The North sea, many miles from the coast of Rotterdam. Mia, a beautiful medical student from Damascus, flings herself from the deck of a ferry. For £15,000, she had been promised a new life in England, a new job and more money than she could ever dream of. In reality, her destination had been the strip-clubs and brothels of England's seedy criminal underworld.

Mia is one of hundreds of young girls lured into the snare of a complex network of criminal activity. The NCA have called it Hydra: a name taken from Ancient mythology. A beast with many heads. The Hydra network spreads across Europe and the Middle East, supplying Class A and B drugs as well as firearms. For a high price, to match high demand, they also import women. To take down this national network, the NCA must send someone in undercover.

Ray Wilson, Chief Constable of the West Yorkshire Police, must gain the trust of Mike Pilling and his gang members, in order to collect incriminating evidence. But there are complications. Hydra is protected by an old trick: the honey trap. Politicians, police officers and members of the press have been bought and blackmailed at the highest level using incriminating photographs. In order to protect Wilson and the operation, this mission must be kept off the records. An accidental leak would cost him his life.

Can this by-the-book Detective work off the radar to incriminate, and destroy, the Hydra's international domination? With no protocol to protect him, Wilson is on his own.

The dead man is the manager of Tahiti's Paradise Coffee Plantation, producer of the most expensive coffee bean in the world, the winey, luscious Blue Devil. Nothing tangible points to foul play behind his fall from a cliff, but FBI agent John Lau, a relative of the coffee-growing family, has his suspicions. What he needs is evidence, and who better to provide it than his friend, anthropologist Gideon Oliver, the Skeleton Detective? Gideon is willing to help, but surprisingly — and suspiciously — both the police and the other family members refuse to okay an exhumation order. As a result, Gideon, to his surprise and against his better judgment, finds himself sneaking into a graveyard under cover of night with John, a flashlight, and a shovel — not exactly up to the professional standards of the world's most famous forensic anthropologist, but necessary under the circumstances.

Gideon prefers his bones ancient, dry, and dusty, but the body he must examine had lain in the tropical sun for a week before it was found and then buried native-style — shallow, with no casket — so it is not exactly his … well, cup of tea. But it is not the state of the remains that bothers him the most, it is the deeper human ugliness that his examination uncovers: subtle clues that do indeed point to foul play, to mistaken identity, and to a murderous conspiracy that may have percolated through the family for decades — and brewed a taste for murder.

Everything circles the drain as Buckner finds himself at war with the worst gang the city has to offer as well as the slithering rapist who has resurfaced just to tie the loose ends from the twenty year-old crime. Buckner doesn't back down, and if that means getting himself carjacked so he can interrogate the gang bangers, pose as the mogul's secret lover and chase the rapist into a women's shower room so he can beat him mercilessly, so be it. Please Welcome Mystery Author Teresa LaRue

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Teresa LaRue

We are delighted to welcome author Teresa LaRue to Omnimystery News today.

Teresa begins a new series this month with the publication of A Talent for Murder (Five Star; October 2015 hardcover) and we asked her to tell us more about the characters in her book. She replied with a guest post written from the perspective of her series character, Kate Spencer, titled "Feisty Southern Women".

Teresa LaRue

The South is full of strong, feisty women. I should know. I come from a long line of them. Not that I'd ever sling a bucket of ice at anyone like Camilla (my aunt's arch enemy), or retaliate with a pitcher of iced tea (Aunt Lula Mae), but I've been known to exchange a few verbal punches.

Outsiders often mistake our cheerful smiles and good manners for weakness. But that would be a costly mistake. Underneath all that hospitality can lurk a heart of gold — or ice.

The first tool in our arsenal is the "kill 'em with kindness" technique. Should it fail, we switch to the steely glare, which works particularly well at keeping offspring in line. My mother's used it on me enough times! Though, I can't complain, not if I want to keep enjoying all that fried chicken, seafood gumbo, and gooey brownies she makes.

Another technique is to talk so fast you throw them into a frenzy. Our natural rhythm being a slow, Southern drawl, it takes a lot of practice to perfect. But it's well worth the effort, let me tell you! Especially when your boyfriend demands that you stop interfering with his investigation. Did I mention Aunt Lula Mae was the main suspect in a murder, or that the victim was her arch enemy?

This is when the banty rooster stance comes in handy. While I stand a good five feet eight inches, somehow the method works better for petite women like my mother, who's been known to bring grown men to their knees.

And for those few occasions when something more physical is required, there's always the "knock 'em in the head with the nearest baseball bat" approach. My mother keeps hers, a Louisville slugger, locked in the trunk of her car, while I keep mine under the bed.

Every tool in the arsenal was deployed to keep my beloved aunt out of the slammer. That she would end up accused of murder is absurd! She's the kindest, most gentle woman I've ever known. Once, she marched into my biology class carrying a "save the frogs" sign and refused to leave until my teacher promised to cease all dissection and provide burials for every specimen.

So you see, my mother Happy and I had no choice but to plunge headlong into the investigation, despite the stern warning of my ex-boyfriend cop, who had the bad taste to, amid all that craziness, want to get back together.

Of course, our task might have been easier if Lula Mae and the deceased didn't have a long history of chasing after the same man, and if missing pieces of Camilla's jewelry hadn't turned up in Lula Mae's possession, but that's a story for another day.

Teresa LaRue grew up in a small town along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She's worked as a secretary, assistant manager of an audio book store, and manager of a fashion jewelry store. She is an avid reader, gardener, and movie buff. She lives across the lake from New Orleans with her husband, two of her children, a dog named Bones, and a cat named Chloe.

A wisecracking mystery writer and one of Boston's richest bluebloods share only one tie: her lifelong friend is his twin sister. When someone murders Cece Swann, Eja and Deming become the most uncommon team of sleuths in ye olde bean towne.

Cece had everything — looks, brains, and money galore. Her love of life was legendary, as was her rampant fear of heights. Leaping off a building was the last thing she would ever do. When she dies that way, Eja and Deming know it was neither suicide nor an accident.

Partnering to catch her killer plunges the pair into a major relationship shift. Gone is the exasperating big-brother figure from Eja's girlhood; now she's confronted with an irritating, irresistible grown man. Eja isn't gorgeous, blue-blooded, or glamorous; she's battling a few extra pounds and a set of lowered expectations about life in general and men in particular. But when it comes to loyalty and courage, she's as tough as a junkyard dog and twice as likely to bite. Can she resist taking a chunk out of her arrogant partner during the search for CeCe's killer?

Deming's film star looks and sense of entitlement drive her crazy. Now, however, the rules between them change as they unravel the trail of a ruthless murderer.
