Surveillance expert Seth Mackey knows everything about the women that his millionaire boss toys with — and tosses aside. Raine Cameron is something different. Night after night, Seth watches her on a dozen different video screens. Her vulnerable beauty haunts him and her fresh innocence stirs a white-hot passion that he can barely control. Raine is pure temptation, but Seth has something more important to take care of first. He's convinced that his boss, Victor Lazar, is responsible for his half-brother's murder. He cannot put his secret investigation at risk, but he can't stop wanting her — craving her — and soon he knows he can't let Victor have her. For Raine may be Victor's next victim …

Raine knows she's being watched — but no one can see the secrets in her heart. She has reasons of her own to seek revenge on Victor Lazar, and she will, despite her fear — and the distracting presence of Seth Mackey. Though Raine has little experience with men, Seth's fiercely masculine good looks and animal sensuality stir her most erotic fantasies when she's along … and lead her to a bold plan. Offering her body to him, surrendering totally to his ruthless desire might well push her beyond all emotional limits — and beyond fear itself.

Review: War Hawk by James Rollins and Grant Blackwood

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of War Hawk by James Rollins and Grant Blackwood. A Tucker Wayne Thriller.

Review summary: Though this is clearly an action-centered novel of the first order, it is also a strongly character-driven one. The storyline is complex, maybe a little too much so in places, but is still relatively straightforward to follow. Overall, a good, solid suspense thriller that will have readers looking forward to the series lead and his K-9 unit's next adventure. (Click here for text of full review.)

In a flush of family feeling, Ellie Haskell decides to host an anniversary dinner party for her husband Ben's parents, Magdalene and Elijah. She has only the best of intentions in inviting a friend Magdalene hasn't seen in forty years. Beatrix Taffer is a seventy-year-old flower child — a vegetarian who doesn't like vegetables. And Magdalene certainly does not like the attention Elijah pays her ex-best friend throughout the evening.

Ellie is not surprised when dinner, along with the chocolate mousse, falls flat, but neither she nor Ben is prepared for the revelation of a dark and terrible secret and the monumental row that ensues. At evening's end Ellie is left with more than a sink full of dirty dishes. Elijah has moved out to seek lodging elsewhere and Magdalene has taken up residence in her dear son's home.

Nothing like a live-in mother-in-law to reduce a woman to the role of junior housemaid. Confronted with demands that Tobias, the cat, be put to sleep and Mrs. Malloy, the daily help, be given notice, Ellie discovers that misery does indeed love company. At the Dark Horse pub she meets up with three other wives, including the female vicar of St. Anselm's Church, all of whom suffer from the age-old mother-in-law curse. The ladies mix gin and tonics with homicidal fantasies — a soupcon of poison here, a broken brake line there.

All very therapeutic and no harm intended, Ellie doesn't have the time to rendezvous with Ben in the bedroom, let alone bump off his mother. But it soon becomes murderously clear that someone is only too happy to give her and the co-conspirators a hand. When one mother-in-law lands in the morgue and another is scheduled to end up on ice, Ellie realizes that she may have more to answer for than a chocolate mousse that failed to rise to the occasion.

Whacked with a lawn flamingo? A reporter wants to know — who killed with kitsch …

The rehabilitation of North Dakota Place is a feel-good story — the kind St. Louis City Gazette columnist Francesca Vierling likes to write. Grand houses restored to former glory. Pride in a neighborhood — and, like all good stories, this one has a hero, the woman who made it all happen, the city's guardian of good taste. Some call her a rehabbing saint, others a fanatic.

The first death on North Dakota Place was certainly shocking but not entirely unwelcome — after all, the victim was a cranky old man who had been painting his house purple. The second death, of a drug dealer, brings tacit approval — and growing suspicion. But all bets are off when another victim is found, a socialite unceremoniously whacked with a pink lawn flamingo. Now the neighbors want Francesca to investigate. But her boyfriend wants her to commit to marriage, not crime. Soon the gutsy reporter is experiencing a deepening personal crisis — and something more heinous than vinyl siding: the dark secrets of heart, home, and blighted dreams.

Since becoming an unlikely millionaire and quitting the St. Paul Police Department, Rushmore McKenzie has been working as an unlicensed private investigator, basically doing favors for friends and people in need. But even for him, this latest job is unusual. He's been asked to find a stolen Stradivarius, known as the Countess Borromeo, that only the violinist seems to want him to find.

Stolen from a locked room in a B&B in the violinist's former hometown of Bayfield, Wisconsin, the violin is valued at $4 million and is virtually irreplaceable. But the foundation that owns it and their insurance company refuses to think about buying it back from the thief (or thieves.) However, Paul Duclos, the violinist who has played it for the past twelve years, is desperate to get it back and will pay out of his own pocket to get it back.

Though it's not his usual sort of case, McKenzie is intrigued and decides to try and help, which means going against the local police, the insurance company, the FBI's Art Crime division, and his own lawyer's advice. And, as he quickly learns, there's a lot more going on than the mere theft of a priceless instrument.
