New Trailer for The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black (2012)

The doorway has opened …

A new, relatively short at just over a minute, trailer has been released by the studio for the upcoming thriller The Woman in Black. We've embedded it below.

Adapted from the 1983 novel of the same title by Susan Hill, the film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps, a solicitor attending to the affairs of the late Mrs. Alice Drablow. But as he begins to dispose of her estate, he uncovers tragic secrets and encounters the ghost of a woman intent on revenge.

Janet McTeer and Ciarán Hinds co-star in this Gothic thriller, which opens in US theaters February 3rd, 2012.

NBC Orders Full Season of Grimm

Grimm (NBC)

NBC has given its new supernatural crime drama Grimm a full season order. It is — to date — the only new hour-long series on the network to receive such an order.

"We are very pleased to be making a full-season commitment for Grimm," said NBC president Robert Greenblatt. "This series is turning the traditional procedural drama on its head and is attracting a loyal following for us on Friday nights. We love where it's going creatively and we're excited to deliver more episodes to our audience."

Inspired by the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales, the series stars David Giuntoli as Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt, who discovers he is descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms", charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world.

Grimm currently airs on Friday nights, but the network has scheduled a Thursday airing for the series on December 8th, in the now-canceled Prime Suspect's time slot.

Millennium Wins 2011 International Emmy for Best TV Mini-Series

International Emmy Awards

The winners of the International Emmy Awards were announced yesterday, and the six-part Swedish made-for-television adaptation of Stieg Larsson's trilogy of Swedish thrillers, Millennium, was honored as Best TV Movie/Mini-Series.

Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace reprise their roles from the Swedish-language film adaptations of the books in this mini-series, which consists of six 90-minute episodes and originally aired during March and April 2010 on SVT1. The storylines from all three books — The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest — were included. At 540 minutes, the mini-series is almost two hours longer than the combined length of the films, with the additional screen time devoted to further developing the characters and plot.

James Dashner to Write Prequel to The Maze Runner Trilogy

Delacorte Press

Delacorte Press announced today that James Dashner will write a prequel to his bestselling "Maze Runner" trilogy of young adult thrillers. Titled The Kill Order, the book will be published on August 14th, 2012.

"The prequel is something that has churned in my mind since before The Maze Runner was even complete," said Dashner. "It's been hard to keep it a secret! I'm excited to finally share the news and I can't wait for my readers to see how it all began."

Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares seared the earth and mankind fell to disease. The Kill Order tells the story of that fall.

The books in the series are The Maze Runner (2009), The Scorch Trials (2010), and The Death Cure (2011). The series has been optioned for film, with Catherine Hardwicke (The Twilight Saga: Twilight) slated to direct a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim.

Martha Grimes to Receive the 2012 MWA Grand Master Award

Mystery Writers of America

The Mystery Writers of America announced today that crime novelist Martha Grimes would honored with the 2012 Grand Master Award. This award represents the pinnacle of achievement in mystery writing and was established to acknowledge important contributions to this genre, as well as a body of work that is both significant and of consistent high quality.

"I was, for once, speechless," said Grimes, when notified of being named Grand Master.

Martha Grimes began as a poet, but then turned to mysteries. She sent her first novel — The Man with a Load of Mischief — "over the transom" to several publishers. In 1979 an editor at Little, Brown found it in the "slush pile" and offered to publish it. The book, which introduced Scotland Yard detective Richard Jury, became the first in a long-running series that currently numbers twenty-two titles.

Also announced today are the recipients of the Ellery Queen Award and the Raven Award.

The 2012 Ellery Queen Award will be given to Joe Meyers of the Connecticut Post/Hearst Media News Group. The Ellery Queen award is given to editors or publishers who have distinguished themselves by their generous and wide-ranging support of the genre.

One mystery bookstore and one outstanding individual supporting the mystery book genre will be honored with the 2012 Raven Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing. M is for Mystery in San Mateo, CA and Molly Weston of Meritorious Mysteries will be honored with the 2012 Raven Awards.

The above awards plus the winners of the Edgar Awards will be presented at The Edgar Awards Banquet, which will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on Thursday, April 26th, 2012.

Martin Scorsese to Direct Film Adaptation of Jo Nesbø's The Snowman

The Snowman by Jo Nesbø

Bestselling Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbø has confirmed that Martin Scorsese will direct the English-language film adaptation of The Snowman. Originally published as Snomannen in 2007, it is the seventh mystery in the Harry Hole series. Matthew Michael Carnahan (State of Play, World War Z) will write the screenplay.

The book is set in Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother's pink scarf.

Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he's received and the disappearance of Jonas's mother — and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn in an increasingly terrifying game whose rules are devised — and constantly revised — by the killer.

A Sami Rizzo Mystery
Thomas & Mercer

This is the second mystery in this series to feature the San Diego homicide detective.

About Resuscitation (from the publisher): Two years ago, Sami Rizzo narrowly escaped a brush with death at the hands of a serial killer. After apprehending the killer and bringing him to justice, this life-changing event compels her to resign from the police force. In her heart of hearts, however, she struggles with the decision. But a second serial killer — a well-respected doctor gone astray — uses his charm to seduce his victims and then performs horrific surgical experiments on them. In a final act of depravity, he scatters their mutilated bodies throughout San Diego County.

Feeling a sense of duty and obligation, Sami Rizzo appeals to the police chief and mayor, and they reinstate her as a homicide investigator. As the body count grows and the killer’s experiments become more and more brutal, Sami follows one dead-end lead after another, while trying to deal with a sickly mother and a turbulent relationship with her lover. But then the killer makes a crucial mistake: one of his victims survives. Sami does everything to protect the barely alive victim, but the killer has a different plan …
