A Novel of Suspense

In West Akron, Ohio, there lived a reclusive elderly man who always wore mittens, even in July. He had no friends and no family; all over town, he was known as the Man from Primrose Lane. And on a summer day, someone murdered him.

Fast-forward four years. David Neff, the bestselling author of a true-crime book about an Ohio serial killer, is a broken man after his wife's inexplicable suicide. When an unexpected visit from an old friend introduces him to the strange mystery of "the man with a thousand mittens", David decides to investigate. What he finds draws him back into a world he thought he had left behind forever. And the closer David gets to uncovering the true identity of the Man from Primrose Lane, the more he begins to understand the dangerous power of his own obsessions and how they may be connected to the deaths of both the old hermit and his beloved wife.

A Sydney Simone Mystery

Sydney Simone, wounded herself, is dedicated to helping via a cloaked website and identity those whose wrongs can't be righted by orthodox means. First she verifies the client's story; then she accepts payment: half up front, half on completion of her work. Usually it's a form of human pest control.

For cover, Sydney works as an assistant at the Rose Madder Gallery in West Palm Beach run by Oscar Leopold. Oscar, a sculptor, has left his law practice behind. But now his former partner Roy is arrested for murdering Big Jack, an attorney with a sleazy television advertising presence. At the same time Sydney is dealing with a client who has seemingly penetrated her defenses and demands she complete a job — rubbing out Big Jack — an assignment where she has accepted, and pocketed, an unusually large fee. So now Sydney the client gives Sydney a new target and Sydney switches gears: dedicated to saving herself, Oscar, and Roy, even as she continues to operate HumanPestControl.com.

Teaming with Oscar isn't easy since she can't tell him all she knows, but soon their investigation leads to a complex insurance fraud scheme that implicates Roy — perhaps he really is guilty. But Oscar becomes an investigative target himself and is arrested, then kidnapped and assaulted as he tries to find the true killer.

The story ranges from the corporate offices of South Florida to the backwaters of the panhandle. The bad guys are dangerous and desperate to keep their careers, their freedom, even their lives. Oscar and Sydney, their own lives and livelihoods at stake, must up their game — Sydney may even have to reveal her game — to survive.

Please Welcome Mystery Author Matt Witten

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post
by Matt Witten

We are delighted to welcome novelist Matt Witten as our guest.

Matt's first mystery, Breakfast at Madeline's, was the winner of the 1998 Malice Domestic Grant for an unpublished writer. It was subsequently published by Signet in 1999 and he has just released it as an ebook (November 2012, Kindle format).

Today Matt tells us more about how the book came about. And he is also giving two of our readers a chance to win a copy of Breakfast at Madeline's; details below.

The main piece of advice I give to writers, both new and established, is: Write what you're passionate about. I followed that advice when I wrote Breakfast at Madeline's.

Matt Witten

For most of my life, ever since I got hooked on Sherlock Holmes in fourth grade, my favorite form of art was the murder mystery novel. I enjoy going to plays and movies, and seeing the odd folk music concert, and reading a good true crime book; but to me, there's nothing better than making a nice cup of tea and reading a murder mystery. When I hit my late twenties, it occurred to me: I've always enjoyed reading them. Why not try writing one?

For the main characters, I simply chose people based on myself, my wife, and our two sons. It made researching easy — I didn't have to do any!

Establishing the tone for the novel was a great deal trickier. I wanted something light and breezy, but with enough weight to carry a murder narrative. I wrote and rewrote the first four pages of the book for about four months, trying to establish the right tone. Once I was happy with the first four pages, the entire rest of the book took me maybe three months to write.

I always get a kick out of it when people tell me how much they like the breezy tone of Breakfast at Madeline's. Because I remember how hard I worked to make it seem breezy!

Breakfast at Madeline's is both a murder mystery and also a story about how hard it is to create art. The murder victim is a man who's spent his entire life trying to write a memoir. Several of the suspects are struggling artists and arts administrators. As someone who has both struggled and been successful creating art, I identify with everybody who has ever faced a blank page or canvass.

Breakfast at Madeline's is the first of four mystery novels that were published by Signet. They sold well but then went out of print, and this year I've decided to self-publish them on Amazon. So far I must say the book is selling quite well — much better than I expected. I'll be putting out the other three novels every three months.

My totally unsophisticated marketing strategy is: when I put out the books, I'll give them away for free for five days, to build word of mouth. That's what I did with Breakfast at Madeline's. If you'd like to receive an email when I offer the novels for free, you can shoot me a quick email at mwitten@verizon.net.

That's the story from here. Since writing my mystery novels, I've gone on to write for such TV shows as House, Law & Order, and Pretty Little Liars. But my favorite form of art is still the murder mystery. Happy reading to you all!

Not even murder.

During his twenty-six-year career, D.C. radio talk show host Rick Jennings steered clear of outrageous radio. Wasn't his thing. So when WTLK execs tap him for the Afternoon Circus to land a lucrative satellite deal, Rick struggles to maintain his standards — and his dignity. A chilling call ("I'm a long-time listener, first time killer.") leads to the discovery of an intern's arm in a trashcan. Rick spars with the "First Time" killer over the airwaves. The police are stymied. Ratings skyrocket. And First Time continues to knock off members of the Circus, phoning in to gloat afterward.

In a world of psychics and poseurs, crazy deejays and crazier callers, it's up to Rick to bring First Time down before more people perish.

A Leo Demidov Mystery

Stalin's Soviet Union strives to be a paradise for its workers, providing for all of their needs. One of its fundamental pillars is that its citizens live free from the fear of ordinary crime and criminals.

But in this society, millions do live in fear … of the State. Death is a whisper away. The mere suspicion of ideological disloyalty — owning a book from the decadent West, the wrong word at the wrong time — sends millions of innocents into the Gulags or to their executions. Defending the system from its citizens is the MGB, the State Security Force. And no MGB officer is more courageous, conscientious, or idealistic than Leo Demidov.

A war hero with a beautiful wife, Leo lives in relative luxury in Moscow, even providing a decent apartment for his parents. His only ambition has been to serve his country. For this greater good, he has arrested and interrogated.

Then the impossible happens. A different kind of criminal — a murderer — is on the loose, killing at will. At the same time, Leo finds himself demoted and denounced by his enemies, his world turned upside down, and every belief he's ever held shattered. The only way to save his life and the lives of his family is to uncover this criminal. But in a society that is officially paradise, it's a crime against the State to suggest that a murderer-much less a serial killer-is in their midst. Exiled from his home, with only his wife, Raisa, remaining at his side, Leo must confront the vast resources and reach of the MBG to find and stop a criminal that the State won't admit even exists.

Review: The Land Grant by Carlos Cisneros

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The Land Grant by Carlos Cisneros. An Alejandro Del Fuerte Legal Thriller.

Review summary: This is a fast moving legal thriller, one with a strong premise — an interesting variation on "be careful what you wish for, you might just get it" — but with a storyline that quickly becomes quite cynical and ultimately quite depressing. Every book doesn't have to have a happy ending, but this one — while there is a glimmer of hope on the final page — is surprisingly bleak. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

An Alejandro Del Fuerte Legal Thriller
Arte Público Press (September 2012)

Publisher synopsis: When Brownsville attorney Alejandro Del Fuerte is asked to take over the prosecution of a case involving a Spanish land grant, he's excited about the potentially lucrative opportunity. There's billions in oil and gas royalties at stake. Not to mention the boost to his reputation as the "go-to" lawyer in South Texas for high-stakes litigation.

But he needs to convince his partners in Del Fuerte, Fetzer & Montemayor to accept the case, and he knows his partner and fiance, Gigi Montemayor, will be against it. The defendant and owner of the disputed land is the Agnus Dei Foundation, which is headed by Bishop Salamanca, the priest she wants to marry them. And to make matters worse, the previous lawyers involved in the case have ended up dead or institutionalized.

A surprise call from the Bishop warning him not to take the case is soon followed by terrifying threats to Alex and his family by forces from south of the border to the Vatican itself. It seems they'll stop at nothing physical threats, blackmail and perhaps even murder to get him off the case.

Today Michael comments on the writing of his books. And he is giving one of our readers a chance to win a copy; details below.

Why is the world in such chaos? What's causing the discord that spans from erratic weather patterns, frequency of horrific natural disasters to destabilization of governments, the global financial meltdown and man's in-humanity to man?

One person has the answer. World-renowned Chef Jason Wade has just stumbled onto a terrifying secret, a diabolical plan. He is forced back into his dark past, a dangerous web of espionage and ruthless assassins.

Now he and his wife are in peril, the targets of one of the most notorious clandestine networks in the world — The Global Intellect Network, G.I.N. Wade is the only one who can stop them. But he finds himself in a treacherous race against time across two continents only to come face to face with a shocking nightmare that has haunted him since childhood.

The characters just came to me years ago and I have just now had the time/chance to write the book. The book has had an evolution. Since I lived in NYC that city has been a great influence on my writing and my book started out as a New York City crime drama much like the TV series NYPD Blue.

Then I read one of Robert Ludlum's books and fell in love with the whole international spy thriller. It was a great fit for me since I love to travel. Hence that's how I started to write international spy thriller!

I have done some international travel but some of the places where my characters journey to in the book, I have not been yet. Like Corsica … so I had to do a lot of research about this French island.

I grew up on Agent 007, other spy and crime films, so I have always been fascinated by this genre and studying how these stories are composed at a very early age. The process came very natural to me … organic.
