A Sami Rizzo Mystery
Thomas & Mercer

This is the second mystery in this series to feature the San Diego homicide detective.

About Resuscitation (from the publisher): Two years ago, Sami Rizzo narrowly escaped a brush with death at the hands of a serial killer. After apprehending the killer and bringing him to justice, this life-changing event compels her to resign from the police force. In her heart of hearts, however, she struggles with the decision. But a second serial killer — a well-respected doctor gone astray — uses his charm to seduce his victims and then performs horrific surgical experiments on them. In a final act of depravity, he scatters their mutilated bodies throughout San Diego County.

Feeling a sense of duty and obligation, Sami Rizzo appeals to the police chief and mayor, and they reinstate her as a homicide investigator. As the body count grows and the killer’s experiments become more and more brutal, Sami follows one dead-end lead after another, while trying to deal with a sickly mother and a turbulent relationship with her lover. But then the killer makes a crucial mistake: one of his victims survives. Sami does everything to protect the barely alive victim, but the killer has a different plan …

Mr. E. Reviews Identity

Identity (DVD Cover)
Purchase/Rental Option(s)
Identity on DVD

This 6-episode television series, which originally aired in the UK during the summer of 2010, is marketed as a police procedural about identity theft, but that's a little misleading. Most of the episodes involve using a victim's unknown identity as a means of identifying the culprit, clearly a much broader approach in storytelling. The twist to the series is that one of the police officers is, himself, leading a double life.

First Trailer for Rampart

Rampart (2012)

The first trailer for Rampart, based on a real LAPD scandal from the 1990s, has been released. We've embedded it below.

Co-written by crime novelist James Ellroy, the film stars Woody Harrelson as a corrupt police officer … and nothing fascinates like a dirty cop. In real life they're terrifying, but in the movies their upending of law and order can open deep explorations of psychology, morality and violence.

So meet Dave Brown. Brown is a cop long ago unleashed from the rules of the Los Angeles Police Department. Roving the streets in his black-and-white cruiser, he governs and punishes at will. His home life is a riddle. Somehow he has fathered children with two sisters (Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon). Somehow he still lives casually with them both, slipping in and out of a family life thats as tangled as his long career on the force. His own daughter calls him Date Rape. That's because, years ago, Brown may have killed a rapist and gotten away with it. The shadow of the incident still haunts him, so when his Rampart division gets caught up in a corruption scandal, Brown makes an easy target. As the controversy seeps through the department and into city hall, this hardened, reckless officer finds himself at the center of a sordid L.A. story.

Rampart opens in US theaters on January 27th, 2012.

ABC Announces 2012 Mid-Season Schedule

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

ABC announced its mid-season schedule today and from a "prime time crime" perspective there's not much new to note.

Body of Proof has been extended to a full season with the order of additional episodes and two previously announced mystery thrillers get premiere dates: The River on Tuesday, February 3rd at 9 PM (ET/PT) and Missing on Thursday, March 15th at 8 PM (ET/PT).

Showtime Renews Dexter for Seasons Seven, Eight

Dexter (Showtime)

Showtime announced this morning that it has renewed Dexter for two more seasons.

"Dexter's enormous success is a real tribute to the great achievements of its cast, producers, and the powerhouse performance of Michael C. Hall," said David Nevins, Showtime's President of Entertainment. "The series is bigger than it's ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I'm excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out."

Based on a character created by crime novelist Jeff Lindsay — whose sixth and most recent "Dexter" novel, Double Dexter, was published last month — the series stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department who moonlights as a serial killer.

Capitol Reflections by Jonathan Javitt

Capitol Reflections by Jonathan Javitt
Gwen Maulder (1st in series)
The Story Plant

Jonathan Javitt's background as a physician and scientist, who has served as a senior White House health advisor in the three presidential administrations, serves him well in his debut political/medical thriller. In addition to his White House roles, Javitt serves as a Senior Fellow in the National Security Health Policy Center and advises the World Bank and the health ministries of several foreign countries. Though this title, originally published in 2008, is listed as the first in a series, the second has yet to be published.

About Capitol Reflections (from the publisher): When Marci Newman, the best friend of FDA scientist Gwen Maulder, dies mysteriously, Gwen refuses to believe that the cause was natural. Marci was simply too young and too healthy. Gwen makes it her mission to determine why Marci really died, even though her superiors and even her husband implore her to move on. What she discovers is much bigger and much more horrifying than she ever anticipated.

Her efforts will put her in opposition to some very influential people, people who have every reason to prevent her from discovering their secret … and, more importantly, the power to stop her. As people keep dying, Gwen must go underground to find the answers — risking her life and the lives of those she loves in an attempt to prevent a nationwide disaster.
