Vengeance is Blind by BV Lawson
Publisher: Crimetime Press

About Vengeance is Blind (from the publisher): This collection of three short stories feature Scott Drayco, a man who had everything going for him: handsome, brilliant, a talented classical pianist in the prime of his youth. After violence scarred him physically and emotionally, he turned to an FBI career for ten years and now freelances as a crime consultant, taking on cases other people often don't want to touch.

In "Valley of the Shadow of the Death", betrayal leads to attempted murder-by-flash-flood in America's desert southwest; in "Blood Antiphon", a suspected serial killer plays mind games with Drayco, who learns the two men are connected in a most disturbing way; and in "The Devil to Play", Drayco tries to prevent the theft of a rare violin that appears to be cursed.

Dangerous Games by Michael Prescott

Dangerous Games by Michael Prescott
Publisher: Onyx

This title is the first in a trilogy centered on two female characters, Tess McCallum and Abby Sinclair, who had appeared separately in two of the author's earlier books.

About Dangerous Games (from the publisher): Maverick FBI special agent Tess McCallum (nicknamed "Super Fed" by an adoring media) — the central investigator in previous novel, Next Victim — is back and she’s got a new partner, one she doesn’t want and doesn’t trust. She’s chasing a vicious kidnapper known as the "Rain Man," who leaves his victims chained up in vast storm drain system underneath Los Angeles and doomed to drown unless their ransom is paid on time, and only by the City of Los Angeles, to his off-shore bank account.

A freelance security agent named Abby Sinclair, who specializes in putting stalkers behind bars, often by extra-legal means, has already had her hooks in the case for a while and is working for a woman who may have been targeted — and who doesn’t trust the authorities to protect her.

Since a rain storm has already started, the time limit on saving a woman’s life is very short — and there are already two dead victims to demonstrate the high cost of making mistakes or even just being too slow to act. Only by, very reluctantly, working together can the two investigators piece together the clues to help them figure out who — and maybe even how many people — the killer really is.

HBO Renews Game of Thrones for a Third Season

Game of Thrones (HBO)

HBO has renewed Game of Thrones for a third season.

"Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season — and then surpassed them," said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. "We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we've received for the series, and can't wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.

Based on the "Song of Ice and Fire" epic fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, this third season is expected to follow — at least in part — the first half of the third book in the series, A Storm of Swords. (The hardcover edition runs nearly 1000 pages in length; it was split into two parts for one of its paperback releases.)

The second season of Game of Thrones is currently airing on HBO on Sundays at 9 PM (ET/PT). To celebrate, let's once again revisit the stellar opening credits from the first season, below; we think the theme is about the best we've ever heard for a television series. (HBO hasn't uploaded the second season opening credits … yet.)

Now You See Me by S. J. Bolton

About Now You See Me (from the publisher): Late one night after interviewing a witness, Lacey Flint, a young detective constable, stumbles onto a woman brutally stabbed just moments before. Within twenty-four hours, a reporter receives an anonymous letter pointing out alarming similarities between the murder and Jack the Ripper’s first murder—a letter that calls out Lacey by name. If it’s real, and they have a killer bent on re-creating London’s bloody past, history shows they have just five days until the next attempt.

No one believes the connections are anything more than a sadistic killer’s game, not even Lacey, whom the killer seems to be taunting specifically. But as the case unfolds, the details start reminding Lacey of a part of her own past she’d rather keep hidden. And the only way to do that is to catch the killer herself.

The Dunn Deal by Catherine Leggitt
A Christine Sterling Mystery
Publisher: Ellechor Publishing

About The Dunn Deal (from the publisher): Rumors of dirty cops, midnight meetings on Friday the thirteenth, and a forested militia masquerading as a religious cult—these and other peculiar elements complicate the senseless murder of Deputy Sheriff Baxter Dunn, son-in-law of Christine Sterling's best friend and mentor Zora Jane Callahan.

The subject may be frightful, but amateur sleuth Christine Sterling tackles it with her characteristic blend of snoopiness and tenacity, especially after Molly, her beloved border collie, is dog napped in retaliation for Christine's intrusion into matters that are none of her business.

National media attention fuels the escalating conflict between Christine and the authorities. Constance Boyd, a renowned newswoman, arrives to launch her own inquiry into the murder. When she crosses paths with Zora Jane, a strong Christian with a heart for spreading the Gospel, she is confronted with Truth. Zora Jane challenges postmodern humanistic beliefs using scripture. But Miss Boyd clings to her perverted "religion."

Suspicions develop concerning which of the lawmen can be trusted, if any. Truth is challenged on every side. When a second murder jolts the tranquil community, Christine gets tagged as the prime suspect. Who will rescue Molly if Christine ends up behind bars?

Last Exit in New Jersey by C. E. Grundler
A Hazel Moran Mystery
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

Gritty, offbeat, and darkly funny, this modern mystery introduces an unforgettable new protagonist to the ranks of literature's hard-boiled detectives.

About Last Exit in New Jersey (from the publisher): Nice young ladies really shouldn't be dumping bodies at sea. Then again, that isn't stopping Hazel Moran, and she can't figure where anyone got the idea she was nice to begin with.

Raised aboard her father's aging schooner and riding shotgun in their eighteen-wheeler, she can handle almost anything on the road or water; it's her people skills that need work. Normally that isn't an issue—most people tend to leave her alone behind the wheel of a Kenworth. But when twenty-year-old Hazel and her father become the targets of some unsavory characters hunting for her missing cousin, their stolen tractor trailer, and a delivery that never arrived, she knows it's time to heed a lesson learned from her favorite hard-boiled paperbacks: playing nice will only end in tears.

It'll take all her ingenuity, not to mention some fishing tackle and high voltage, if Hazel hopes to protect her family and unravel this tangle of greed and betrayal. And anyone who gets too close, no matter the intent, will discover just how dangerous Hazel truly is as she sets in motion a twisted plan to uncover the truth, settle some scores, and not wind up dead in the process.

Watch, more importantly Listen, to a New Trailer for Zoë Sharp's Crime Novel Fifth Victim

Fifth Victim by Zoë Sharp

Singer/songwriter Beth Rudetsky dropped us a line today, asking us to take a look at a book trailer for Zoë Sharp's new Charlie Fox mystery Fifth Victim … and we're so glad she did. Rudetsky wrote and performed the song that is used as as the soundtrack for the trailer, and what a hauntingly beautiful song it is. (We've embedded the book trailer below.)

So many book trailers use stock images and stock audio and are ho-hum at best — we rarely feature them on our site as a result — but this one includes live action video and the mesmerizing song by Rudetsky, which we're assuming was written specifically for this trailer.

This is what a book trailer should be, enticing a potential reader to reach out for the book. Enjoy …

New TV Spot for Action Thriller Safe

Safe (2012)

Lionsgate has just released a new 30-second TV spot for the action thriller Safe, starring the man with the gun, Jason Statham.

Statham stars as Luke Wright, a second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, who lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change … until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed.

But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei (Catherine Chan), being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action … and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a "counter." He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for.

Realizing he's the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city's brutal underworld to save an innocent girl's life … and perhaps even redeem his own.

Written and directed by Boaz Yaking, Safe is scheduled to be in theaters April 27th, 2012.

Teaser Trailer for the Trailer for Looper

Looper (2012)

We're wondering if producing a trailer for a trailer is becoming a new trend …

The latest example is for the sci-fi thriller Looper. In the video below, screenwriter/director Rian Johnson appears with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who stars in the film, and show us a few quick clips from the movie … but basically the message is, come back in 3 days to see the trailer.

Gordon-Levitt plays a hired gun named Joe, who finds himself the target of his future self (played by Bruce Willis), who travels back from the future to kill him. (We're always confused by time travel movies but, hey, it's got Bruce Willis and that's all we need to know.)

Looper opens in theaters September 28th, 2012.
