The Clinch Knot by John Galligan

The Clinch Knot by John Galligan
A Ned "Dog" Oglivie Fly Fishing Mystery
Publisher: Tyrus Books

This is the third mystery (of four to date) in this series, a repeat freebie from December 2011.

About The Clinch Knot (from the publisher): The Dog is in Livingston, Montana, daydreaming about fishing the Stone and, as usual, subsisting on Swisher Sweets, vodka-Tang, and the hope that pretending to forget will be enough.

He's forged a few tenuous friendships, and now finds himself watching from the bank as troubled local girl Jesse Ringer leads D'Ontario Sneed into the swift current of young love. It's sweet, really … but some of the locals object to the relationship on the basis of Sneed's skin color.

Then the unthinkable: vibrant, wild Jesse is found shot in the head, and Sneed is passed out in her car, gun beside him, window seams taped, and engine running. Sneed is hospitalized for severe carbon monoxide poisoning and can't string together a sentence to defend himself, so it falls to the Dog.

If only the Dog could run from his life without ending up in the tangle and snarl of the lives of others. A man who wants to lose himself in the current must be careful of his backcast; it'll always keep him tethered to a life he's trying to forget.

Telemystery, the most complete selection of detective, amateur sleuth, private investigator, and suspense television mystery series now available or coming soon to DVD

Telemystery, your source for one of the most comprehensive listings of crime drama, amateur sleuth, private investigator, mystery and suspense television series, mini-series and made-for-television movies, now available on or coming soon to DVD or Blu-ray disc, is profiling two series being released this week.

Maigret (France): Set One, a Telemystery Crime Series

Sporting his pipe that seems a nod to Sherlock Holmes, the pragmatic, reserved and refined Maigret (Bruno Cremer) investigates murders in his singular unhurried manner and inevitably discovers the truth. To crack his cases he peels back the veneer of seemingly idyllic villages and neighborhoods, exposing the criminals who lurk in all levels of society.

Against a backdrop of 1950s Paris and the surrounding French countryside, these original feature-length made-for-television movies based on a character created by Georges Simenon pay homage to one of the most brilliant detective minds of the twentieth century.

Maigret: Set One is available on DVD and consists of 6 episodes — "Maigret in Montmartre", "The Burglar's Wife", "The Flemish Shop", "The Judge", "The Headless Corpse", and "The Crossroads" — that originally aired on French television during 1991 and 1992. The episodes are in French with English subtitles.

Matlock: Season Seven, a Telemystery Crime Series

Andy Griffith stars as Atlanta defense attorney Ben Matlock in Matlock.

For six seasons, Matlock aired on NBC. In this, its seventh (of nine) season, it moves to ABC and finds Matlock reopening a 30-year-old murder case, representing a ghost, and learning to work with his daughter and new partner, Leanne (Brynn Thayer).

Also this season, his trusted colleague Conrad McMasters (Clarence Gilyard, Jr.) is joined by recent law school graduate Cliff Lewis (Daniel Roebuck).

Using his street-savvy tactics and down-home instincts, Matlock always knows how to captivate a jury … and generations of audiences.

Matlock: Season Seven is available on DVD and consists of episodes that originally aired during the spring of 1993.

The Price of Life by Greg McCarthy

The Price of Life by Greg McCarthy
Publisher: Otherworld Publications

About The Price of Life (from the publisher): Eight-year-old Jennifer Haller's brain tumor is killing her. A timely CT scan would likely have saved her, and a new surgery offers hope for a cure, but Julie Haller is crushed when their insurance company refuses to pay for her daughter's operation.

Shortly after Jennifer's diagnosis, Marine Captain Ed Haller loses his leg to a roadside bomb in Iraq. He comes home to rehabilitate while Jennifer wages her own losing battle with cancer and its treatment. Jennifer's death leads the family to Fort Worth lawyer Grant Mercer, whom they hire to sue Jennifer's neurologist.

As Mercer works the case, Julie Haller learns the results of recent tort reform efforts, including a $250,000 limit in medical malpractice cases. She and her husband realize that a quarter-million dollar price tag on a beloved eight-year-old girl is simply inconceivable. They have no interest in the money, focusing instead on their responsibility to honor their daughter by seeking justice for her death.

The murders of a lobbyist in Austin, a state senator on a remote country road, and an insurance executive in New York seem unrelated until Jennifer's doctor is kidnapped. Mercer makes the disturbing connection between the victims and his case, and discovers how far some people will go when the usual avenues of justice are too sharply curtailed.

I enjoyed what little of this purported crime thriller was actually a crime thriller, though I think it could have been vastly improved with a more focused storyline and less overt violence … and a complete rewrite of the whole love-struck nonsense that dominates the first half of the film.
