SyFy Orders Haven, a Series based on the novel The Colorado Kid by Stephen King

SyFy Channel

In a press release earlier this week, SyFy (a unit of NBC Universal) announced it had ordered 13 episodes of a supernatural drama series based on the mystery novel The Colorado Kid by Stephen King, which was published as an original story for Hard Case Crime in 2005.

The network has renamed the series Haven, and provided the following description: "Deep in the heart of Maine, Haven is a town where people with supernatural abilities have migrated for generations because it mutes their powers, allowing them to lead normal lives. At least, until recently. When hot-shot FBI agent Audrey Parker is called to Haven to solve the murder of a local ex-con, she catches the killer but uncovers a much deeper mystery about this town. Each week, as the town-peoples' dormant powers begin to express themselves, Audrey will try to keep these supernatural forces at bay while unraveling the many mysteries of Haven - including one surrounding her own surprising past in this extraordinary place."

Production is expected to begin early next year, with an air date later in 2010.

Film Clip from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Interview with the Director, on the WSJ

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Last Friday, the Wall Street Journal published an exclusive clip from the film based on the bestselling thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson as well as an interview with the director. The film opens in the US on March 19, 2010.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first book in the "Millennium" trilogy by Larsson, who died before any of the books had been published. The central characters are investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and world-class computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. (In our review of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we called the book "Swedish noir at its best.")

In the book, Blomkvist is hired to get to the bottom of the disappearance -- and possible murder -- of a Harriet Vanger, a young woman from one of the wealthiest families in Sweden who vanished 40 years ago. He's assisted by Lisbeth in his investigation, and together, this unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism—and an unexpected connection between themselves.

Teaser Trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J. K. Rowling

On the DVD/Blu-ray releases of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Warner Bros. released a teaser trailer for the next film (actually the final two films) in the series, which is based on J. K. Rowling's 7th and final book the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The nearly 2 minute trailer includes behind-the-scenes footage of filming as well as commentary from director David Yates and producer David Heyman.

About Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: "His hand closed automatically around the fake Horcrux, but in spite of everything, in spite of the dark and twisting path he saw stretching ahead for himself, in spite of the final meeting with Voldemort he knew must come, whether in a month, in a year, or in ten, he felt his heart lift at the thought that there was still one last golden day of peace left to enjoy with Ron and Hermione." With these words Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince draws to a close. And here, in this seventh and final book, Harry discovers what fate truly has in store for him as he inexorably makes his way to that final meeting with Voldemort.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) is scheduled for release November 19, 2010. Part 2 is scheduled to be released about 6 months later.

Chris Pine Confirmed as the Next Jack Ryan, in an Original Screenplay Film

Chris Pine

ComingSoon.net reports on a press conference today in which producer Mace Neufeld confirmed some of the details surrounding the next Jack Ryan thriller, based on a character created by Tom Clancy.

Chris Pine is set to star as Jack Ryan, the fourth actor to do so. (Alec Baldwin played the character in The Hunt for Red October (1990), Harrison Ford in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), and most recently Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears (2002).) The as yet untitled film will be based on an original screenplay, and not one of Clancy's novels.

"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," says Neufeld, "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."

Review: Robin Lehman introduces FBI Special Agent Regan Manning in Perseverance, a political thriller that may be the first of a new series.

Manning and her team from Quantico have been sent to Juneau, Alaska, the city of Manning's birth, to protect Washington officials and other VIPs during a three day summit conference. Convened by Energy Secretary Ella Vargas, the meeting is largely intended as a way to convince Alaskans that their state is the perfect place for the administration's bold new energy policy, which includes a newly devised method of drilling for oil and, oh by the way, a nuclear waste facility. Many residents have already voiced their negative opinion on the plan, and protest demonstrations are expected. But the extent of the violence is not expected. Just after the official plane lands at the airport, a pipe bomb explodes. The crowd at the airport erupts into a riot just as another bomb destroys a historic glacier. A third bomb is found, and defused, on a tram at the top of Mount Roberts, one of Juneau's most popular scenic attractions. The protestors claim the only way to get Washington's attention is to be blunt about their cause: America's last frontier is not the place for nuclear waste.

But Ella Vargas is not to be deterred. She ignores instructions laid out by Manning, intended to safeguard her, then blames Manning when her safety is at risk. Later Vargas disappears, and it falls to Manning and her team to find her. Vargas is soon found in a mining cave, but it appears she entered voluntarily, but for what purpose?. And when the stairs into the mine collapse, Manning isn't sure who is to blame. Can she trust the woman she is sworn to protect?

Perseverance is a thriller with an interesting premise, one that illustrates the difficulty of balancing the needs of the country against the needs of the community. The politics are well handled here, as is the pacing of the story. Regan Manning is an appealing character, imbued with wit and charm and the strength to take on her opponents (even if they're presumably on her side) and survive. Perseverance works well as a stand-alone novel, but many readers will undoubtedly like to see more of Regan Manning persevere, as it were, in future cases.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Perseverance and to Fogdog Press for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): When Energy Secretary Ella Vargas opens the Alaska Energy Summit in Juneau, she's confident she can sell the administration's bold new energy plan -- including a nuclear waste facility in Alaska's interior. "The key word is balance," she declares. But someone unbalanced is bombing Juneau's landmarks, hoping to scare off Vargas and her fellow VIPs.

FBI Special Agent Regan Manning, a former Juneau girl, heads up the team from Quantico who must protect the dignitaries from the growing mob of angry protestors -- and from each other as their political agendas collide.

Tension mounts as Regan is forced to confront a string of personal and professional tests that culminates in the energy secretary's disappearance. Chastened that it happened on her watch, the agent is determined to find Vargas, ultimately uncovering a plot that raeches as high as the White House and as far as the Middle East. When Regan gets too close for comfort, somebody sets out to silence her.

Review written by Karan, Grade 6. Date of review: December 2009.

Review: Suspense, action, dilemma, and perplexity are all words that describe the book, A Dog Called Grk, written by Joshua Doder. This book is the first in the “Grk” series that will blow people’s minds away. One chilly day, a boy named Tim is followed by this small black and white dog. Tim knows that his parents will kill him if he lets a stray dog indoors because Tim’s mom is allergic to dogs. Though his parents will say no, he still decides to ask if he can keep the dog, but of course, they say no way, never. After finding out who the dog belongs to, Tim goes on a top secret mission that his parents wouldn’t approve of, and, if they found out, they would ground him forever. Now Tim is faced with the challenge of getting the dog back to its owners. He will have to maneuver through a high-security prison without alarming anybody, he will have to pilot a real life helicopter with the only help of some piloting skills he earned while playing some video games and he will have to make a hair-raising run to the border with a few friends. And his only companion for doing all these mind-boggling things, is a brave little dog named Grk.

I loved the book, it was very intense, and I think my heart skipped a beat when I found out that Tim really flew the real life helicopter. My favorite part though, was the part when Tim, Natascha and Max escaped from the high-security prison, with the only cover of a few hundred criminals who were making a getaway from all the prison guards who were trying to stop the criminals from running away and causing even more havoc. When I was reading this part in the astonishing story, I almost fell of my chair that I was sitting on. That was how suspenseful the part in the story was. I also liked the part where Tim, Natascha, Max and Miranda confused and out-smarted the border guards so that they could make a run for it, without letting anybody know where they went. On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best I would rate this book as a 5! This was one of the most breath-taking books that I have read before in my life. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes to read suspenseful book with just a hint or two of action. No wonder this book got a compliment from, Time Out New York Kids. This is what Time Out said, “This first entry in the series crackles with Doder’s crisp prose and absurdist sensibility.” I can’t wait to read the next in the series, the next book is called, Grk and the Pelotti Gang, to me the next book in the series sounds like even more action and suspense combined to make the perfect 2nd book in the “Grk” series.
