The Man with No Time by Timothy Hallinan
A Simeon Grist Mystery
Publisher: Hallinan Consulting

This is the fifth mystery (of six) in this series featuring the Los Angeles private investigator.

About The Man with No Time (from the publisher): Simeon Grist does a favor for the family of his sometimes-girlfriend, Eleanor Chan, and goes looking for two children who vanished in Chinatown. He quickly learns that he's gone straight through the looking glass and into a world where grieving parents are afraid to contact the police, where fear is the teacher and power is the law, where helpless people are shipped from China to America like so many pairs of shoes and forced into lives of toil and submission. He's perilously out of his element, drawn into a back-alley nightmare of tong wars, slavery, and murder — forced to play by rules he doesn't understand for the highest stakes of all.

Mission to Paris by Alan Furst

New at number 9 is the spy thriller Mission to Paris by Alan Furst.

It is the late summer of 1938, Europe is about to explode, the Hollywood film star Fredric Stahl is on his way to Paris to make a movie for Paramount France. The Nazis know he's coming — a secret bureau within the Reich Foreign Ministry has for years been waging political warfare against France, using bribery, intimidation, and corrupt newspapers to weaken French morale and degrade France's will to defend herself.

For their purposes, Fredric Stahl is a perfect agent of influence, and they attack him. What they don't know is that Stahl, horrified by the Nazi war on Jews and intellectuals, has become part of an informal spy service being run out of the American embassy in Paris.

The Third Gate by Lincoln Child

One spot lower is the first in a new series, The Third Gate by Lincoln Child.

Under the direction of famed explorer Porter Stone, an archaeological team is secretly attempting to locate the tomb of an ancient pharaoh who was unlike any other in history. Stone believes he has found the burial chamber of King Narmer, the near mythical god- king who united upper and lower Egypt in 3200 B.C., and the archaeologist has reason to believe that the greatest prize of all — Narmer's crown — might be buried with him. No crown of an Egyptian king has ever been discovered, and Narmer's is the elusive “double” crown of the two Egypts, supposedly possessed of awesome powers.

The dig itself is located in one of the most forbidding places on earth — the Sudd, a nearly impassable swamp in northern Sudan. Amid the nightmarish, disorienting tangle of mud and dead vegetation, a series of harrowing and inexplicable occurrences are causing people on the expedition to fear a centuries-old curse. With a monumental discovery in reach, Professor Jeremy Logan is brought onto the project to investigate. What he finds will raise new questions … and alarm.

XO by Jeffery Deaver

The third newcomer to the list at number 12 is XO, the third Kathryn Dance mystery by Jeffery Deaver.

Country-pop ingénue Kayleigh Towne's career is just reaching new heights with her huge hit single "Your Shadow" — but increased fame is also bringing unwanted attention. An innocent exchange with one of her fans, signed with an "XO", leads Kayleigh into the dangerous and terrifying realm of obsession.
Edwin Sharp thinks Kayleigh's songs contain messages that speak directly to him. Despite her clear rejection and threats from lawyers and law enforcers, he remains convinced that "Your Shadow" was written just for him, and he announces he's coming for Kayleigh. Then a potentially fatal accident occurs at the concert hall where Kayleigh is rehearsing for a triumphant hometown performance, and she is convinced that someone — maybe Edwin — was there watching her from the darkness.

True to his word, Edwin Sharp soon makes an ominous appearance in town, and California Bureau of Investigation Agent Kathryn Dance, a friend and fan of Kayleigh's on vacation in Fresno to attend the show, intervenes on her behalf, drawing Sharp's frightening attention to herself. That night a member of the road crew whom Kayleigh had once dated is murdered in an eerie echo of an image from her chart-topping song. As more deaths loom on the horizon, Kathryn Dance must use her considerable skills at investigation and body-language analysis to stop the stalker and save more innocent victims. But before long she learns that, like many celebrities, Kayleigh has more than one fan with a mission …

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton Optioned for Film

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton

Steve Hamilton's 2011 Edgar Award-winning Best Novel The Lock Artist has been optioned for film by Shane Salerno, who co-wrote the screenplay adaptation of Don Winslow's Savages. Salerno is expected to co-write the adapted screenplay with Hamilton.

Marked by tragedy, traumatized at the age of eight, Michael, now eighteen, is no ordinary young man. Besides not uttering a single word in ten years, he discovers the one thing he can somehow do better than anyone else. Whether it's a locked door without a key, a padlock with no combination, or even an eight-hundred pound safe ... he can open them all.

It's an unforgivable talent. A talent that will make young Michael a hot commodity with the wrong people and, whether he likes it or not, push him ever close to a life of crime. Until he finally sees his chance to escape, and with one desperate gamble risks everything to come back home to the only person he ever loved, and to unlock the secret that has kept him silent for so long.

The Lock Artist — the Kindle edition is, as of the date and time of this post, priced at just $2.99 by its publisher, Minotaur Books — is Hamilton's second stand-alone novel; he is also the author of the Alex McKnight mystery series, the first entry of which also recognized with an Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Copper Producers Discuss Making the BBC America Crime Drama

Copper (BBC America, August 2012)

Executive producers Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana talk about the making of the new BBC America original series Copper in a new video uploaded by the network (and embedded below). The historical crime drama is set in 1860s Manhattan.

"I think the idea of doing a period piece is really exciting because you're now looking at New York City 140 some-odd years ago," says Levinson. "It was a messy, confusing time."

Tom Weston-Jones stars as Kevin Corcoran, an intense, rugged Irish-immigrant cop working the city's notorious Five Points neighborhood. Corcoran is struggling to maintain his moral compass in a turbulent post-Civil War world while on an emotional and relentless quest to learn the truth about the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter.

Copper premieres on BBC America on August 19th, 2012.
