Winter's Bone Wins Gotham Indepdendent Film Awards Best Feature

The Gotham Indepdendent Film Awards were given out last night and Winter's Bone won the top prize for Best Feature. The film was also honored for Best Ensemble Performance.

Winter's Bone, which also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize earlier this year, is adapted from the 2006 novel of the same title by Daniel Woodrell.

Omnimystery's resident TV and film reviewer called Winter's Bone "one of the best films of the year", adding "the outstanding performance by Jennifer Lawrence as a young woman determined to do whatever it takes to save her family [in] a superficially simple yet deceptively complex plot that keeps us engaged throughout." The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, New This Week on DVD and Blu-ray Disc

Adapted from the novel Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer, it all begins with a choice in this third film of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse.

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is surrounded by danger as Seattle is hit by a string of murders and an evil vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, Bella is forced to choose between her love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and her friend, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) — knowing that her decision may ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf.

Eclipse runs 124 minutes and is rated PG-13.

New Clip from HBO's Game of Thrones

HBO has released a new clip from Game of Thrones, its upcoming adaptation of the books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. The title comes from the first book in the series, A Game of Thrones. (Four books have been written in the series; three more are planned.)

From the official description of the series: Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyon. Kings and Queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men ... all will play the Game of Thrones.

A Touch of Frost, New This Week on DVD

David Jason stars as Detective Inspector William Edward "Jack" Frost in A Touch of Frost, based in part on the crime novels by R. D. Wingfield, who wrote six books featuring the character from 1984 through 2008. In contrast to many crime dramas, there has no regular sidekick for Frost over the years.

A Touch of Frost has aired on an irregular schedule since its premiere in 1992, with some seasons (like this one) consisting of but a single episode.

The A Touch of Frost: Season Fifteen DVD set of 1 disc contains the two-part episode that originally aired on ITV as an "Easter Special" in April 2010. This may be the last season for the series as the network has not indicated its intention to continue it.

Collusion by Stuart Neville (Book Review)

Collusion by Stuart Neville. Non-series. Soho Crime Hardcover, October 2010.

The literary quality of this work cannot be denied, it is an exceptionally well written book; but the story here is so pedestrian, and so drawn out, that it feels many times longer than it really is. Indeed, for all practical purposes, it is not a sequel to The Ghosts of Belfast, but a novel-length epilogue.

Winners of the 2010 Irish Book Awards Announced

The winners of the fifth annual Irish Book Awards for 2010 were announced yesterday, recognizing the best books in ten categories, including crime fiction. Winners were selected from a shortlist by both the Irish Literary Academy and the voting public.

The Crime Fiction Book of the Year is Dark Times in the City by Gene Kerrigan (Vintage).

The fifth title in the Skulduggery Pleasant series, Mortal Coil by Derek Landy (HarperCollins), featuring the well-dressed, wise-cracking, living-dead, skeleton magician-detective, received the award for Best Young Adult Book.

A list of the top 15 mystery hardcover bestsellers for the week ending November 26th, 2010 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

No change among the top three -- The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson is still atop the list -- but quite a bit of shuffling elsewhere, including two new titles this week.

CBS Developing Two New Crime Dramas

The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed blog is reporting that CBS is developing two dramas that have criminal elements.

From CSI creator Anthony Zuiker comes Desperado, a Texas-based Justified-esque series about lawmen who bring cowboy-style justice to San Antonio.

And from Michael Cuesta (Dexter) comes Knife Fight, in which a female public defender becomes a prosecutor in search of the truth. It is based on a short story of the same title by mystery writer Joel Goldman that appeared in The Prosecution Rests, edited by Linda Fairstein (who's developing her own series, One Police Plaza, for ABC).
