The Secret in Their Eyes by Eduardo Sacheri

About The Secret in Their Eyes (from the publisher): Benjamín Chaparro is a retired detective still obsessed by the brutal, decades-old rape and murder of a young married woman in her own bedroom. While attempting to write a book about the case, he revisits the details of the investigation. As he reaches into the past, Chaparro also recalls the beginning of his long, unrequited love for Irene Hornos, then just an intern, now a respected judge. Set in the Buenos Aires of the 1970s, Sacheri’s tale reveals the underpinnings of Argentina’s Dirty War and takes on the question of justice—what it really means and in whose hands it belongs.

— ◊ —

About the author: Eduardo Sacheri was born in Buenos Aires in 1967. His first collection of short stories, Esperándolo a Tito y otros cuentos de fútbol ("Waiting for Tito and Other Football Stories"), was published in Spain in 2000 under the title Los traidores y otros cuentos ("The Traitors and Other Stories"). Three of his other collections were published between 2001 and 2007, all of which have been bestsellers in Argentina. The film adaptation of The Secret in Their Eyes won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010.

Film Adaptation of Ken Bruen's London Boulevard Now on VOD, Limited Theater Release in November

London Boulevard (2010)

The film adaptation of Ken Bruen's 2009 thriller London Boulevard was released last year in the UK, but at the time a US release date had not yet been announced. And we hadn't heard any more about it until this week, when we noticed a US trailer for the film had been posted online (embedded below). It is essentially the same trailer we posted last year for the film's UK release, but it still doesn't mention a theatrical release for the US.

Well, there's probably a good reason for that because the film is already available as video-on-demand — though there is no DVD announced yet for the film — and is scheduled for a limited release next month.

London Boulevard follows an ex-con trying to make a fresh start in a relationship with a reclusive actress. Marketed as a sexy, stylish gangster thriller bristling with wit and brutal intrigue, the film stars Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley as star-crossed lovers who run afoul of one of London’s most vicious crime bosses.

You can watch London Boulevard via Amazon Instant or through your cable provider. It will also be in select theaters on November 11th (though we can't find a list of cities where it will be playing).

About The Phoenix Apostles (from the publisher): Seneca Hunt is reporting on the opening of Montezuma’s tomb in Mexico City when the dig team, led by her fiancé Daniel Bernal, learns that the remains of the Aztec emperor are missing. Within moments of the discovery, an apparent terrorist attack kills everyone at the site—including Daniel. Seneca barely escapes the carnage.

Determined to get answers, Seneca starts investigating. She finds out that someone is stealing the remains of the most infamous mass murderers in history—and plotting to slaughter millions in the name of an ancient cult. Teaming up with bestselling novelist Matt Everhart, Seneca tries to stay one step ahead of those who want her dead as she and Matt follow a deadly 2000-year-old trail that leads back to the death of Jesus Christ.

Sony to Adapt John Burdett's Sonchai Jitpleecheep Crime Novels?

Bangkok Tattoo by John Burdett

File this under pure speculation.

Two days ago Sony registered dozens of domain names consisting of variations on book titles by John Burdett, with the notable exception of the first in the series, Bangkok 8, which was optioned separately back in 2007 by Millennium Films (though no film adaptation was ever made).

This is leading some to conclude that a deal has been struck between Sony and the author to adapt the subsequent books in the series, including the yet to be published fifth book, Vulture Peak (Knopf, January 2012 hardcover), though there has been no confirmation of such from the studio or the author.

Burdett's crime novels feature Royal Thai Police Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep.

A Natalie Barnes Mystery
Midnight Ink

This is the third mystery in this series, featuring the owner of the Gray Whale Inn on Cranberry Island, Maine.

About Dead and Berried (from the publisher): Developers have returned to Cranberry Island and this time they're planning to wipe out a natural cranberry bog, along with the island's namesake berries, to build a luxury subdivision. Natalie Barnes isn't sweet on the idea of commercial interests souring their cozy oasis, but the single innkeeper has other problems on her plate: a withering relationship with her best friend Charlene, the sudden appearance of her ex-fiancé with a tempting proposal, and eerie bumps in the night suggesting the Gray Whale Inn is haunted. Worst of all, there's a killer on the loose, picking off people like ripe fruit.

When Charlene's lover — the handsome chaplain with a stake in the development — is stabbed to death, Natalie promises to find the murderer for her grief-stricken friend … who's also the number-one suspect.
