Hypothermia by Arnaldur Indriðason

About Hypothermia (from the publisher): Inspector Erlunder has spent his entire career struggling to evade the ghosts of his past. But ghosts are visiting him, both in the form of a séance attended by a dead woman and also in the reemerging puzzle of two young people who went missing 30 years ago. And there’s the ghost of the detective’s disastrous marriage, which, despite the pleas of his drug-addled daughter, he is unwilling to confront. In addition, he’s still obsessed with the disappearance of his brother, who vanished without a trace when they were boys.

He can only run from his ghosts for so long, and, when they finally catch up with him, Erlunder is forced to face the heart shattering truth of his past.

Lionsgate Acquires Film Rights to the Chaos Walking Trilogy of YA Thrillers

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Lionsgate has acquired the film rights to the young adult thrillers collectively known as the "Chaos Walking Trilogy" by Patrick Ness.

Published in 2008, the first book in the series, The Knife of Never Letting Go, introduces Todd Hewitt, the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him — something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World?

"Apart from the story elements, the world in the stories is so vividly imagined," said Lionsgate co-COO and motion picture group president Joe Drake. "These are books, much like The Hunger Games, that we feel truly beg to be brought to life on film."

The other two books in the trilogy are The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men.

Telemystery: SyFy Developing Series based on The Adjustment Bureau

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

SyFy is reportedly developing a television series based on the recently released film The Adjustment Bureau, itself an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story "Adjustment Team". Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin (No Ordinary Family, Smallville) are writing the pilot screenplay.

What happens when you discover that the life you've been living has been carefully planned by someone else … and that your future is also in their hands? That the choices you've made and will make are the result of subtle — and sometimes not so subtle — changes in your environment initiated by a third party? This is the premise of The Adjustment Bureau, a film we generally liked, though we didn't really buy the whole romantic relationship subplot involving David Norris (played by Matt Damon) and Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt). (You can read Mr. E.'s full review here.) What worked best in the film is what would probably work best in a series, the opportunity to explore a bit more how the Adjustment Bureau (or Team) perform their tasks to achieve their objectives.

How he solves anything is a mystery.

Bored To Death: Season Two is available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and consists of 8 episodes that originally aired on HBO from September through November 2010.

Review: Murder by Mocha by Cleo Coyle

Murder by Mocha by Cleo Coyle

Murder by Mocha by Cleo Coyle. A Clare Cosi, Coffeehouse Mystery. Berkley Prime Crime Hardcover, August 2011.

This entertaining extension to a solid series is flawed — only slightly — by an unlikely premise involving "Mocha Magic Coffee", one that risks not only the life of the Village Blend's owner — that goes without saying, since it happens with every book! — but improbably the coffeehouse's reputation and good name.

Review: The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn

The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn

The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn. A Chet and Bernie Mystery. Atria Books Hardcover, September 2011.

The storyline in this mystery is well crafted, if not altogether mysterious or suspenseful, but the real reason to read the books in this series is the poignant and entertaining relationship that exists between the two members of this investigative team.

Liquid Smoke by Jeff Shelby
A Noah Braddock Mystery (3rd in series)
Tyrus Books

We recently reviewed this book, calling it "a superior novel of suspense, relatively short in length but perfectly paced. The storyline is deceptively simple in its scope, yet there is nothing simple in how it unfolds."

About Liquid Smoke (from the publisher): Private eye Noah Braddock has finally found peace in his once tumultuous relationship with Detective Liz Santangelo and has called a tentative truce with his alcoholic mother, Carolina. So when lawyer Darcy Gill demands that he look into a hopeless death row case, he’s more interested in catching some waves before San Diego’s rare winter weather takes hold. Then Darcy plays her trump card: the man scheduled to die — convicted of killing two men in cold blood — is the father Noah never knew.

This book was originally published in Germany in 2008 under the title Die Henkerstochter. The author has since written two sequels featuring the hangman's daughter, neither of which has (yet) been translated into English.

About The Hangman's Daughter (from the publisher): Magdalena, the clever and headstrong daughter of Bavarian hangman Jakob Kuisl, lives with her father outside the village walls and is destined to be married off to another hangman’s son — except that the town physician’s son is hopelessly in love with her. And her father’s wisdom and empathy are as unusual as his despised profession. It is 1659, the Thirty Years’ War has finally ended, and there hasn’t been a witchcraft mania in decades. But now, a drowning and gruesomely injured boy, tattooed with the mark of a witch, is pulled from a river and the villagers suspect the local midwife, Martha Stechlin.

Jakob Kuisl is charged with extracting a confession from her and torturing her until he gets one. Convinced she is innocent, he, Magdalena, and her would-be suitor to race against the clock to find the true killer. Approaching Walpurgisnacht, when witches are believed to dance in the forest and mate with the devil, another tattooed orphan is found dead and the town becomes frenzied. More than one person has spotted what looks like the devil — a man with a hand made only of bones. The hangman, his daughter, and the doctor’s son face a terrifying and very real enemy.
