MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

No extra notes this week so … let's get on to our update!

Review: Turkey Trouble on the National Mall by Ron Roy

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Turkey Trouble on the National Mall by Ron Roy. A Capital Mystery.

Review summary: The mystery plot in this early chapter book for kids is really quite sophisticated. Plug a few of the obvious plot holes and it could stand in for an adult thriller. This exciting adventure includes political intrigue, international conspiracy, and an elaborate sting operation, all to save a turkey named Cloud. (Click here for text of full review.)

Telemystery: The Secret of Crickley Hall Airs This Weekend on BBC America

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

BBC America has released a 30-second promo for The Secret of Crickley Hall, which airs this weekend, Sunday October 28th at 5 PM ET.

Based on the novel of the same title by James Herbert, the thriller begins a year after the disappearance of Cam, the son of Gabe Caliegh (Tom Ellis) and Eve Caleigh (Suranne Jones).

As the couple and their two daughters attempt to start anew, they head to Crickley Hall — a seemingly perfect countryside house. But when cellar doors start to open on their own, phantom children's cries are heard through the night and a frenzied cane-wielding specter rears its head — the Caleighs realize the house comes with a lot more than they bargained for.

But just as they're ready to move out, Eve hears Cam's cries and all bets are off.

Shifting between 1943 and present day, the Caleighs are desperate to find the source of the crying and the connection the haunted house has to their son. Will they find him before the evil that stalks Crickley Hall finds their other children?

Written and directed by Joe Ahearne, this three-hour classic haunted house spine chiller is full of scares, yet underpinned by the heartbreaking story of a family needing to heal and ghosts who need to be laid to rest.

Would you stay in a haunted house for more than one night?

Would you live in a place where ghostly things keep happening? Where a cellar door you know you locked the night before is always open the following morning? Where hushed whimpering is heard? Where white shadows steal through the darkness? Where the presence of evil is all around you?

Would you? Should you?

The Caleighs did, but they had their reasons. They should have known better though. As the terror mounts, they begin to regret their decision. As the horror rises, they realize their very lives are at risk … and so is their sanity. For the secret of Crickley Hall is beyond all nightmares.

Telemystery: Casting News for TNT's King and Maxwell

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Early last month we reported that TNT had ordered a pilot for King and Maxwell, a series based on characters created by crime novelist David Baldacci.

Today we're learning that both leads have now been cast. Rebecca Romijn (the "X-Men films) will play Michelle Maxell opposite Jon Tenney, who was previously announced to play Sean King (The Closer, Major Crimes).

In the series, both play former Secret Service agents, who are now private investigators specializing in handling sensitive cases in the Washington DC area.

The characters were introduced in the 2003 thriller Split Second. To date, there are six books in the series.

Shane Brennan (NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles) has written the pilot screenplay and will co-executive produce. Baldacci will serve as a consultant.

A Sean King and Michelle Maxwell Mystery (1st in series)

It was only a split second — but that's all it took for Secret Service agent Sean King's attention to wander and his "protectee", third-party presidential candidate Clyde Ritter, to die. King retired from the Service in disgrace, and now, eight years later, balances careers as a lawyer and a part-time deputy sheriff in a small Virginia town.

Then he hears the news: Once again, a third-party candidate has been taken out of the presidential race — abducted right under the nose of Secret Service agent Michelle Maxwell.

King and Maxwell form an uneasy alliance, and their search for answers becomes a bid for redemption as they delve into the government's Witness Protection Program and the mysterious past of Clyde Ritter's dead assassin. But the truth is never quite what it seems, and these two agents have learned that even one moment looking in the wrong direction can be deadly.

Review: A Fistful of Collars by Spencer Quinn

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

A Fistful of Collars by Spencer Quinn. A Chet and Bernie Mystery.

Review summary: New readers to the series — the books do not have to be read in any particular order — will no doubt be thoroughly entertained by Chet, the canine narrator. But those readers familiar with the books may feel the series premise is wearing a little thin, that the humor isn't as original as it once was. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Chet and Bernie Mystery
Atria Books (September 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Hoping to bring some Tinseltown money to the Valley, the mayor lures a movie studio to town to shoot their next production, a big-budget Western in the classic tradition. The star is none other than ruggedly handsome — and notoriously badly behaved — Thad Perry. When the mayor decides that someone needs to keep an eye on Thad so that he doesn't get into too much trouble, Bernie and Chet are handpicked for the job. The money is good but something smells fishy, and what should have been a simple matter of babysitting soon gets more complicated — especially when they discover that Thad has a mysterious connection to the Valley that nobody wants to talk about. What kind of secret could Thad have left behind when he went to Hollywood to seek fame and fortune? The only people who might know the answer have a bad habit of turning up dead before they can talk.

As Bernie's relationship with his longtime girlfriend Suzie goes long-distance, and Chet's late-night assignations appear to have resulted in an unexpected dividend, it's all our two sleuths can do to keep Thad and his motley entourage of yes-men, handlers, and hangers-on in their sights. Worst of all, Thad is a self-proclaimed cat person, and his feline friend Brando has taken an instant dislike to Chet.
