In Her Sights by Robin Perini
Publisher: Montlake Romance

About In Her Sights (from the publisher): SWAT Team Sniper Jasmine "Jazz" Parker can thread the eye of a needle with a bullet. As the only female sniper in the state of Colorado, Jazz is unique for more than her extraordinary marksmanship skills and cool head. Jazz Parker and her weapon defend the helpless by exacting swift and uncompromising justice. Not bad for the daughter of the town whore.

After growing up on the seedy side of town, Jazz believed when she'd changed her name and her life at fifteen, she'd buried her past. Two years ago, she even drove away the one man she believed she could love—ex-Army Ranger turned reporter Luke Montgomery—to protect her secret.

Then, in a fleeting second, the time it takes for one clean shot, one perfect hit, to save the life of the Governor's daughter, Jazz's world begins to crumble around her. Her past and her present now threaten to destroy the life she has carefully constructed for herself. Her face and name have been splashed across the front page—by none other than Luke Montgomery—and her past has reawakened with a vengeance. A vicious enemy is bent on destroying Jazz's life, forcing her to turn to the one man she can never have in order to stop a killer before she and everyone she cares about pay with their lives.

Third Game of Thrones Fan Poster for Season Two

Game of Thrones Season Two

HBO has released a third "fan poster" for the second season of Game of Thrones (right; click for larger version). We believe it is meant to depict House Targaryen, or more specifically Daenerys Targaryen, "Mother of Dragons", the last member of the dynasty. The poster's tagline: "I will take what is mine."

See also our posts on the first fan poster ("The North Remembers") and the second fan poster ("The King can do as he likes").

Game of Thrones, adapted from the series of "A Song of Ice and Fire" epic fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, returns on April 1st, 2012.

New Character Posters for Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows (2012)

Last week we featured a new poster and yesterday the first trailer for the film Dark Shadows; today nine character posters have been released (right and below; click for larger versions). Each has the tagline "Strange is relative."

In the film, directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by Seth Graham-Smith, the year is 1752. Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family.

Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy … until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon her live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath).

The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) and David's new nanny Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote).

Dark Shadows opens in theaters May 11th, 2012.

OMN Welcomes Crime Novelist Steve Brewer

Omnimystery News: Authors on Tour

Omnimystery News is pleased to welcome crime novelist Steve Brewer, author of the Bubba Mabry mysteries. The most recent in the series is Party Doll (February 2012 eBook).

Today Steve talks about taking story ideas right from the headlines.

— ◊ —

Where do writers get their ideas? In New Mexico, it's as easy as picking up a newspaper.

An example: In a little border town called Sunland Park, a city councilman recently was charged with an assortment of crimes related to a lap dance.

Steve Brewer

The councilman, Daniel Salinas, was running for mayor. He allegedly acquired video of his opponent enjoying a lap dance from a topless woman, then threatened to expose it unless the opponent dropped out of the race.

The opponent refused. The video went public. And Salinas was arrested and charged with extortion and other crimes. So far, seven other current or former city employees also have been charged with various crimes related to the case.

Wait, it gets better. The town went ahead with its election anyway. And Salinas won! Unfortunately for him, one of the conditions of his current release-on-bail is that he can't enter City Hall, so he hasn't been sworn in as mayor. Yet.

Ah, it's good to be back in New Mexico. Land of spicy green chile, beautiful sunsets and dirty politics.

My wife and I moved back to the Land of Enchantment in October after nearly nine years in California (which has its own political problems, but never mind). Since then, I've watched in amusement as one corruption case after another has darkened the headlines.

Naturally, political corruption found its way into my fiction as well. My latest story, a novella called Party Doll, features a cabal of strip-club operators who conspire with crooked politicians to turn the state fairgrounds into a legal red-light district, complete with gambling and prostitution.

In Party Doll, bumbling private eye Bubba Mabry is hired to locate a missing stripper who goes by the stage name Joy Forever. Before long, it becomes clear that Joy has information about the fairgrounds scheme and she's feeding it to the feds.

This is the ninth outing for Bubba, who starred in my first published novel, Lonely Street, which came out in 1994. I've written a lot of standalone crime novels since then, but I come back to Bubba ever so often. He's a fun character to write, and there's never any shortage of material in New Mexico.

I don't plan to use lap-dance extortion in a novel (who would believe it?), but you're welcome to it. You can read more about the Sunland Park case on NMPolitics.net.

Steve Brewer is the author of over 20 books about crooks. His first Bubby Mabry mystery, Lonely Street, was adapted into the 2009 film of the same title starring Jay Mohr as the Albuquerque PI. A former journalist and syndicated humor columnist, Brewer now works as a writing coach and University of New Mexico lecturer. A frequent speaker at mystery conventions, he was toastmaster at Left Coast Crime in 2011.

Party Doll by Steve Brewer

About Party Doll:

Bubba bumbles back into action when he's hired to find a missing stripper who goes by the stage name Joy Forever. Joy's boss says business has been off since she disappeared, owing him money. He wants Bubba to find Joy and find her fast.

But there's more here than meets the eye. A federal prosecutor is interested in Joy as well, and Bubba's wife, newspaper reporter Felicia Quattlebaum, is working on a crusade that seems to be entangled with the case.
