Review written by Kevin, a 6th grade student. Date of review: January 2010.

Review: If you like an intriguing story, try reading Death and the Arrow by Chris Priestley and the first in its series. The book combines all of the features of an action book such as the Alex Rider series with a Sherlock Holmes type mystery. I am not a big fan of mystery books but this book held my interest because I did not know whether mystery or action was about to happen.

There has been another death and again, the murder victim has a death and arrow card in their pocket. This time the victim is one of London’s most notorious pickpockets named Will Piggot. Almost everybody in London is glad Will Piggot is dead. That is everybody except Tom Marlow, the apprentice news printer, and Dr. Harker, one of the town’s medical doctors. They were both friends of Will. In this story, they work together to find clues to solve Will’s murder. When Tom and Dr. Harker start finding out more about Will’s death, they become targets for death from the group of people who are involved with the death and the arrow cards. These friends of Will have to fight against this tribe to get information out of them regarding Will’s death. Read the story to find out if Will Piggot’s murderer will be brought to justice, or will Will’s murderer keep his reign of terror going.

Overall, I would recommend this book. The author did a good job describing the characters and the setting of the story. Like when the author said “only people that had stains of gold on their shirt came to the funeral. In particular one man had a dark green jacket stained gold pants and about 33 gold chains on his neck.” One of the things I did not like about the book was there were some details about characters that I did not feel were important to the story. Also, I felt that the beginning of most chapters built up too much suspense and it took too long for the action part of the story to occur.

This book deserves a four out of a five star rating because it has all the parts of a mystery along with action. I would recommend this book to people in fourth grade and older because it may have some challenging words younger age groups might not understand. There are two more books in the series and I am looking forward to reading them.

Review: Sue Ann Jaffarian introduces soon-to-be-divorced Emma Whitecastle investigating a murder within her own family ... albeit from over 100 years ago ... and with a little help from an unexpected source ... in Ghost a la Mode.

"Would you believe our family tree harbors a murderer," Emma's mom says. "A woman who killed her husband. She was then promptly hung." The woman was Ish Reynolds, Emma's great-great-great-grandmother, who lived in the mountain town of Julian, northeast of San Diego. Julian, a former gold rush town, was always known for its apples, and Ish, famous for her apple pies, was affectionately called by all who knew her Granny Apples. But when her husband is shot and killed after claiming to find gold on their property, it was believed she had done the deed and she was hung in return. "Someone shot my man, Jacob, and hung me," Ish's ghost tells a very skeptical Emma. "I want to know who and why."

It would seem that the mystery genre hardly needs another ghost-from-the-past / person-in-the-present amateur sleuthing team, but Jaffarian elevates Ghost a la Mode above many of its peers by creating characters that are a little more sharply drawn, a little edgier, a little more, if you will, real. Still, the author's writing style seems to invite apparitional comparisons, breezy and animated yet subtle and nuanced. It's an interesting contrast between how the characters are defined (or maybe perceived is a better word to use here) and the narrative in which they develop. The storyline, to be sure, is hardly unique, nor is the predictable outcome, but that really isn't the point here; rather, it's a vehicle -- and an engaging one, at that -- in which to introduce Emma Whitecastle and the ghost of Granny Apples.

Initial doubts firmly vanquished, Ghost a la Mode is a strong introduction in what promises to be a delightfully (forgive the pun) spirited series.

Special thanks to Midnight Ink for providing a copy of Ghost a la Mode for this review.

Mystery Book Review: The Ranks of Jody Brae by Jonathan Michael Cullen

Review: Jonathan Michael Cullen's debut novel, The Ranks of Jody Brae, introduces a police detective torn between his past and the present, a darkly written story set during a turbulent time in 1960s Boston.

Jody Brae is a detective with the Internal Affairs Division of the Boston Police Department. A loner, subject to frighteningly vivid nightmares, he lives in the suburb of Roxbury, where old, dilapidated buildings seem to be going up in flames at an alarming rate. The largely poor and non-white neighborhood isn't given much attention in the news, or by the police and fire departments. Brae and his new partner, Harrigan, a Nation of Islam black man from the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, are assigned to investigate. Being members of IAD, they aren't trusted by their fellow cops, relying instead on an informal network of informants. When a building adjacent to a mosque burns, a member contacts Harrigan with information about the fire, asking to meet him in the basement of the mosque. Instead, Harrigan is brutally beaten. Regaining consciousness in the hospital, he slips a note to Brae: "They are involved. I heard everything. Don't trust anyone." Brae is abruptly removed from the case, but can't forget the visions of children forced to leave their homes as a result of the fires. He makes every effort to find who's setting the fires, even if it means risking his own life in the process.

The Ranks of Jody Brae doesn't read as a typical crime novel, at times leaning more towards literary fiction rather than genre fiction. That's not necessarily bad or wrong, but those readers seeking an entertaining, plot-driven mystery will not find it here. It is much more of a character study, specifically a single character study, told from the perspective of Jody Brae, whose psychological problems no doubt are intended to contrast (or maybe complement) the social issues of the day. But his portrayal is more depressing than enlightening, his attitude more negative than positive, and despite his seemingly sincere dedication to his community, he is really a hard character to like. Possibly had the book been written in third person, he might have come across differently, identifying less with the reader. As such, if one can come to terms with the character, what follows will likely be satisfactory, enjoyable even. Otherwise, it's a tough book to appreciate.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of The Ranks of Jody Brae and to Jonathan Michael Cullen for providing an ARC of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Boston 1964: Fires rage throughout Roxbury, a vast urban slum, destroying buildings and leaving families homeless. The local press, politicians and civic leaders have all ignored the rash of fires, probably because the Arson Squad has determined every incident to be accidental. But, as the fires become a nightly affair, police reports and building records go missing and fear becomes a regular companion for the residents of Roxbury.

What begins as a routine investigation turns into a nightmare of survival for Jody Brae, a Boston cop who grew up in an orphanage in the neighborhood. As Roxbury burns, he wanders the back alleyways of the city alone, determined to uncover the secret of the fires. Abandoned by his own police department and questioned by the woman he loves, Brae's search leads him to an aging underworld figure who knows as much about the fires as he does about Brae's own troubled past. With no one left to trust, Brae makes a pact he may not live to regret.
