Telemystery: Amazon Orders Third Season of Ripper Street

Ripper Street (BBC)

We thought we had seen the end of Ripper Street when BBC One canceled the historical crime drama after its second season.

Now we're learning that a third season of 8 episodes will be produced with the same cast, courtesy of Amazon, which also acquired the rights to the first two seasons. It will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime several months before it airs on BBC One and BBC America.

"We're delighted to have secured not only the highly popular first two seasons of Ripper Street for our Prime Instant Video customers," said Jason Ropell, head of Amazon Instant Video International Content Acquisition, "but we can also confirm today that we will be making season three, news that we know will delight the millions of fans of this brilliant British drama."

"This is an exceptional opportunity to bring back Ripper Street for a third series by working with a great partner," said Ben Stephenson, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning.

Matthew MacFayden stars as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, whose job is to protect London's Whitechapel district in the years following the terror of Jack the Ripper. But as the 19th century enters its final decade, recession stalks Great Britain. Its preeminent role in the world is under threat and nowhere is the bloated British Empire's problems felt more keenly than in its dark heart: the East End of London.

Production is expected to begin soon, with the first episodes (or possibly even the entire season) available on Amazon Prime by the end of the year.
