Morgue Drawer Four by Jutta Profijt
A Martin Gänsewein Mystery
Publisher: AmazonCrossing

Originally published in Germany in 2009 under the title Kühlfach 4, this mystery introduces Cologne (Köln) coroner Dr. Martin Gänsewein.

About Morgue Drawer Four (from the publisher): Coroner is the perfect job for Dr. Martin Gänsewein, who spends his days in peace and quiet autopsying dead bodies for the city of Cologne. Shy, but scrupulous, Martin appreciates his taciturn clients—until the day one of them starts talking to him. It seems the ghost of a recently deceased (and surprisingly chatty) small-time car thief named Pascha is lingering near his lifeless body in drawer number four of Martin’s morgue. He remains for one reason: his “accidental” death was, in fact, murder.

Pascha is furious his case will go unsolved—to say nothing of his body’s dissection upon Martin’s autopsy table. But since Martin is the only person Pascha can communicate with, the ghost settles in with the good pathologist, determined to bring the truth of his death to light.

Now Martin’s staid life is rudely upended as he finds himself navigating Cologne’s red-light district and the dark world of German car smuggling. Unless Pascha can come up with a plan—and fast—Martin will soon be joining him in the spirit world.

IDW Announces Publication Date of Third Parker Graphic Novel, The Score

The Score by Darwyn Cooke (IDW)

What kind of man tries to knock off a whole town? Parker, of course.

Earlier this month IDW Publishing's editor-in-chief Chris Ryall announced that the third volume in Darwyn Cooke's "Parker" graphic novels would be published this May. He also posted this image (right; click for larger version).

Based on a character created by Richard Stark — a pseudonym used by Donald E. Westlake — The Score is the third book in this graphic novel series by Darwyn Cooke, following 2009's The Hunter and 2010's The Outfit.

Parker is a professional thief. He appeared in over 20 books by Stark/Westlake, several of which — most notably The Hunter, which also served as the basis for the first graphic novel in this series — were made into films.

Though we know nothing about the storyline in The Score other than what's depicted in the image above, we expect it will include elements of the plot in the 1964 novel of the same title.

Though the overall plot will likely offer few surprises to the viewer — it is not unlike a fictional film based on a historical event; you know how it ends but the journey is still worth taking — there is plenty of suspense to keep one interested. Also contributing to my admiration of the film are the uniformly outstanding performances by the principals of the cast.

Telemystery: Alcatraz Premieres Monday, January 16th on Fox

Alcatraz (Fox)

The mystery/thriller television drama Alcatraz premieres tomorrow, Monday January 16th at 8 PM (ET/PT) on Fox.

The series stars Sarah Jones as SFPD detective Rebecca Madsen, and in the 2-hour pilot is assigned to a grisly homicide case. A fingerprint found at the scene leads her to a seemingly impossible suspect: Jack Sylvane, an inmate at Alcatraz, who died over 30 years ago. Her interest piqued, she begins an investigation, only to have an enigmatic government agent, Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), impede her every step of the way.

She soon finds herself working with an unlikely partner, Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast Diego "Doc" Soto (Jorge Garcia). Together they uncover what seems to be impossible: Sylvane is not only alive, but he's loose on the streets of San Francisco, exacting decades-old revenge and leaving bodies in his wake.

As they work to stop Sylvane's killing spree, they discover that he is only a small part of a much larger, more sinister present-day threat. Because even though he may be the first, it quickly becomes clear that Sylvane won’t be the last to reappear from Alcatraz.

Watch a promo for Doc Soto's book Inmates of Alcatraz and a first look featurette below.
