Second Game of Thrones Fan Poster for Season Two

Games of Thrones (HBO, 2012)

As part of a program set up by HBO, the cable network has been releasing fan posters created for its series. The first "Game of Thrones" fan poster depicted a sigil for House Stark. We had expected to other house posters to follow, but instead, the second fan poster is far more dramatic … and gives away a major plot point from the first season (if you haven't already seen it). We've drawn a black border around it for the purposes of this post, but the original (click for larger image) does not include it.

Game of Thrones, adapted from the series of "A Song of Ice and Fire" epic fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, returns to HBO on April 1st, 2012.

Seeking Justice Opens in Limited Release March 16th

Seeking Justice (2012)

Nicolas Cage stars as Will Gerard, a happily married family man whose quiet life is turned upside-down when his wife, Laura, is brutally attacked one night while leaving work in the crime thriller Seeking Justice, which opens in limited release this Friday, March 16th, 2012. "Vengeance always has a price."

At the hospital, waiting for news about his wife's condition, Will is approached by Simon (Guy Pearce), who proposes an intriguing offer: Simon will arrange to have a complete stranger exact vengeance on Laura's attacker, in exchange for a favor from Will in the near future. Distraught and grief-stricken, Will consents to the deal, unwittingly pulling himself into a dangerous underground vigilante operation. While continuing to protect his wife from the truth, he quickly discovers that his quest for justice could lead to frightening and deadly consequences.

Directed by Roger Donaldson from a screenplay co-written by Robert Tannen and Todd Hickey, Seeking Justice is rated R for violence, language and brief sexuality. Watch a trailer for the film below.

21 Jump Street Opens in Theaters March 16th

21 Jump Street (2012)

"They thought the streets were mean. Then they went back to high school." That's the premise of 21 Jump Street, a crime comedy that opens in theaters this Friday, March 16th, 2012. (A more recent tagline for the film: "The're too old for this shift."

Loosely based on the late 1980s television show of the same title, the film stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as young cops, who are recruited to be part of a resurrected undercover program. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Jenko and Schmidt risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring in a local high school. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Michael Bacall, 21 Jump Street is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material, teen drinking and some violence. Watch one of several trailers released for the film below.

A Merry Abbott, Carriage Driving Mystery

Honk Honk, My Darling by James Finn Garner

Honk Honk, My Darling by James Finn Garner
A Rex Koko, Private Clown Mystery
Publisher: CreateSpace

This first (in a series?) of "clown noir" introduces Rex Koko and was the winner of the 2011 Chicago Writers Association's Book of the Year Award in the non-traditional fiction category.

About Honk Honk, My Darling (from the publisher): It's 1944, in a dirty, crowded American city. As different groups struggle to scratch out a living, territorial boundaries remain clearly marked. The Chinese stay in Chinatown. Negroes crowd into Black Bottom. And the circus folks — faded stars, hangers-on and those kinkers temporarily down on their luck — keep their distance from "respectable society" in a sawdusty ghetto called Top Town.

There, under garish neon and tattered canvas, audiences come every night for cheap thrills, both wholesome and not. Fire eaters perform for gin money. Gypsies reveal the future (and for a sawbuck can make it happen). Daredevils cheat Death time after time, but once. And witness to it all is one of the most loved and notorious figures in Top Town, a tough joey with a deadly past and a nose for picking all the wrong fights: Rex Koko, private clown.

Mortal Sin by Paul Levine

Mortal Sin by Paul Levine
A Jake Lassiter Mystery (4th in series)
Publisher: Nittany Valley Productions

About Mortal Sin (from the publisher): Jake Lassiter has an ethical dilemma that isn't on the Bar exam.

He's sleeping with Gina Florio and defending Gina's husband Nicky in a wrongful death suit. Complicating the issue: Nicky is mob-connected and homicidal in his own right.

It all begins when environmentalist Peter Tupton freezes to death on Florio's property on the hottest day of a sweltering Miami summer. Hired to defend Florio in a civil suit, Lassiter becomes convinced that Tupton's death was no accident.

The trail of evidence takes Lassiter deep into the Everglades, where Florio has hatched a scheme to bring casino gambling to an Indian reservation. But that's only a cover for a more sinister ploy that oozes corruption, blood, and money. One false move, and Jake will be gator bait.

It's the toughest case yet for the ex-linebacker, ex-public defender, ex-a-lot-of-things. Hard-boiled and philosophical, the savvy lawyer lives by his own rules. One Shot to Open in Theaters December 21st, 2012

One Shot by Lee Child

In a sure sign of confidence in its film, Paramount has moved up the release date for the film adaptation of Lee Child's 2005 Jack Reacher thriller One Shot to December 21st, 2012. (World War Z was currently slated to be released on this date by the studio, but it has been moved to June 21st, 2013.)

The film stars Tom Cruise as Reacher. What we know about the film's storyline seems to follow the overall plot of the book:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter — a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right — and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning — and then beat him shot for shot.

One Shot is directed by Christopher McQuarrie — who won an Academy Award for his original screenplay The Usual Suspects — from an adapted screenplay co-written with Josh Olson.

A False Dawn by Tom Lowe

A False Dawn by Tom Lowe
A Sean O'Brien Mystery
Publisher: Minotaur Books/Kingsbridge

About A False Dawn (from the publisher): After thirteen years as a homicide detective, his wife dead, and his best friend shot in a robbery, Sean O'Brien feels like he's been through a war. He leaves the streets of Miami for a simpler life on the banks of the St. Johns River near the Ocala National Forest. What he discovers there, however, opens a dark door to something more frightening than anything he ever investigated in Miami.

O'Brien has bought an old, rundown home and begun repairs when he sees a man walking chest-deep in the nearby alligator-infested river. The man is holding a pole, searching for something. Soon afterward, O'Brien finds a young woman hidden near the river, and she's clinging to life. She whispers something cryptic in his ear.

O'Brien made a promise to his dead wife, Sherri, that he was through with crime investigation. It was a promise he meant to keep. When he makes a second promise to the brutally beaten girl, it's one he believes the local authorities will keep. Since the victim is a “nobody,” he finds he can't count on them to pursue justice. Torn between his two promises, O'Brien is irrevocably plunged into the cold, lethal world of human trafficking and sexual slavery, where a brilliant killer believes he is working for the greater good, and will alter his evil plan to include O'Brien.

New Swedish Teaser Poster for Snabba Cash II

Snabba Cash II (2012)

A new Swedish teaser poster for Snabba Cash II has been released by the studio (right; click for slightly larger version).

We had originally read that the film was adapted from the final two books in the "Stockholm Noir Trilogy" by crime novelist Jens Lapidus … though we could have been wrong about this. Indeed, if our Swedish-to-English translator is right, this second film is set a couple of years after the events of the first and features the same characters but a new storyline. We've also read that a third film may be planned, with a screenplay to be written by Lapidus. (Snabba Cash, released in 2006, and based on the first book in the trilogy, is coming to theaters in the US this July. And speaking of that first book, it is being published in English in the US in April as Easy Money; it is on our TBR stack.)

Snabba Cash II stars Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as Johan "JW" Westlund, who is drawn into the world of organized crime for the money to support a lifestyle well above his means.

Directed by Babak Najafi from a screenplay co-written by Peter Birro and Maria Karlsson, the film opens in Sweden on August 17th, 2012. Watch a trailer for the film below.

Warner Bros. Options Comic Mandrake the Magician for Film

Mandrake the Magician

Warner Bros. has acquired the film rights to the comic strip character Mandrake the Magician.

Created by Lee Falk, Mandrake the Magician has been mystifying readers since 1934. The dapper, mustached magician works his debonair magic and uses his legendary powers of hypnotism and illusion to combat crime.

This wouldn't be the first time the character appeared on screen. Warren Hull played Mandrake the Magician in a 12-episode serial that was released in 1939. In 1954, a made-for-television film featuring the character aired with Coe Norton starring, with another television movie in 1979 starring Anthony Herrera.

Not unlike what it did for Sherlock Holmes, the studio intends to give Mandrake the Magician a freshening while keeping the time period in which the character appears intact.
