The Green-Eyed Dick

An Iris Grenadine Mystery
Publisher: Weatherly Books

Nothing’s going to stop Iris Grenadine — beat reporter with the Chicago Daily Standard — from finding out who shot the mayor’s right-hand man in a house of prostitution.

It’s the summer of 1955. Iris isn’t supposed to be investigating a murder. Instead, she’s been assigned to write a feature article about an up-and-coming rockabilly singer named Elvis Presley. Sad to say, she has more important things to do than babysit the swaggering hunk with hips and lips, like chasing down an exclusive that could break the town wide open.

Fixed on using her pen as a sword, her purse as a lethal weapon, and a two-shot derringer as her backup, Iris is on a mission to right the wrongs, defend the innocent, and memorialize the dead one story at a time. When one murder turns into two and two turns into three, Iris finds herself on the trail of a serial killer who will stop at nothing to escape capture.

Standing in the way of the fast-talking, in-the-know, on-the-ball, gum-cracking reporter are a smoldering homicide detective, rival journalists, the publisher of her paper, madams of a local cathouse, gun-toting wise guys, crooked politicians, the newly elected mayor, the mayor’s personal secretary who knows everything about everybody, and an annoying private eye who holds the world record for pickup lines, come-ons, and sizzling kisses.

Iris races around town interviewing suspects, gathering evidence, chasing fat cats, confronting bad guys, hunting down a secret dossier, and engaging in more romantic clinches, flirty banter, and life-threatening situations than one woman can handle.

The number of suspects is longer than a laundry list: the tart with a golden heart, the tart’s childhood sweetheart, the victim’s bombshell wife, the wife’s mystery lover, a prostitute gone missing, a mob-connected city alderman, and the boss of the Chicago mafia. Iris adds the private eye to her list while the homicide detective makes Iris his prime suspect.

Developments darken when it looks as if Iris’s father might be involved. Events sour when Iris is arrested for solicitation. Circumstances become dangerous when mobsters threaten Iris. And things turn deadly when Iris confronts the murderer in a standoff.
