Whiskey Rebellion by Liliana Hart

Whiskey Rebellion by Liliana Hart
An Addison Holmes Mystery (1st)
Publisher: Liliana Hart

My name is Addison Holmes, and I teach history at James Madison High School in Whiskey Bayou, Georgia. You might be under the assumption that my life went to the dogs when my fiancé left me at the altar for the home economics teacher, or when I got notice that my apartment building was going to be condemned, or even when I was desperate enough to strip to my unmentionables to earn some extra cash so I could buy a house. The truth is that I'm pretty much used to disasters following me around on a daily basis, but I could have gone without finding my principal dead in the parking lot of a seedy gentlemen's club.

After the initial shock of finding my first dead body, which included throwing back shots of Jack Daniels like it was water, I decided to take stock of my life. I was in a desperate situation and if the school board ever found out I'd been a stripper, even a bad stripper, I'd be jobless as well as fiancé-less and homeless. Fortunately, I had a friend who felt sorry enough for me to give me a job doing some surveillance work at her detective agency. And it didn't bother me one bit that it was the equivalent of a pity fuck. Money is money, and I was about to be homeless. Not to mention the fact that I was now able to stick my nose into other people's business for a good cause, find a murderer and pick up helpful tips from an incredibly attractive detective.

With a better screenplay, this action thriller might not be as forgettable as it is. But even a poor script can often be doctored up to look good … though not in this case. Poor camera-work and lots of continuity issues mar the production. But it's Henry Cavill's star turn that is probably most disappointing; his failure to engage the viewer in his predicament and his overall lack of screen presence weaken further still an already weak film.

An Abigail Vertuccio Mystery
Publisher: 40 Below Ink

Abigail Vertuccio has three goals in life. One. Don't let people find out about her infuriating habit of seeing the future. Two. Stop seeing the future. Three. Get as far away from Fairbanks, Alaska as she can. She thought she'd succeeded when she hopped in her ancient motor home, Big Ellie, and hit the road. Only now she's back — Grandma's orders — to help run the family rural air service, Alaska Virgin Air.

Home only a week, Abbey stumbles onto a plot to destroy the family business. Never one to leave matters to the experts, she and two of her zanier friends orchestrate a counter-attack of stakeouts and spying that has even the Alaska State Troopers rolling in the aisles. Despite all her efforts, she's batting zero on the spy front. Someone's trying to kill her. As if that isn't bad enough, things with her ex are alternately heating up and scaring the hell out of her.

At this point, she has only one question. What are the chances she'll end up in someone's bed, married again, or just plain dead? Okay. Two questions. What the hell good is being clairvoyant if it never seems to work when she really, really wants it to?

Game 7: Dead Ball
Allen Schatz
A Marshall Connors Mystery
Publisher: Allen Schatz

Secrets, lies, and revenge provide the sparks that ignite a fiery collision between past and present …

A puzzle takes shape as baseball's World Series unfolds, but the pieces don't fit: a string of missing women, strange threats, gambling problems, kidnappings, and relationships long dormant are all somehow connected, but Marshall Connors — major league umpire — may run out of time before he can solve the mystery.

Marshall's season has ended and he is looking forward to post-season plans that include time in Florida, first helping his mentor teach an umpire training class, followed by a lot of sun. Those plans are cut short when Marshall is given a surprise assignment to work the World Series as crew chief, but the real reason is not discovered until he is neck-deep in trouble.

The sudden change in plans rekindles a relationship with the O'Hara family — Terry, major league pitcher and Game 1 starter in the Series, Michael, Terry's father and former major leaguer, and Samantha, Terry's mother and Michael's ex-wife — but Marshall quickly realizes some things truly are better left alone.

A Quinn McSpain and Louisa Hawke Mystery
Publisher: CreateSpace

For travelers along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Fancy Gap, the fog often hangs like an azure dreamscape over the rolling green hills. But when a madman abducts two children and disappears into the wisps with the young brother and sister, the landscape becomes a nightmare for the children's parents and local residents. The county sheriff remains under intense pressure to track down the predator, yet all leads come up cold and the officers are sickened when a horrific act at the Devil's Den challenges them all to act quickly. Quinn is an ex-corporate security operative, and until recently, Louisa headed the FBI criminal division. The athletic, hard-bodied sexagenarian twosome has been experiencing a blossoming romance on kayaking trips and mountain climbing excursions as well as hard mountain bike rides. Review: The Intercept by Dick Wolf

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Intercept by Dick Wolf. A Jeremy Fisk Thriller.

Review summary: This thriller is a chilling account of what could happen right here in the US. The plots and counterplots are remarkable and thought-provoking … if also rather convoluted and seemingly over-complicated. It's an intriguing start to a new series, and it will be interesting to see how it develops without becoming repetitive. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Intercept Dick Wolf

The Intercept
Dick Wolf
A Jeremy Fisk Thriller
William Morrow (December 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Days before the July Fourth holiday and the dedication of One World Trade Center at Ground Zero, an incident aboard a commercial jet flying over the Atlantic Ocean reminds everyone that vigilance is not a task to be taken lightly. But for iconoclastic NYPD detective Jeremy Fisk, it may also be a signal that there is much more to this case than the easy answer of this being just the work of another lone terrorist.

Fisk — assigned to the department's Intelligence Division, a well-funded antiterror unit modeled on the CIA — suspects that the event might also be a warning sign that another, potentially more extraordinary scheme has been set in motion. Fluent in Arabic and the ways of his opponents, Fisk is a rule breaker who follows his gut — even if it means defying those above him in the department's food chain. So when a passenger from the same plane, a Saudi Arabian national, disappears into the crowds of Manhattan, it's up to Fisk and his partner Krina Gersten to find him before the celebrations begin.

Watching each new lead fizzle, chasing shadows to dead ends, Fisk and Gersten quickly realize that their opponents are smarter and more agile than any they have ever faced. Extremely clever and seemingly invisible, they are able to exploit any security weak-ness and anticipate Fisk's every move … and time is running out.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less (130223)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

A quick note: We're a little late in getting this weekly update published today because … drum roll … Amazon has a new list of titles in its semi-annual (or thereabouts) promotion, The Big Deal. We wanted to make sure that we didn't duplicate any titles here that you can find there … and we think we haven't, but one or two may have slipped by. (Here's a direct link to the 58 titles in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category of The Big Deal.)

Below are listed the new $2.99 or less titles we added either today or mentioned in separate posts earlier this week; click on the cover or title for more information or to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.
