One summer while in my twenties I went to the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop in Clarion, Pennsylvania. While there I sold my first short story. Which was encouraging, but the sale turned out to be not as important as a piece of advice given to the students by Robin Scott Wilson, the man who ran the workshop. He advised us to read outside our genre. In particular, he advised us to read books by Raymond Chandler, a mystery writer who was a master of description and character-building.

I took Robin's advice and became quite a fan of Mr. Chandler's work. My favorite of his books is Farewell, My Lovely, a story which contains some of the best characters ever: the bear-like and soulful bank robber, Moose Malloy; and Jessie Florian, a obscene drunk of a woman. You wouldn't want to know either of these people in real life, but as characters in a novel they are spectacular.

The peculiar collision of science fiction and mystery always appealed to me (I also once wrote a science fiction western, but that's another story) and so it was that when, many years later, I was asked by a book packager to write a mystery novel based on a piece of artwork he had lying around, I chose Chandler's work as a model and then decided to add a few speculative elements. The packager wanted the novel to be called Surfing Samurai Robots, and so it was. My hero called himself Zoot Marlowe; he was an alien from another planet who came to earth to solve crimes like his hero -- guess who. The book was fairly popular and spawned two sequels. To this day, when I appear someplace to sign my work, Surfing Samurai Robots is one of the books I inevitably sign. And I still get email from fans asking me to write more adventures of Zoot and his robot companion, Bill.

But I can't.

Oh, I'd love to, and there is no shortage of ideas, but because I wrote the Zoot books for a packager I don't own the rights to the books or to any of the characters in them. As you might imagine, this irked me considerably. So I did what any writer might do in similar circumstances: I wrote a novel that was kinda sorta like Surfing Samurai Robots but different.

Originally I called this new novel With Gods Like These, which I thought of as the first part of the question: With Gods like these, who needs enemies? Then it occurred to me that I was missing a bet. It was possible that by changing the name of the book to Dangerous Hardboiled Magicians I could key into the psyches of all those readers who had enjoyed Surfing Samurai Robots. So far, no one has admitted that he or she purchased the book because of the similarity in titles, but I am still hopeful about my strategy. You never know when somebody is going to like a title just because it contains three interesting words.

The hero of Dangerous Hardboiled Magicians is Turner Cronyn, a guy who became a hardboiled PI after he washed out of the wizard academy. In his first adventure he needs to avoid supernatural creatures who want him dead for reasons that are not clear until much later. Meanwhile he is helped by a beautiful woman who may or may not be a goddess.

Dangerous Hardboiled Magicians is available at the Kindle Store of Amazon.com. You can read the first chapter for free. Seems like a deal.

Her little sister, Sookie, and their bookworm neighbor try to tell her there’s something … just not right about the old school on the hill, and their worries are confirmed when they uncover a mystery about an entire soccer team that disappeared many years ago.

OMN Welcomes Caroline A. Shearer, Author of the Metaphysical Mystery Dead End Date

Omnimystery News: Authors on Tour

Omnimystery News is delighted to welcome Caroline A. Shearer as our guest blogger. Caroline's metaphysical mystery, Dead End Date (Absolute Love Publishing, December 2009 Trade Paperback, 978-0-615-33932-0), introduces a lightworker named Faith.

Before we get to today's post by Caroline, in which she writes about angels, we had to ask her: What is a lightworker?

"Lightworkers are a type of individual whose purpose is to help humanity, and humanity, like all in the universe, is composed of energy. Lightworkers raise the vibration of the planet simply by being here and also by performing acts of love and kindness. When we think about all that is good within our reality and bring it down to one word, that word is love, and lightworkers are here to teach the world about love."

Studies consistently show the vast majority of people believe in angels, and one doesn’t have to look far to find examples of people who believe they have been helped in some way by an angel. Many will even say angels have saved their lives!

I was taught about the existence of angels from a very young age, and I even have a framed picture from my childhood of the famous scene of an angel guarding two small children who are crossing a bridge. I was raised to believe I had a guardian angel who was always with me, and I welcomed that idea. Perhaps because of this, I always have felt protected, in all situations.

As I became an adult and began looking into this concept of angels, there is much that I have brought into what I consider “my truth.” I still believe in guardian angels, and now I believe that most people have at least two angels with them at all times. I believe we can call on more angels any time we want, and they will respond immediately. I also have come to understand the real significance of “free will.” We are here to evolve our souls, and as such, we have to ask angels to help us, or they will simply lovingly support us from the background. The exception to this would be in the case of an emergency.

In my (funny to me) way of thinking, I interpreted this piece of knowledge as, “Hey, my angels must get bored when I forget to ask for help!” Ever since then, I have made specific efforts to ask for help, understanding my angels will act when it is for my highest and greatest good.

One way angels help me all the time is with my worries. I used to be a worrier, but I began asking my angels to hold on to my worries for me. That way, if my freaking out side pops up, I know my worries are still technically there, but in the meantime, I know I can release them and move forward with whatever is positive in my life. It works really, really well!

Right now, this very moment, you can close your eyes and talk to your angels. It is that easy! Listening can take some practice, but we can all do that, too! Angels will communicate in whatever way you are able to receive it – so that may be with a song on the radio, a sign on the side of the road, a sentence you just happen to overhear in a crowd ... Be open to receiving their messages, and you will find them!

Now, what does all this have to do with me, and my guest post? Well, angels appear in my mystery novel, Adventures of a Lightworker: Dead End Date, and my main character, Faith, has a special relationship with them. It is a fun and eye-opening mystery – I hope you’ll read it!

New Quad Poster for The Eagle

The Eagle (2011)

Last month we featured a new trailer for The Eagle, the film adaptation of Rosemary Cutcliff's young adult historical novel The Eagle of the Ninth.

Now a new international quad poster for the film has been unveiled, depicting the film's two leads: Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell as two men -- master and slave -- on a dangerous journey. (Click on the image to see a larger size.)

Also starring Donald Sutherland and Mark Strong, the film is set in 120 A.D., where twenty years earlier the Ninth Roman Legion marched north into the wilds of Britain beyond Agricola’s Wall and disappeared without a trace. Now, Marcus Flavius Aquila (Tatum), the son of the unit’s commander, embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of their disappearance and recover the lost eagle standard of the Ninth, symbol of a legion’s—and his family’s—honor.

The Eagle opens in theaters February 11th, 2011 (and apparently March 2011 internationally).

Red Jade by Henry Chang. A Jack Yu Mystery. Soho Crime Hardcover, October 2010.

Having NYPD homicide detective Jack Yu leave the confines of NYC's Chinatown that made the series so engaging in the first two books seems to lessen its appeal here. This third entry remains an interesting police procedural ... but somehow not an altogether special one.
