A&E Orders Bates Motel Direct to Series

A&E Television

No pilot needed here! A&E announced today that it has ordered direct to series the Psycho prequel Bates Motel. The project was first announced this past January.

Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's famous film thriller, the contemporary series will explore the relationship between Norman Bates and his mother before he became a serial killer. Though no pilot per se will be filmed, Anthony Cipriano wrote the screenplay that would have served as one — and will presumably be the first of the series' 10 episodes.

NBC has its own version of a serial killer prequel series. It has announced the drama Hannibal, based on a character created by Thomas Harris, which is set to air during the 2012/2013 television mid-season.

Bates Motel is scheduled to premiere on A&E in 2013.
