Mystery Bestsellers for March 13, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending March 13, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

Little change in the top 7 from last week, with last week's profiled bestseller, Don't Look Twice by , making the greatest move this week, landing in 8th position.

Dead Silence by Randy Wayne White

New this week in the 15th position is the 16th mystery in the Doc Ford series, Dead Silence by . Winter in New York City: Amid sleet and snow, Doc Ford is at the Explorers Club with his new friend, former (and maybe current) British agent Sir James Montbard, researching a jungle expedition and awaiting the arrival of an attractive U.S. senator with whom Ford has become more than friendly. Her car pulls up, she starts to get out -- and the unthinkable happens: an abduction attempt right before Ford’s eyes. Ford engages, managing to save the senator, but the companion in her car is not so lucky. A fourteen-year-old Minnesota boy, in New York as the prize for an essay-writing contest, he is snatched and vanishes -- dead, authorities fear, until they receive the kidnappers’ ultimatum. Ford goes on the hunt, an odyssey that brings him first to Long Island, then to Florida, but if what happened before was unthinkable, it’s nothing compared with what he discovers. The boy’s captors have a definite agenda, and to make sure he isn’t rescued before their thirty-six-hour deadline is up, they’ve put him someplace they’re sure no one will find him: they’ve buried him alive. But there’s something about the boy his captors do not know. He has a past, as do Doc Ford and many of the other key players in these extraordinary events. And before those thirty-six hours are over, all those pasts will catch up to the present -- with catastrophic results. Publishers Weekly calls Dead Silence "high-octane", adding "the action roars along as Doc does what Doc does best: kick butt."

Mystery Book Review: Deep Waters by Kate Charles

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of Deep Waters by Kate Charles. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

A Callie Anson Mystery

Poisoned Pen Press (Hardcover)
ISBN-10: 1-59058-602-6 (1590586026)
ISBN-13: 978-1-59058-602-0 (9781590586020)
Publication Date: March 2009
List Price: $24.95

Review: Anglican curate Callie Anson finds herself drawn into the investigation surrounding the death of a baby in Deep Waters, the third mystery in this series by Kate Charles.

Callie’s troubles begin on a stormy windy night when her roof tiles begin to slide and tear her roof apart. It will take the roofer from six weeks to two months to repair it. She is forced to move into the vicar’s home next to the church where she is not particularly welcomed by his wife. While there a baby girl, the 3-month-old child of celebrities, is found dead in her crib. Detective Inspector Neville Stewart is called away from his honeymoon to investigate the death. The first theory is SIDS. Mark Lombardi, a Catholic who is in love with Callie, is the family liaison officer. He calls Callie since the parents lived within her constituency. The parents decide they want Callie rather than a priest to carry out official duties surrounding the baby's funeral. But there's something else: the baby had a hairline fracture in her neck, the possible result of being shaken too hard. About the same time, DI Stewart and Mark are notified of the death of Joe di Stefano, Mark’s brother-in-law, though there is a mystery surrounding his fatal heart attack. Mark is put on leave because of his family association. Mark’s niece, Chiara, being fond of Callie, leans on her for comfort in her grief. Mark’s sister, however, tells Mark in no uncertain terms that Callie to back off. If Chiara is to talk to anyone is it to be with her or their priest. Can the strain in Callie and Mark’s relationship be revived after Mark issues his sister’s ultimatum? And what will happen to Stewart’s marriage after he chooses his job over his new wife?

Deep Waters is an excellent mystery. Not only is the storyline compelling, but the characters have an emotional range that adds depth and interest for the reader, and the relationship between Callie and Mark is particularly noteworthy. There's also the subplot about celebrities, how easily they are popularized by the press and how quickly they can be forgotten by the public. The actions of the tabloid press are brought to bear here, how a scoop can make or break a journalist's reputation, regardless of who might be hurt in the process or even if the truth is ever reported. This is a series that continues to evolve and improve with each succeeding book.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Deep Waters and to Poisoned Pen Press for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): In a culture obsessed with celebrity, baby Muffin’s death is big news. Crib death? Or something more sinister? Everyone wants to know, including the police.

Whatever the truth, the bereaved parents -- celebrity couple Jodee and Chazz -- live in curate Callie Anson’s London parish, and Callie becomes involved with funeral arrangements, despite the disapproval of her vicar and his wife.

Detective Inspector Neville Stewart is recalled from his honeymoon to investigate the case -- with disastrous personal results. And journalist Lilith Noone’s professional future is on the line, as she is sucked more and more deeply into her own flirtation with celebrity culture.

Meanwhile, for police family liaison officer Mark Lombardi, the death of baby Muffin is eclipsed by another death, much closer to home, and he finds himself in an impossible position, torn between his loyalty to his family and his growing love for Callie.

Sarah Weinman over on The Daily Beast has revealed that the bestselling author of Dog On It, , is in fact suspense novelist .

As Weinman notes, "The book world's increasingly dog-eat-dog climate works against writers like Abrahams. Honing a subtle, unclassifiable voice requires time publishers no longer have to invest. So Abrahams decided to say goodbye to Peter Abrahams, Cape Cod-based creator of psychological suspense, and hello instead to Spencer Quinn, Cape Cod-based author of the smash-hit series debut Dog On It. The book features one of the most appealing narrators to come down the mystery-novel pike in quite some time: Chet the dog, the steady and stalwart companion of private investigator Bernie Little."

Perfect Crime to Celebrate its 22nd Anniversary and 9000th Performance at NYC's Snapple Theater Center

Do you know the secret behind Perfect Crime, the long-running mystery play about to celebrate its 22nd anniversary and 9,000th performance at New York City’s Snapple Theater Center? Perfect Crime has been running longer than any other play in the history of New York theater – longer than Mamma Mia, longer than Wicked, even longer than Cats. Through the years over a million and a half audience members have watched the play’s taut, compelling storyline unfold onstage at this New York institution The New York Times calls “a wonderfully puzzling urban legend.”

A secluded mansion. A would-be murderess. The perfect crime. Margaret Brent is an accomplished Connecticut psychiatrist – and potential cold-blooded killer. When her wealthy husband turns up dead, she gets caught in the middle of a terrifying game of cat and mouse with a deranged patient and the handsome but duplicitous investigator assigned to the case. The play contains many unexpected revelations and well-timed surprises and even the most hardcore mystery fan will be kept guessing until the final startling twist. It’s “a true New York mystery,” according to New York magazine, “with gunshots, mistaken identities, a silly romantic subplot and a creepy painting that purportedly holds all the answers.”

The cast contains a colorful assortment of archetypal mystery characters played with a mix of smoldering intensity and laugh-out-loud humor. There’s the leading lady, a brilliant doctor with secrets to spare, played by Catherine Russell. The detective assigned to her case, Inspector Ascher, is played with grit and gusto by All My Children leading man Richard Shoberg. Rounding out the characters are Catherine’s dashing husband (and potential victim) Harrison and her comically unbalanced patient Lionel, played by Broadway veterans Patrick Ryan Sullivan and Michael Brian Dunn. Patrick Robustelli rounds out the cast as David Breuer, the host of a local cable television show.

Perfect Crime attracts all sorts of audiences: mystery buffs trying to figure out the play’s legendary ending; couples out for date night; book clubs looking for spirited discussion; fans of television shows like Law & Order. There have even been special performances for NYPD detectives (who unsurprisingly seem to figure out more clues than anyone else), Mensa members, and actual figures from the world of crime like Claus von Bulow, Carolyn Warmus and Michael Milken.

Besides being the longest-running play in New York City history, Perfect Crime contains another world record. Catherine Russell has been playing the role of Margaret since the very first performance in 1987. She has acted in every single performance except four in the show’s 22-year history. (She missed four performances to attend her siblings’ weddings.) History is made every night at Perfect Crime as Ms. Russell takes the stage in her complex role, and missing her performance would be the ultimate crime.

Right now tickets for this funny, sexy whodunit are available for just $41-$51 by calling the box office at (212) 921-7862 or Ticketmaster.com at (212) 307-4100. Perfect Crime is performed eight times a week at The Snapple Theater Center, located at 1627 Broadway (at 50th Street) in Times Square. And on April 18, 2009 Perfect Crime will celebrate its 22nd anniversary and 9,000th performance with a special post-performance cocktail party to which everyone holding a ticket for that evening’s performance is invited.

Experience the shocking ending already seen by over a million and a half people and make a date with Perfect Crime today.

Thanks to John Capo, DBS Press, for submitting this article to MBN. For more information about the play, please visit the Perfect Crime website.

A Pucci Lewis Mystery

Poisoned Pen Press (Hardcover)
ISBN-10: 1-59058-579-8 (1590585798)
ISBN-13: 978-1-59058-579-5 (9781590585795)
Publication Date: March 2009
List Price: $24.95

Review: Pucci Lewis, a Women's Air Force Service Pilot, is on an incredibly exciting assignment, off to Hollywood to make a documentary on the work of the WASPs during World War II in Hollywood Buzz, the second mystery in this series by Margit Liesche.

For the most part, Pucci is assigned to ferrying fighter planes, though she recently was on an undercover job in Detroit. The operation was a success but the traitor, a double agent code-named Cardillac, escaped. Her post this time is in Hollywood to replace her friend and sister WASP Frankie. Frankie’s plane, believed to be sabotaged, forced her to go down in flames. Maybe with her investigative skills Pucci will be able to seek out the person or persons who sabotaged the plane. Frankie now lies badly burned and in a coma at the local hospital. Pucci ends up staying at the home the Dunns, friends of her boss, who own a real Beverly Hills mansion. These friends, however, mysteriously up and leave on a moments notice, although no one knows where they go. It could be to Florida, Washington or Cairo. Ilke Maki, their maid and wannabe starlet, is the “niece” of Bela Lugosi, a frequent visitor to the mansion. Ilke, a Gypsy, is a refugee from Hungary and says she has God-given insights and many stories to tell. Would these stories have anything to do with the war effort, either on Hitler’s side or America’s side? The government and the Hollywood producers are creating a documentary that will be informative as well as compelling in order to support patriotism and show that women can be just efficient in the war effort as men.

While going to the studios to talk about the filming of the planes, Pucci finds incriminating cans containing film of propaganda extolling Hitler’s Nazism. She also finds the same type containers in the home of the Dunns. Does this mean that the Dunns are double agents? When a well-known filmmaker is killed, Pucci realizes that enemies are right there in the studio. One of the producers wants to show a film of Frankie’s burning crash, against the wishes of Pucci. She thinks it will show that women cannot control planes as well as men and how can that help the war effort? Some of the writers and aides have drug problems making their tongues loose. Pucci takes advantage of this and learns a lot from one drugged-out writer who seems to know something about Frankie’s plane. When she gets an earring shaped like a swastika in the bottom of her tea cup, she knows the enemy is within the walls of the sound stages, and that now, her life, too, is in danger. Bravely she takes a plane up only to find it losing power. Will she go down in flames too? Has Cardillac returned? If so, will Pucci be able to capture her this time?

Hollywood Buzz is a delightfully entertaining mystery, especially for those readers who remember the great Hollywood stars of the 1940s. The author tells of the making of the Victory Shorts starring soldier/actors Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Ronald Reagan, and many others. Pucci seems to interact with these stars on a daily basis during her investigation. But rather than detract from the story, they enhance it by injecting a realism that brings the plot alive. Hollywood Buzz is a wonderful mystery and readers will look forward to seeing Pucci Lewis in her next adventure.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Hollywood Buzz and to Poisoned Pen Press for providing an ARC of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Pucci Lewis was used to ferrying fighter planes and undercover work. But it’s the dark hours of WWII, and Hollywood’s biggest stars, studio moguls, and Washington bureaucrats are working hand-in-glove to merge entertainment and propaganda. Pucci has been dispatched to the First Motion Picture Unit, where a make-or-break documentary on the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) is underway.

Pucci is stepping in for a sister-WASP, now hospitalized in critical condition after an all-too-deliberate plane crash. But who’s the saboteur? Why the cover-up? Pucci is drawn into a high-profile homicide. A big-name director has been murdered, possibly by Nazi operatives. Military intelligence wants Pucci to learn what she can from her inside position.

Bela Lugosi is a frequent visitor to the Beverly Hills mansion where Pucci is temporarily billeted. His “niece,” a rising starlet and also the housekeeper, has a history with the Hungarian resistance. But Pucci doesn’t trust the girl.

Can Pucci steadfastly maneuver through movie land and its narcissistic denizens, finally unraveling the uncertainties to prove she has the right stuff?

New Mysteries: Sherlock Holmes and the Morphine Gambit by Jason Cooke

Sherlock Holmes and the Morphine Gambit, by Jason Cooke

Antony Richards of Baker Street Studios alerted us to the release of a new Sherlock Holmes novel, Sherlock Holmes and the Morphine Gambit by Jason Cooke. While newsworthy in its own right, what makes this even more interesting is that Antony and I once worked together for the same company in what seems like a lifetime ago in a galaxy far, far away. The company had absolutely nothing to do with mysteries or books or sleuthing of any kind, so it's with great pleasure that I note that, though many years have passed, our paths have crossed again.

Back to the book: It is February, 1912 and Sherlock Holmes is called out of retirement by brother Mycroft, acting on behalf of the British Government, to investigate a break-in at the Norfolk home of a wealthy German financier. Holmes is soon at work dismantling a German spy ring, but the investigation becomes clouded by his suspicions concerning Mycroft’s pivotal role in events.

What agenda is Mycroft pursuing? What is the truth behind the loss of the fishing vessels the Misty Jane and the Yarmouth Adventuress in the North Sea? And why is the Royal Navy seemingly operating incognito along the Norfolk coast? Before long a number of disparate events crystallise to reveal a dangerous conspiracy.

As the story unfolds against the background of an International Opium Conference, Holmes and Watson find themselves embroiled in espionage and arms-smuggling in the tense period leading up to the First World War.
