USS Ulysses: State-of-the-art nuclear submarine. Deterrent. Target.

When an Olympic medalist is the subject of an attempted assassination, former SAS trooper Jeff Bradley knows his past is once again casting a shadow over his new life. A note left by the assassin confirms his suspicions: Bradley made an enemy back in Kosovo, and the man is out for revenge. But Jeff knows the killer is not working alone: higher up the ranks sits Avni Leka, a terrorist warlord who will stop at nothing to achieve his bloody goal.

And it's not just Bradley who is under threat. A hijacking leads him to sense something bigger is being planned — a plot that, if successful, will end thousands of innocent lives, and could light the touchpaper of global conflict.

He can't allow it to happen. But events are spiralling out of control. Bradley knows he must reach the eye of the storm before it tears his world apart.

Photojournalist Mike Burke carried his camera into every war zone and hellhole on earth — and came back with the pictures (and battle scars) to prove it. He was flying high until, quite suddenly, he wasn't. When Burke's helicopter crashed and burned in Africa, he came away with his life but lost his heart to the beautiful woman who saved him. That's when he decided it was time to stop dancing with the devil. But a wicked twist of fate puts an end to Burke's dreams, leaving him adrift in Dublin with bittersweet memories … and no appetite for danger. But the devil isn't done with him yet.

An ocean away, Jack Wilson leaves prison burning for revenge. Like Burke, Wilson has had something taken from him. And he, too, dreams of starting over. Only Wilson's dream is the rest of the world's nightmare. Driven by his obsession with a Native American visionary, and guided by the secret notebooks of Nikola Tesla, the man who is said to have "invented the twentieth century," Wilson dreams of the Apocalypse — and plans to make it happen.

As a terrifying worldwide chain reaction is set in motion, Burke alone grasps the impending horror of Wilson's malevolent plan. With nothing left to lose, Burke pursues an American terrorist — a twisted genius who journeys from a lawless weapons arsenal in the Transdneister to the diamond fields of the Congo … to an isolated Nevada ranch. It is here, in a climactic showdown, that a determined Mike Burke faces a nemesis who knows no fear.

Hardly a day goes by when nine year old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions, to walking trees, to winged beasts in the woods, to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

But when the boy disappears, the villagers are faced with the possibility that one of his tall tales might have been true.

And so begins a frantic search for the boy and the truth. What they uncover deep in the forest sets off a sequence of events that leads to murder, leads to an old crime, leads to an old betrayal. Leads right to the door of an old poet.

And now it is now, writes Ruth Zardo. And the dark thing is here.

A monster once visited Three Pines. And put down deep roots. And now, Ruth knows, it is back.

Armand Gamache, the former head of homicide for the Sûreté du Québec, must face the possibility that, in not believing the boy, he himself played a terrible part in what happens next.

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

The Grid by Harry Hunsicker, Amazon Kindle format

A former federal law enforcement contractor with a somewhat spotty record, Jon Cantrell has seen — and done — just about everything. Now he's a sheriff, keeping the peace in small-town Texas. He thought that he'd finally settled into a quiet, less-complicated life — until his deputy gets himself murdered. Soon Cantrell's search for the killer points to an online-dating site designed for extramarital affairs and to a woman who may have been the unfortunate deputy's last date.

Meanwhile, someone is staging a series of seemingly random attacks on the regional power grid, and Cantrell is reluctantly pulled back into the federal fray when he accepts an off-the-books assignment to uncover the culprit. With the power company and the feds impatient for an arrest — and clues in his deputy's case pointing to something more sinister — Cantrell must run parallel, conflicting investigations. But will he find what he's looking for? Or is he about to take a fall?

Please Welcome Mystery Author Clea Simon

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Clea Simon

We are delighted to welcome author Clea Simon to Omnimystery News today, courtesy of Great Escapes Book Tours, which is coordinating her current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find her schedule here.

Clea's ninth mystery to feature Harvard graduate student Dulcie Schwartz is Code Grey (Severn House; August 2015 hardcover and ebook formats) and we asked her to tell us more about the backstory to the book. She titles her guest post for us today, "Who Would Steal a Book?"

Even today, as e-books flourish, paper books — "dead tree" books — hold a place in the hearts of readers. We trade paperbacks, check beloved volumes out of our local libraries, and sometimes even buy them, to support both the local bookstores and the big chains that make them available and the authors who produce them.

What we don't do, for the most part, is steal them. Still, book theft — particularly the theft of rare and valuable books — is a growing problem. It's serious enough that a recent conference at the British Library in London featured a talk titled, "The Written Heritage of Mankind in Peril: Theft, Retrieval, Sale and Restitution of Rare Books, Maps, and Manuscripts."

Now, I don't condone stealing books (or maps or manuscripts, for that matter). But I was intrigued by this talk because this crime is at the center of my new book. Code Grey is the ninth in a mystery series that features Dulcie Schwartz, a graduate student writing her dissertation about the Gothic novels of the late 18th Century. Along with cats (including a particular feline ghost, who makes Dulcie's life a bit Goth at times), Dulcie loves books — particularly old ones. And so when a gentle, if disturbed former scholar is found, unconscious, holding a valuable and long-missing rare volume, she finds herself with a lot of questions. Would her friend have stolen a book? Or was he injured protecting it? Whatever the answer, where has this particular book been for close to thirty years? Why has it surfaced now?

To research the possibilities, I — like Dulcie — did my research. I ended up reading a lot about the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. The name, I thought, sounded fake — like a cover for a ring of superheroes. I wasn't that far off. In its own way, the ILAB acts like a Justice League for the written word, tackling the plague of rare-book theft in the most bookish way possible — with information.

In short, the ILAB is seeking to combat book theft by running an international database of stolen books. While part of this is private, allowing member booksellers to check in and look up prospective purchases, some of it is open to the public.

Through this database, which was set up in 2010, libraries, rare book dealers, and private collectors can list works that have gone missing — and can check the provenance of pieces that come up for sale. The database assumes a certain amount of self-policing, and certainly shady deals will continue to be done. But thanks to the ILAB, they will be driven further into the shadow. No longer can a crooked clerk smuggle a valuable piece out of a Russian monastery and sell it to a legitimate bookstore in Vienna. Now when a missing monograph from a spectacular Italian theft surfaces in the estate of a reclusive collector, it can be returned to its rightful owner.

The database is only a start, and (as that talk noted) the theft of rare and valuable books is on the rise. But I found it encouraging to know that those who love books are uniting to protect them. I think Dulcie would agree.

Did a down on his luck former student steal a priceless book? Grad student and cat lover Dulcie Schwartz thinks not — and she sets out to prove it …

It's spring break, and Dulcie Schwartz has stayed behind in almost-deserted Cambridge, Massachusetts to concentrate on her thesis. But when a former student turned vagrant, Jeremy Mumbles, is found injured, with a valuable missing book clutched in his arms, Dulcie can't seem to let it go. What was he doing with the book? And why has it turned up after all these years?

With Jeremy now the prime suspect for a series of break-ins in the area, Dulcie is determined to clear the unfortunate former scholar's name. But when she finds a connection between the book he was carrying and her own research into an anonymous Gothic author, the search for clues takes on a new intensity — and a new menace.

John Lago is a very bad guy. But he's the very best at what he does. And what he does is infiltrate top-level companies and assassinate crooked executives while disguised as an intern.

Interns are invisible. That's the secret behind HR, Inc., the elite "placement agency" that doubles as a network of assassins for hire who take down high-profile targets that wouldn't be able to remember an intern's name if their lives depended on it.

At the ripe old age of almost twenty-five, John Lago is already New York City's most successful hit man. He's also an intern at a prestigious Manhattan law firm, clocking eighty hours a week getting coffee, answering phones, and doing all the grunt work actual employees are too lazy to do. He was hired to assassinate one of the firm's heavily guarded partners. His internship provides the perfect cover, enabling him to gather intel and gain access to pull off a clean, untraceable hit.

John's final assignment pits him against the toughest — and sexiest — adversary he's ever faced: Alice, an FBI agent assigned to take down the same law partner he's been assigned to kill.

Rusk was popular and athletic; Kremayne was awkward, an outcast.

Rusk can't help but feel a sting of jealousy when Kremayne turns out to be wealthy and happily married. The allegations against him, Kremayne insists, were brought on by an hysterical individual out to ruin him. Only when Rusk gets close to Kremayne's wife Anne, does he suspect that there is more to their cozy life than meets the eye. Beneath the surface, how happy is their marriage? How twisted is Kremayne? Or has Rusk compromised himself with Anne to the point that now the best result would be to find Kremayne guilty?
