by Chris Lang, the storyline follows Rosie, a recently remarried woman (Norris), who suspects her son Jamie (Arnold) may be responsible for the death of a teenaged schoolgirl. Clunes play's Rosie's current husband Ben, with McGann playing her ex-husband and Jamie's father David.

"A Mother's Son is the story of an ordinary mother tormented by her suspicions and thoughts that her son may be capable of murder," said Victoria Fea, Commissioning Executive at ITV. "She's confronted with this terrifying dilemma and has to ask herself, should she go to the police and give him up? She'll wrestle with this throughout what is a very compelling drama."

Filming on the two-part drama is expected to begin later this month on location in London and Suffolk.

Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce Mysteries Optioned for Television Movies

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

Sam Mendes's Neal Street Productions has acquired the film and television rights to the "Flavia de Luce" mysteries by Alan Bradley. The first book in the series, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, introduced the 11-year-old amateur sleuth and won numerous literary awards including the Arthur Ellis Award, the Agatha Award, and the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery Novel.

The books are expected to be developed into a series of made-for-television films.

What surprised us a bit in the news item (via Quill & Quire) was the mention that this is — or at least, is planned to be — a 10-book series. Sure enough, in news we missed from earlier this year, Bradley extended his previous six-book deal to ten. Four have been published to date and the author lists on his website two additional titles: Speaking from Among the Bones (2013) and The Dead in their Vaulted Arches (2014).

Telemystery: ABC Renews Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Castle; NBC Orders Infamous; DirecTV Orders Rogue

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

We've been gone most of today, just returning, so haven't had much time to digest all the latest prime time crime television news … though we believe this to be a complete, if brief, summary of what was announced today …

ABC: Renews Once Upon a Time for a 2nd season, renews Revenge for a 2nd season, and renews Castle for a 5th season. (None of these are surprises as they are all strong ratings draws for the network.)

NBC: Orders new series Infamous. (This was previously known as Notorious.)

DirecTV: Orders new series Rogue. (This is the first we've heard about this, so will need to do a little more digging to see what the logline is here.)

Screenwriters Named for Film Adaptation of The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen

Mystery, Suspense and Thriller Film News

The Festival de Cannes begins next week and we're already starting to get mystery movie news in advance of the event.

Earlier this year we reported that adaptations of Jussi Adler-Olsen's "Department Q" mysteries were planned. Now we're learning a few more details about the project.

Nikolaj Arcel — who adapted The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for the Swedish-language version of the film — and Mikkel Nørgaard will write the screenplay for the first in the series, The Keeper of Lost Causes (original Danish title: Kvinden i buret). Filming is expected to begin in October.

"You do not get a film project bigger than this," said Rikke Ennis, CEO of TrustNordisk, which will be pre-selling the project during Cannes. "It is a perfect match between a bestselling author, a high profile production company and the best Nordic talents."

Homicide detective and cold case investigator Carl Mørck is the head of "Department Q", who in his first case looks into the disappearance of a woman five years ago. (Read our review of The Keeper of Lost Causes.)
