Claire Weatherly and Detective Jakob Fisher must put on their thinking kapps to solve a string of robberies and a murder in the Amish community …

When an Amish farmer is found dead in his barn, his family accepts his death as God's will. But Detective Jakob Fisher knows the farmer didn't hit himself in the head with the shovel lying beside his body. And when it comes to light that a stranger appeared at the farmer's home and now money is missing from their milk can, Fisher suspects robbery as the motive — especially when another Amish family is victimized.

Getting to the truth proves difficult, however, since Fisher has two strikes against him in the eyes of the Amish — his chosen career, and the Amish roots he left behind. Desperate to stop a murderous thief, Fisher turns to Heavenly Treasures shop owner Claire Weatherly for help. The trust she's earned from the Amish community enables her to go where the detective cannot — straight into the path of a killer …

In an intellectual hamlet, century-old love letters give rise to murder …

The citizens of Concord, Massachusetts, never tire of their heritage. For decades, the intellectuals of this little hamlet have continued endless debates about Concord's favorite sons: Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, and their contemporaries. Concord's latter-day transcendental scholars are a strange bunch, but none is more peculiar than Homer Kelly, an expert on Emerson and on homicide. An old-fashioned murder is about to put both skills to the test.

At a meeting of the town's intellectuals, Ernest Goss produces a cache of saucy love letters written by the men and women of the transcendentalist sect. Although Homer chortles at the idea that Louisa May Alcott and Ralph Waldo Emerson might have had a fling, Goss insists the letters are real. He never gets a chance to prove it. Soon after he is found killed by a musket ball. The past may not be dead, but Goss certainly is.

With her books sporting other people's names, ghostwriter Jake O'Hara works behind the scenes. But she never expected a séance at a New York apartment to be part of her job. Jake had signed on as a ghostwriter, secretly writing for a grande dame of mystery fiction whose talent died before she did. The author's East Side residence was impressive. But her entourage — from a Mrs. Danvers-like housekeeper to a lurking hypnotherapist — was creepy.

Still, it was all in a day's work, until a killer started going after ghostwriters, and Jake suspected she was chillingly close to the culprit. Attending a séance and asking the dead for spiritual help was one option. Some brilliant sleuthing was another-before Jake's next deadline turns out to be her own funeral.

A Conversation with Novelist Richard Edde

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Richard Edde

We are delighted to welcome author Richard Edde to Omnimystery News today.

Richard's new novel of suspense is Yeti (Black Opal Books; December 2015 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we recently had the opportunity to spend some time with him talking about it.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: How would you characterize your new book, Yeti?

Richard Edde
Photo provided courtesy of
Richard Edde

Richard Edde: Yeti is difficult to pigeonhole as to category. It's definitely an action thriller with a scientific bent. The protagonist, Harry Olson, is a paleoanthropologist searching for early human fossils in the remote mountains of Mongolia. His assistant, Dixie, is a graduate student. But Harry has problems. Early in his career he did something unethical and he hopes a discovery will reclaim a career he thought was finished. Julius Kesler is Harry's boss and supervisor of the expedition. He helped Harry salvage his career when Harry made his big mistake. I like having a broken hero. It makes for a richer, more human story.

OMN: Is this a stand-alone novel?

RE: Actually, Yeti, is the first of a three-book series. It happened quite by accident. After writing the first book, I fell in love with the characters and as I was playing the what if game in my mind, it just naturally fell that the story wasn't quite finished. Fortunately, the way Yeti ended, I was able to pick up the story for the next installment.

OMN: How much of your own personal or professional experience have you included in the book?

RE: I spent a good part of my professional career in academic medicine. I drew on those experiences to formulate some of the sub-plots and dialogue. Being familiar with the pressures of the academic professor to make discoveries and publish in professional journals made it easier. I used this experience to weave an atmosphere that I hope was successful.

OMN: Tell us a little more about your writing process.

RE: I am pretty much a free flow writer. I do not begin with an outline although I have a vague idea of the overall story I want to tell and who the main characters are going to be. But this can certainly change as I write. Now and then I have to outline a certain subplot action sequence or the like to see if it makes sense but usually I let the characters take me where they will within the confines of my original story. Its quite exciting, actually, especially when one of your characters does something you didn't expect! I know a lot of writers would cringe at this approach but it seems to work for me.

OMN: How true are you to the setting of the story?

RE: Yeti is set in a real place, the Altai Mountains of Mongolia. I have tried to remain true to the geography, landscape, culture, and people of the region. Actually, it's simpler than trying to make it all up. But I have always enjoyed faraway places and my books usually take place in an uncommon or unfamiliar locale. It's just something I enjoy researching and writing about.

OMN: What is the best advice you've received as an author?

RE: Just write and keep writing. In writing that first draft, don't worry too much about it, just get it all down on paper. Once you do that you can go back and revise. Writing is like any other skill — you get better the more you do.

OMN: What's next for you?

RE: I have a book coming out this summer about an American teacher caught up in the contra wars in Nicaragua. It's titled Blood of Brothers. After that, the next two Yeti books will be published. Currently, I am writing a suspense thriller about a nuclear power plant.

Sylvia Thorn, circuit court judge in Palm Beach County, Florida, takes an unexpected trip to Sangamon City, Illinois, when her older brother, Willie Grisseljon, is confined to a county hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. A Vietnam veteran with a few lingering side effects from the war, Willie was on vacation, exploring the countryside where he and Sylvia had grown up. There he found a body, and when he tried to report his discovery to a deputy sheriff, he was locked up as a vagrant with delusions.

Willie is released from the hospital when Sylvia arrives. She is reluctantly drawn into the mystery when Willie insists on revisiting the site where the body is hidden. When the two also discover a local businessman is missing, they make the connection and notify the sheriff.

Soon, the two discover clues about the murdered farm manager and his wife, a tenant farmer, concealed Indian artifacts, and uprooted prairie grass plots that may help the sheriff solve the crime. But Sylvia runs into trouble when she's caught nosing around the old homestead. She hides, but overhears a second murder take place.

She escapes one gun-toting suspect, only to join up with Willie and confront another. Relieved when the sheriff releases them to return to Florida, Sylvia doesn't realize at first that she and her brother are still in danger. A mysterious new neighbor with a menacing bodyguard, and new information Sylvia finds in her legal system database, provide her with the incentive to pursue a search for the truth. Sylvia must use her contacts with the Illinois sheriff and Florida security personnel, as well as Willie's intuitive skills, to remove the threat to herself and her family and provide the missing links to state and federal authorities.

Review: Condor in the Stacks by James Grady

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Condor in the Stacks by James Grady. A Bibliomystery Short Story.

Review summary: This is a decidedly odd story, not a bad one but definitely a strange one in which it is never certain what is real and what isn't. The resolution to the mystery pondered by the lead character is equally uncertain, and veers into action/thriller territory, with what can only be described as a most bizarre ending. Publisher synopsis: Vin, a name of convenience for the agent known as Condor, has been released from psychiatric care and is back to work. The only problem is that his work now entails the mundane job of sorting through books meant for the incinerator instead of the high-adrenaline rush of being a covert spy for the CIA. Struggling to separate hallucinations from reality, Condor attempts to immerse himself in the task at hand, but his acute sense of danger soon overwhelms him. While wandering the labyrinth of the Library of Congress's subterranean tunnels, he encounters a damsel in distress. Someone is following her, and Condor can't resist the lure of covert ops — or placing his own life in jeopardy.

Some fires never go out …

X marks the spot — and when that spot is a corpse's naked back and the X is carved in blood, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne is in no doubt that the dead man is the latest victim of a particularly vicious contract killer. It's morbid and messy — but it's a mystery with plenty of clues. This is turf warfare between North London gangs. Organized crime boss Billy Ryan is moving into someone else's territory, and that someone is ready to stand up for what he believes is his.

Thorne's got plenty on his plate when he agrees to help out ex-DCI Carol Chamberlain rake through the ashes of an old case that has come back to haunt her. Schoolgirl Jessica Clarke was lit on fire twenty years ago. Now, Gordon Rooker, the man Chamberlain put away for the crime, is up for parole, and it seems there's a copycat on the prowl.

Or perhaps it's someone trying to right a serious wrong: Jessica Clarke was the victim of mistaken identity. The intended target was the daughter of a gangland boss, a woman who would grow up to marry the current leader, Billy Ryan …

Thorne quickly identifies a tenuous link between the two crimes, and past and present fuse together to form a new, horrifying riddle. One that involves more killings, violence, greed, and a murderous family with no values — except gain at any price.

When an X is carved into his front door, Tom Thorne realizes that fires, once thought to be out, continue to burn.
