Philip Kerr To Write Young Adult Novel, The Winter Horses

Random House Children's Books

Random House Children's Books announced this morning that it has acquired a young adult novel from crime writer Philip Kerr.

Titled The Winter Horses, the storyline is set in 1941 Ukraine and portrays the survival by one 14-year-old girl who has lost everything, and two endangered horses threatened by a Nazi campaign of extermination in the dark days of World War II. Kerr captures the power of sacrifice and the endurance of the human spirit as he tells the story of Kalinka's treacherous journey across the frozen Ukrainian steppe.

"Philip Kerr skillfully handles the portrayal of an intensely dark period of 20th-century history," said Nancy Hinkel, Vice President and Publishing Director of Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, in a statement. "We are thrilled to welcome Kerr to the Knopf list."

Philip Kerr is the author of more than 20 books, including nine World War II Bernie Gunther novels, several stand-alone thrillers, and six books in the young adult series "Children of the Lamp" under the pen name of P. B. Kerr.

The Winter Horses will be published on March 25th, 2014.
