Telemystery: News on Four Projects in Development at ABC and TNT

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

There was quite a bit of news this week from the television networks developing new crime dramas, many from existing series characters or books.

And while we highlighted a few of these news items, there were still more, which we've collected into this post.

• ABC is developing a drama based on The Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, the Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power by Alexandra Robbins. Dean Widenmann is writing the script that is said to be centered on a female FBI agent, who was once a member of a secret society, and discovers that her current case is related to her past association with the group.

• ABC has ordered a script for an untitled PI drama featuring a former LAPD homicide detective, whose disabling injury gives him a new ability to solve the most difficult cases. Jason Isaacs is expected to star with Stephen Chin writing.

• ABC has ordered a pilot for the legal thriller Entrapment in which a prosecutor is accused of murder. She turns to her former adversary, a streetwise defense attorney, to defend her. David Wilcox is writing the script.

• TNT has ordered a pilot for Public Morals to star Ed Burns as a late 1960s-era NYPD cop, who knows there is a fine line between good and bad in the department and on the street, and the temptations to cross over that line.

A Tarricone Murder Mystery
Publisher: Matthew Hole

Agatha Christie's country house, Greenway, is the last place Tarricone expects to be visiting. He certainly doesn't expect to be witnessing a murder either, especially one which is swiftly followed by another.

Tarricone & Son (Probate Researchers) is in a parlous financial state. It might not be, if only Tarricone himself could get up earlier in the morning. But he's never managed it yet and his aunt Nelly is getting increasingly desperate.

Luckily, her latest research has sniffed out an unexpected business opportunity: the shrieking TV B-lister Harmonica Helix has arrived at Agatha Christie's Greenway House to film a low-budget comeback. It's only just up the road and all Nelly has to do is get her handsome nephew's foot in the door ahead of the competition.

Unfortunately for Tarricone, a sudden death brings the rehearsals for a comedy whodunnit to a dramatic halt. Before long, the motley cast of actors meet similar fates until eventually there is only one person left standing.

Strangely for Tarricone, it is a turn of events which helps him slay some of his own demons and turn his life around.

A Suspense Thriller
Publisher: Dan Koontz

A tragic accident. An opportunistic CEO. A shocking announcement at the opening of a bizarre new stock market.

Seven year-old Ryan Tyler, Jr. has just been adopted. By a corporation.

Ticker symbol RTJ is the initial public offering on James Prescott's Avillage Exchange, a market that trades in the financial futures of exceptionally gifted orphans.

Before the brilliant first-grader has even had a chance to catch his breath, he is whisked off to live with seemingly perfect new parents he's not sure he can trust. And he's got a sinking feeling that the only ally he has from his previous life is somehow conspiring with the corporation.

With Prescott and a board of directors pulling strings behind the scenes, Ryan's only chance at freeing himself from his shareholders may be to team up with his fellow Avillage orphans: an embittered computer-programming savant, a once-in-a-generation NBA prospect, and a show-stopping Latin American model.

A Lexi Carmichael Mystery
Publisher: Carina Press

I'm Lexi Carmichael, geek extraordinaire. I spend my days stopping computer hackers at the National Security Agency. My nights? Those I spend avoiding my mother and eating cereal for dinner. Even though I work for a top-secret agency, I've never been in an exciting car chase, sipped a stirred (not shaken) martini, or shot a poison dart from an umbrella.

Until today, that is, when two gun-toting thugs popped up in my life and my best friend disappeared. So, I've enlisted the help of the Zimmerman twins — the reclusive architects of America's most sensitive electronic networks — to help me navigate a bewildering maze of leads to find her.

Along the way, my path collides with a sexy government agent and a rich, handsome lawyer, both of whom seem to have the hots for me. Hacking, espionage, sexy spy-men — it's a geek girl's dream come true. If it weren't for those gun-toting thugs …

Review: Tell No Lies by Gregg Hurwitz

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Tell No Lies by Gregg Hurwitz.

Review summary: Though well written and atmospheric in its own way, there isn't quite as much tension or suspense as one might expect given the sheer number of deadlines, close calls, and near misses in this novel. The premise is a solid one and the suspects are all flawed in unpredictable ways. And yet it doesn't come together as cleanly as it should. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

Tell No Lies Gregg Hurwitz

Tell No Lies
Gregg Hurwitz
St. Martin's Press (August 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Daniel Brasher has always been something of a disappointment to his old-money aristocratic San Francisco mother. Daniel left his high-paying job as a money manager to marry his community organizer wife and work at a job he loves, leading group counseling sessions with recently paroled ex-cons. Now he's ready to move on and start a private practice.

But before he leaves, he finds an envelope in his department mailbox — one intended for someone else that was placed in his slot by accident. Inside it is an unsigned piece of paper, a note that says only "admit what you've done or you will bleed for it. you have 'til november 15 at midnite." The deadline has already passed and the person to whom the envelope was addressed was brutally murdered. But this first warning is only the beginning.

Soon, Daniel finds more warnings in his office mail, to people that the police cannot track down, and to victims that cannot be saved. Daniel's efforts, however, have alerted the killer to his involvement and next he gets a threat of his own. Now, with the clock ticking, Daniel — with no clue what he's supposed to have done or to what action he must confess — must somehow appease, or outwit, a seemingly unstoppable killer.

Broke, recently divorced, and a total deadbeat, Bob Wells has spent his life as a psychiatrist only doing good in the world. When one of his patients with clear paranoid delusions starts to lose a grip, Bob has no choice but to intervene.

Emile Bardan is haunted by demons, and he believes that someone is trying to steal his most prized possession, the legendary Mask of Utu. Bob thinks it's all part of Emile's imagination until he discovers that Emile is telling the truth and that the mask is worth millions.

It's Bob who may actually be the one losing his grip. He's tired of helping people for nothing, tired of being treated like dirt — and while he may have met the girl of his dreams, he doesn't want to lose her because he can't take care of her.

There is only one thing to do: Bob is going to steal the mask himself: But doing so may mean making the biggest mistake of all — as he proceeds down a path into a dark abyss from which there is no return.
