Mystery Book Review: Deadly Charm by Claudia Mair Burney

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of Deadly Charm by Claudia Mair Burney. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Deadly Charm by Claudia Mair Burney

An Amanda Bell Brown Mystery

Howard Books (Trade Paperback)
ISBN-10: 1-4165-5195-6 (1416551956)

Publication Date: March 2009
List Price: $13.99

Review: With some passages that read like rap, and others like scripture, Claudia Mair Burney’s Deadly Charm has an enchantment all its own. The third in Burney’s Amanda Bell Brown series, the mystery in this one is as much about whether forensic psychologist Bell and her Detroit PD detective husband, Jazz, will remain an inter-racial twosome, and what “the egg size growth in [her] lower abdomen” is, as it is about what happened during the drowning of three-year-old Zeekie Thunder, the youngest child of charismatic but lecherous preaching personality, sixtyish Ezekiel Thunder and his early twenties wife, Nikki, with eyes for Jazz. The thirty-five-year-old Bell narrates the story in a breezy, colloquial style and with clip along dialogue that propels the reader towards the novel’s conclusion and past a couple of questionable turns in the plot.

For Bell “there’s lostsa splainin’ to do” as she discusses her convoluted three-way relationship between herself and ex-boyfriend, a 28-year-old white preacher and community activist named, Rocky, and her estranged husband. Then, there’s her revelation of an even earlier failed marriage and a miscarriage, and as the story progresses there are background checks that reveal a trail of the deaths under mysterious circumstances of other peoples’ ex-partners and former children. There’s also the rationale for preacher Thunder’s philandering, Jazz’s bouts with the bottle, a broken promise to raise young Zeekie from the dead, and the cause for the cases of gastroenteritis that almost spell lights out for both Bell and Jazz before they nail the psychopathic perpetrator.

Although the setting is often at Rocky’s Rock House church where serious undertakings occur, there is humour there, too, when Bell is accosted by a demented Sister Lou demanding Bell be exorcised, a performance that embarrasses Bell when it hits national television. Lou is the same “Sistah” who wants to exorcise Jazz’s sexual demons, and was present with Ezekiel Thunder’s older children, 12-year-old Zeke and 15-year-old Zekia, when toddler Zeekie died. Bell’s Ann Arbor pad is aptly described as her “little slice of paradise: shabby chic meets paradise,” and she perceives Jazz’s self image as “an angry man with a black heart and a haunted mind” while he, in turn, sees “Blondilocks” Rocky as a “blond boy toy” and Bell as a wannabe “Columbo.” Readers of Christian literature will appreciate the various religious references that are woven into the story in an unobtrusive but convincing way, and everyone will appreciate having a pleasantly entertaining read.

Mystery Book Review: A Deadly Habit by Andrea Sisco

Review: Andrea Sisco introduces Twin Cities probation officer Pen Santucci, who's trying to avoid being arrested for the murder of her ex-husband, in A Deadly Habit.

Pen, short for Penelope, had broken in to her ex-husband's house to retrieve among other things her first edition of Sue Grafton's A is for Alibi, a book definitely worth committing a felony for, when she stumbles over the body of the former man of her dreams. As a probation officer she knows a thing or two about how the law works, and realizes she will be suspect number one (and maybe suspect number only one). She asks a local priest she's known since childhood for help, which arrives in the form of a high-powered attorney, Marco Silva. While Marco does his best keeping Pen out of jail, Pen does her best to discover who killed her ex ... and why.

A Deadly Habit is one of those books that can be defined by its opening line; if it causes the reader to grin, it's definitely worth reading on: "'It's been seventeen years since my last confession, Father.' I didn't bother to add 'and seven months and thirteen days.' It didn't make a difference since I'm not Catholic." Pen is almost the very definition of irreverent, but in a respectful way. If that sounds like a contradiction in terms, it is ... and so is Pen. This is really a character-driven mystery, the character being Pen.

Though Pen's ex was a successful, if less than totally ethical, attorney, there should be no shortage of people who might want him dead. Yet it isn't until halfway through the book that credible suspects are introduced. For some, that may be a little too long to wait for the whodunit element to get started. Still, Pen is a personable companion to pass the time with and her antics in A Deadly Habit will keep many smiling throughout.

Special thanks to Andrea Sisco for providing an ARC of A Deadly Habit for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): When Probation Officer, Penelope (Pen) Santucci was a child, she dreamt of being a nun. She dressed in bed sheets and roller-skated regularly into the confessional of Father Daniel Kopecky. There she bared her soul, fabricating sins only a precocious eight-year-old could invent. As a twenty-seven-year-old woman, she's doing the same thing, sans the roller skates and bed sheets. Only this time, she isn't inventing stories. She's confessing her involvement in a murder; a murder she didn't commit, but one in which she is the most promising suspect.

Wisecracking, safecracking Pen lures an elderly priest and a young nun into committing felonies on their wild search for the truth. Hardly appropriate behavior for the dedicated probation officer, but while Pen believes in her job, she has little faith in the justice system. Unfortunately, Pen digs herself deeper into trouble and straight into a muddy grave, dragging her sexy attorney in with her. If they ever get out of it alive, he plans to wring her neck himself. That is, if the thugs who are after the money she found don't get her first.

Mystery Bestsellers for July 24, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending July 24, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

The top 6 mystery bestsellers are the same from last week with Finger Lickin' Fifteen by remaining at the top of the list this week.

Rain Gods by James Lee Burke

Debuting last week but moving up to 10th position this week is Rain Gods, the second mystery to feature Sheriff Hackberry Holland by James Lee Burke; the first was published in 1971. When Hackberry Holland became sheriff of a tiny Texas town near the Mexican border, he'd hoped to leave certain things behind: his checkered reputation, his haunted dreams, and his obsessive memories of the good life with his late wife, Rie. But the discovery of the bodies of nine illegal aliens, machine-gunned to death and buried in a shallow grave behind a church, soon makes it clear that he won't escape so easily. As Hack and Deputy Sheriff Pam Tibbs attempt to untangle the threads of this complex and grisly case, a damaged young Iraq veteran, Pete Flores, and his girlfriend, Vikki Gaddis, are running for their lives, hoping to outwit the bloodthirsty criminals who want to kill Pete for his involvement in the murders. The only trouble is, Pete doesn't know who he's running from: drunk and terrified, he fled the scene of the crime when the shooting began. And there's a long list of people who want Pete and Vikki dead: crime boss Hugo Cistranos, who hired Pete for the operation; Nick Dolan, a strip club owner and small-time gangster with revenge on his mind; and a mysterious God-fearing serial-killer-for-hire known as Preacher Jack Collins, with enigmatic motives of his own. With the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and a host of cold-blooded killers on Pete and Vikki's trail, it's up to Sheriff Holland to find them first and figure out who's behind the mass murder before anyone else ends up dead.

The Defector by Daniel Silva

Entering the list in 15th position is the 9th Gabriel Allon thriller, The Defector by Daniel Silva. Six months after the dramatic conclusion of Moscow Rules, Gabriel has returned to the tan hills of Umbria to resume his honeymoon with his new wife, Chiara, and restore a seventeenth-century altarpiece for the Vatican. But his idyllic world is once again thrown into turmoil with shocking news from London. The defector and former Russian intelligence officer Grigori Bulganov, who saved Gabriel’s life in Moscow, has vanished without a trace. British intelligence is sure he was a double agent all along, but Gabriel knows better. He also knows he made a promise. In the days to come, Gabriel and his team of operatives will find themselves in a deadly duel of nerve and wits with one of the world’s most ruthless men: the murderous Russian oligarch and arms dealer Ivan Kharkov. It will take him from a quiet mews in London, to the shores of Lake Como, to the glittering streets of Geneva and Zurich, and, finally, to a heart-stopping climax in the snowbound birch forests of Russia. Faced with the prospect of losing the one thing he holds most dear, Gabriel will be tested in ways he never imagined possible. And his life will never be the same.
