Mystery Bestsellers for the Week Ending January 20, 2012

A list of the top 15 mystery hardcover bestsellers for the week ending January 20th, 2012 has been posted by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books.

We're not sure we've ever seen this happen before, but after spending much of 2010 at number one and then finally dropping out of the top 10, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson has retained the top spot on our list this week. It's by only the barest of margins, but still … wow!

Entering the list at number 12 is the 17th mystery to feature national park ranger Anna Pigeon, The Rope by Nevada Barr, a prequel to the series.

In 1995 and 35 years old, fresh off the bus from New York City and nursing a broken heart, Anna Pigeon takes a decidedly unglamorous job as a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, Anna goes hiking into the park never to return. Her co-workers think she’s simply moved on — her cabin is cleaned out and her things gone. But Anna herself wakes up, trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, without supplies and no clear memory of how she found herself in this situation.

The World Will Be Watching: A New Poster for The Hunger Games

A new poster for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games has been released (right; click for larger version). The tagline: "The world will be watching."

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, and Josh Hutcherson as her fellow competitor Peeta. The film also stars Liam Hemsworth as her friend Gale and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy.

New Poster for Safe, an Action Thriller with Jason Statham

A new poster for the Jason Statham action thriller — actually, that's probably a bit redundant; we're not sure we've ever seen a Jason Statham film that wasn't an action thriller — Safe has been released (right; click for larger version).

Statham stars as Luke Wright, a second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, who lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change … until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed.

But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action … and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a "counter." He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for.

Realizing he's the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city's brutal underworld to save an innocent girl's life … and perhaps even redeem his own.

Haywire Opens in Theaters Friday, January 20th

This Friday, January 20th, the action thriller Haywire opens in theaters. The film's tagline: "They left her no choice."

Gina Carano stars as Mallory Kane, a highly trained operative, who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive. Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious — and dangerous — trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she'll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

The film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, also stars Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and Michael Douglas.

Telemystery: CBS Orders Pilot for Elementary, Sherlock Holmes in Manhattan

It was probably inevitable but still …

What with the success of BBC's contemporary remake of the Sherlock Holmes' stories in London — and no doubt in part also to the popularity of the two recent "Sherlock Holmes" films starring Robert Downey Jr. — CBS has just ordered a pilot for … we probably don't even need to finish that statement; you already know what's coming.

Yes, CBS has ordered a pilot for Elementary, a "modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, with Sherlock now living in New York City."

Ugh.

If they're going to do this, at least do it differently. Give us a twist. But this sounds exactly like the superb BBC series Sherlock, simply substituting Manhattan for London.

Here's a thought: Rather than spend the money on a pilot, offer to produce more episodes of Sherlock and then license them to air in the US. No … that would be too — wait for it — elementary.

Let's hope that if the Elementary pilot is picked up to series at least someone has the sense to change the name.

New Trailer for The Woman in the Fifth, Adapted from the Novel by Douglas Kennedy

A new UK trailer for the French film adaptation of The Woman in the Fifth, the 2007 novel of suspense by Douglas Kennedy, has been released; we've embedded it below.

Released late last year as La femme du Vème, the film stars Ethan Hawke, who flees to Paris after a scandal costs him his job, only to meet a woman, who may be involved in a series of murders.

Here's the synopsis from the book, which was published in the US last summer by Atria: Harry Ricks (Ethan Hawke in the film) is a man who has lost everything. A romantic mistake at the small American college where he used to teach has cost him his job, his marriage, and the love of his only child. Hounded by scandal, he flees to Paris, where a series of accidental encounters lands him in a grubby room with a job as night watchman for a sinister operation. Just when he begins to think he has hit rock bottom, romance enters his life in the form of Margit — a cultivated, widowed Hungarian émigré who shares Harry’s profound loneliness but who keeps her distance, remaining guarded about her past. As Harry wrestles with Margit’s reticence, he begins to notice that all those who have recently done him wrong are meeting unfortunate ends — and it soon becomes apparent that he has stumbled into a nightmare from which there is no escape.

ATO Pictures has acquired the rights to the film, but no release date has been scheduled for the US. It opens in UK theaters February 17th, 2012.

Lionsgate Moves Forward with Film Adaptation of Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games — the film adaptation of the first novel in the young adult trilogy by Suzanne Collins — is still a couple of months away from being in theaters, but Lionsgate is moving forward with plans to film the second book, Catching Fire. (Lionsgate acquired Summit Entertainment this past week, which produced The Hunger Games.)

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) is writing the script, which is expected to be directed by Gary Ross, who also directed The Hunger Games and co-wrote its screenplay with Collins.

If you haven't read the books in the series and don't want to know anything about how The Hunger Games ends, stop reading here!

The principals in the cast — notably Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth — are also expected to reprise their roles.

In the book, against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Catching Fire already has a release date: November 22nd, 2013.The Hunger Games opens March 23rd, 2012.

Telemystery: White Collar, Justified, and Southland Return with New Episodes Tuesday, January 17th

Three cable network prime time crime series return with new episodes tomorrow, Tuesday January 17th. Better get your DVRs ready …

First up is one of our favorite shows, White Collar, on USA Network at 10 PM (ET/PT). When the series took its mid-season break, Mrs. Suit — as Mozzie calls her — had been kidnapped. In an episode titled "Checkmate", Neal is forced to come clean with Peter about the hidden cache of stolen art treasures in order to save Elizabeth. Or does Neal have another plan in mind?

Over on FX Networks, also at 10 PM (ET/PT) is the third season premiere of Justified. The arrival of a dangerous new player in Lexington puts Raylan on a collision course with a sadistic Dixie Mafia hitman in an episode titled "The Gunfighter".

Finally, on TNT — you guessed it, at 10 PM (ET/PT) — is the fourth season premiere of Southland with an episode titled "Wednesday". Officer John Cooper returns to duty after recovering from back surgery and meets his new partner, Officer Jessica Tang (special guest star Lucy Liu), a tough and disciplined cop with her own set of baggage from working the streets.

Sony Releases Synopsis for Remake of Total Recall

Sony Pictures has released a synopsis for its remake of the 1990 sci-fi action thriller Total Recall … and it sounds identical to the original (the absense of the planet Mars, notwithstanding):

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories.

For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (played by Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life — real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police — controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world — Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

This seems to us one of those films that doesn't need to be remade unless it is reimagined in some way … and other than changing the (unspecified) location, it's hard to say from the synopsis provided by the studio what's new or different about it.

Total Recall — both the original and this new version — is inspired by the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. It opens in US theaters August 3rd, 2012.

BBC Commissions Third Season of Sherlock

We are hearing that, following the conclusion of airing the second season of Sherlock in the UK, a third season has been commissioned by BBC.

"Yes of course there's going to be a third series - it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!" tweeted Steven Moffat, the co-creator of the series.

The third (and final) episode of the season was adapted from "The Final Problem", the story in which Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty stumble over the Reichenbach Falls to their (apparent) deaths. So there was no guarantee that the series would continue.

We're thrilled it will.

We still have many months to go before the second season hits our shores. PBS's Masterpiece Mystery has scheduled the season premiere for May 6th.

New Poster for Film Adaptation of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

A new poster for the film adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's 2009 alternate history thriller Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has been released. It is shown below (right, click for larger version) together with an earlier poster (left, click for larger version), which we realized we hadn't yet posted. (We think the first one is quite dramatic; less sure about the most recent one.)

The author uses a recently discovered document titled The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, given to him by a vampire named Henry Sturges, to write this updated biography of our 16th President. "[H]enceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion," Lincoln writes. "I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose …"

Grahame-Smith adapted his book for the film, which is directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Benjamin Walker stars as Lincoln with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as his wife Mary. The film also features Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturges and Rufus Sewell as Adam, Lincoln's vampire nemesis. It opens in theaters June 22nd, 2012.

Winners of the 2012 German Crime Novel Prizes Announced

The Deutscher Krimi Preis (German Crime Novel Prize) winners for 2012 have been announced. (We haven't yet added this prize to our website, but will be doing so soon.)

The winner of the German-language crime novel is Wer das Schweigen bricht by Mechtild Borrmann. Second place went to Friedrich Ani for Süden with third place going to Elisabeth Herrmann for Zeugin der Toten.

The winner of the international crime novel is Truth by Peter Temple. Second and third places were awarded to, respectively, Savages (published as Zeit des Zorns) by Don Winslow and Started Early, Took My Dog (published as Das vergessene Kind) by Kate Atkinson.

Telemystery: Adam-12 and Waking the Dead, New on DVD; George Gently New on Blu-ray

Martin Milner and Kent McCord star as LAPD officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed in Adam-12, with stories based on real police cases in and around the city of Los Angeles.

This season finds the officers in helicopters, on horseback and on airport patrol in locations ranging from the foothills to Venice Beach. The boys in blue have their work cut out for them when they face teenage robbers, angry dogs, a drunken boat cook, bomb threats, armed carjackers and more.

Adam-12: Season Six is available on DVD and consists of episodes that originally aired on NBC from September 1973 through March 1974.

Acorn Media has recently starting delivering Blu-ray versions of previously released series on DVD, with this week's entry being the first season of George Gently.

Martin Shaw stars as Scotland Yard's most incorruptible detective, an old-time copper in a rapidly changing world. Set in rural Northumberland during the mid-1960s, the series is based on a character created by crime novelist Alan Hunter, who wrote a great number of mysteries featuring Chief Superintendent Gently from 1955 through 1999.

George Gently: Series One is available on Blu-ray and consists of episodes that originally aired on BBC during 2007 and 2008.

Recently concluding its ninth and final season, Waking the Dead is a police procedural centered on a cold case division of police officers.

The team is led by Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve). His partner is DI Spencer Jordan (Wil Johnson), with other members including a psychologist (Sue Johnston as Dr. Grace Foley) and forensic pathologist (Tara Fitzgerald as Dr. Eve Lockhart). This latter character will be featured in a spin-off series titled The Body Farm.

Waking the Dead: Season Six is available on DVD and consists of episodes that originally aired on BBC in early 2007.

IDW Announces Publication Date of Third Parker Graphic Novel, The Score

What kind of man tries to knock off a whole town? Parker, of course.

Earlier this month IDW Publishing's editor-in-chief Chris Ryall announced that the third volume in Darwyn Cooke's "Parker" graphic novels would be published this May. He also posted this image (right; click for larger version).

Based on a character created by Richard Stark — a pseudonym used by Donald E. Westlake — The Score is the third book in this graphic novel series by Darwyn Cooke, following 2009's The Hunter and 2010's The Outfit.

Parker is a professional thief. He appeared in over 20 books by Stark/Westlake, several of which — most notably The Hunter, which also served as the basis for the first graphic novel in this series — were made into films.

Though we know nothing about the storyline in The Score other than what's depicted in the image above, we expect it will include elements of the plot in the 1964 novel of the same title.
