Murder on the Waterfront by Michael Jahn

Murder on the Waterfront by Michael Jahn
Publisher: Michael Jahn

Originally published by Minotaur Books in 2001, this is the 8th mystery in the author's "New York City Mysteries" series with Bill Donovan.

About Murder on the Waterfront (from the publisher): Parties of vastly different orders rage aboard two ships docked side-by-side on Manhattan's legendary West Side waterfront. On the ultramodern, palatial, and pastel cruise liner Trinidad Princess, a conservative candidate for president presides over a posh fundraiser. On the ancient, barnacle-encrusted, and fashionably decadent Sevastopol Trader, the head of an ultra-chic modeling agency holds an all-night soiree of supermodels and who-knows what else to celebrate the launch of her perfume line. When dawn breaks the following day and the body of a top conservative political strategist is found in the litter-strewn hold of the old freighter, N.Y.P.D. Captain Bill Donovan is called in for the investigation.

Helped by his wife, the multiracial firecracker Marcy, and his friend and associate, Brooklyn's massively muscled Brian Moskowitz, Donovan delves into a web of waterfront intrigue that includes national politicians, global environmental activists, top fashion models, menacing harbor water rats, lonely homeless old men, waterfront regulars, and a host of New York eccentrics.

4 Gigs of Trouble by Stella Baker

4 Gigs of Trouble by Stella Baker
Publisher: CreateSpace

About 4 Gigs of Trouble (from the publisher): Toni Teitelbaum is a former US Marine MP, a curvy six-footer with a fondness for designer clothing and handguns. She is also a high school history teacher, supervising a class visit to Washington. When a student bolts off the path near the Lincoln Memorial, Toni chases him into the foliage, where she finds more than her wayward student. A man has been shot, left for dead in the bushes. He appears homeless and drunk, jabbers craziness and dies in her arms. The police say it is typical street violence. Toni knows better.

Crime scene details don’t add up and when she begins receiving threats, Toni knows someone wants her to shut up. The teacher she has become wants to skedaddle back to the safety of her Marin classroom. The cop she used to be won’t let her. Before he died, the man in her arms hid a 4 gig flash drive in her jacket. Once Toni discovers what’s on it, there’s no turning back.

New Poster for Easy Money

Easy Money (2012; Snabba Cash 2010)

A new poster for the film Easy Money has been released (right; click for larger image).

Originally released in Sweden in 2010 as Snabba Cash, the film stars Joel Kinnaman as lower class business student JW, who falls in love with a sexy heiress while living a double life mingling with Stockholm's wealthy elite. To keep up the façade of his lifestyle, he's lured into a world of crime. Jorge (Matias Padin Varela) is a petty fugitive on the run from both the police and Serbian mafia. He hopes that brokering a massive cocaine deal will allow him to escape for good. Mafia enforcer Mrado (Dragomir Mrsic) is on the hunt for Jorge, but his efforts are complicated when he's unexpectedly saddled with caring for his young daughter. As JW's journey ventures deeper into the dark world of organized crime, the fate of all three men becomes entangled and ends with a dramatic struggle for life and death.

Easy Money is adapted from the 2006 crime novel Snabba Cash — an English-language translation of which was published this year as Easy Money — by Jens Lapidus. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the film opens in limited release on July 27th, 2012. Snabba Cash II has already been released in Sweden, and is based on the second book in the crime trilogy.

New Poster for Alex Cross

Alex Cross (2012)

A new poster for the film Alex Cross has been released by the studio (right; click for larger image). We like the poster quite a bit; we hate the tagline: "Don't ever cross Alex Cross."

Not directly adapted from any of the James Patterson "Alex Cross" mysteries, it is a semi-original screenplay that incorporates plot elements from at least two of the novels that feature the character.

Here's a fairly old synopsis from the studio, back when it was titled I, Alex Cross, though it should still be applicable: Crusading detective/psychologist Alex Cross (Tyler Perry) meets his match against the psychotic, mob hit man, Michael Sullivan, aka The Butcher. As Cross investigates the hit man's gruesome murders, Sullivan decides to send him a deadly message by murdering his wife in cold blood. Now enraged, Cross vows to hunt down the killer if it's the last thing he does. However, Sullivan is a serial killing mastermind and continues to evade Cross while pushing him to an ethical breaking point as a cop and father. As Cross closes in on the killer, he discovers evidence that points to the unimaginable — a revelation that could change everything.

Directed by Rob Cohen from a screenplay by Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson, Alex Cross opens in theaters October 19th, 2012.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120623)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

As we mentioned last Saturday, this update is coming out two days late because so many titles that were part of Amazon's most recent The Big Deal sale were included here. Indeed, 37 books came off the list. We were able to find 29 new ones to add, and to bring the total back to 100 we re-added the eight M. C. Beaton "Hamish Macbeth" mysteries, which fell off the list a few weeks ago.

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

There's not much in the way of individual publisher news, so we'll get right to the new $2.99 or less titles we added today; click on the cover or title to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.

Adapted from the popular "Stephanie Plum" mysteries by Janet Evanovich, this film is a prime example of why so many viewers believe they could make movies better than the so-called — or self-proclaimed — professionals. Or maybe it really does take talent to make a film this bad.

Savages Interrogation Videos, Week Three

Savages, adapted from the crime novel by Don Winslow (2012)

With less then two weeks to go before Savages opens in theaters, the studio has released its third week of "interrogation videos".

Rather than post them individually here, we're providing a link to the Savages Movie YouTube Channel, where you can watch them all — 15 to date — if you're so inclined. (We thought this was a clever marketing idea at first, but the concept seems to be quickly wearing thin.)

Savages is adapted from the crime thriller of the same title by Don Winslow and is directed by Oliver Stone from a screenplay co-written with Winslow and Shane Salerno. It opens in theaters July 6th.

The Screwball King Murder by Kin Platt

The Screwball King Murder by Kin Platt
Publisher: Prologue Books

About The Screwball King Murder (from the publisher): Big, brash, good-looking Hondo Kenyon is one of the Los Angeles Dodgers' best pitchers, a southpaw screwballer with the necessary skills and fastball to keep the opposition from tearing his head off, and the team is counting on the ex-small town Pennsylvania boy for help in their pennant run. On the other hand, Kenyon rates as a screwball in more ways than one. He has a long track record as a scoring jock with the ladies and his antics on or off the field are flamboyant and daffy, executed with lunatic fervor, sometimes funny of bordering on the ludicrous, always certain of coverage by the media.

With a reputation like that, it's no big surprise to a lot of people when Hondo turns up dead in the electrically charged water of a condominium swimming pool. Slip Masters, the team's public relations man, calls on his private investigator friend Max Roper to look into the case and find out for sure whether it was a legit accident or perhaps a crafty and ingenious murder. The Los Angeles cops have crossed off Hondo's death as a weird accident, but Slip isn't so sure. Neither is Max Roper, especially when he gets in closer and starts kicking things around and his investigations turn up some odd circumstances and a string of other murders. As Detective Lieutenant Camino of Homicide says, “On a Roper case they die on the hour, like flies. Death follows Max like a plague."

Roper has plenty of leads to follow: disgruntled ballplayers, jealous boyfriends, discarded lovers, the dead man's new-breed agent, a psychiatrist, a pool-maintenance person, a hippie plastic surgeon, condominium neighbors, some gangland types, a rock musician and a pineapple heiress ex-wife, among others. His travels take him from the baseball locker room to the seedy areas of Venice, a factory turned nightclub, exclusive watering holes, a chic tennis club, a new high-rise office complex—in short, a cross section of Los Angeles. Along the way to solving the case, Roper get shot at, arrested, beaten up, held at gunpoint and hit over the head, not necessarily in that order.
