It's a beautiful summer and the busy village of Marsden-Lacey, England, has murder on its mind. Someone just whacked everyone's least favorite villager, Sir Carstons, on his villainous head. That's when American expats, paralegal Martha Littleword and book expert Helen Ryes, find themselves knee-deep in Yorkshire murder. Spirited empty-nesters, they throw their newbie detective hats into the ring, only to discover that a murder mystery can quickly turn from adventurous lark into personal peril.

With a dash of Southern charm and humor, and the help of a few quirky villagers, the girls just might survive. They'll also have to figure out how to handle the local catch-of-the-day, Piers Cousins, and the cantankerous Chief of Police, DCI Johns. Will they or won't they? If they do, they might solve a murder, or two, along with a hundred-year-old mystery involving a Brontë sister and a famous piece of English history.

It is not just the living who are prey to London's criminals and cutpurses. Corpses, too, are fair game — dug up from fresh graves and sold to unscrupulous men of science. Dr. Thomas Silkstone abhors such methods, but his leading rival, Dr. John Hunter, has learned of the imminent death of eight-foot-tall Charles Byrne, known as the "Irish Giant," and will go to any lengths to obtain the body for his research.

Thomas intends to see that Byrne is allowed to rest in peace. Yet his efforts are complicated by concern for his betrothed, Lady Lydia Farrell, who breaks off their engagement without explanation. When Dr. Hunter is implicated in the horrific murder of a young castrato, Thomas must determine how far the increasingly erratic surgeon will go in the name of knowledge. For as Thomas knows too well, the blackest hearts sometimes go undetected — and even an unblemished façade can hide terrifying secrets …

Ex-Buddhist monk, former LAPD detective, and current private investigator Tenzing "Ten" Norbu knows Bill Bohannon as many things: loving husband, devoted father, police administrator, former partner, and best friend. But then an uninvited guest from Bill's past upends the Bohannons' Fourth of July barbecue, revealing in levelheaded Bill the most unexpected behavior — behavior that awkwardly drops Ten in the middle of a crumbling marriage.

Ten makes an unexpected move of his own when he agrees to pro bono work for a convicted felon. But it was dope slinger Godfrey Chambers Ten had repeatedly busted during his days on the force, not the reformed and rechristened G-Force who is now asking for Ten's help in claiming money left to him by a kind-hearted benefactor — and contested by the benefactor's self-serving family.

Soon Ten's investigations lead him down the darkest corridors of the Internet and halfway around the globe to Sarajevo as he navigates the seedy worlds of human trafficking and personal regret. As his cases intertwine, Ten will rely on the wisdom of the Buddha and his own network of relationships — with super hacker Mike, outrageously idiosyncratic assistant Kim, old monastery friends Yeshe and Lopsang, Serbian cabbie and former policija Petar, and, of course, feline rock Tank — to solve the puzzle and keep free of his own tangled past. Especially when an old flame returns.

As the sole members of LAPD's Special Cases Unit, Detective Michael Gideon and his German shepherd partner Sirius work investigations considered bizarre even by Los Angeles's standards. Yet their latest case is more than strange — it might be out of this world.

Ronald "Wrong" Pauley is a homeless man long fallen from grace. When Pauley's late-night drinking is interrupted by a detonation of light, he sees what he describes as a "being of light" in the alley below. Pauley tries to help, but ends up as a witness to what he believes is the murder of a fallen angel.

Gideon and Sirius are already in the midst of trying to determine the identity of the so-called "Reluctant Hero" who seemed to magically appear just moments after shots began ringing out at an elementary school. Braving gunfire, the hero tackled the shooter, and then disappeared.

Both cases defy easy answers, but when Pauley turns up dead, the detectives are left with two murders to solve and lots of questions. Gideon and Sirius — along with help from a newfound friend — investigate that thin line between the real and surreal to make sense of these possible crimes.

Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high lonely place, a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn's pursuit of a Wolf-Witch is leading him where even the bravest men fear, on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

Terrified she will harm her newly-adopted daughter in the throes of a PTSD flashback, Kymbria James travels to the far Northwood of Minnesota to work with a Native American healer. The windigo of tribal lore had awakened just days before Kymbria's arrival, perhaps drawn early into this forty-year cycle by the connection between them. All too soon Kymbria will uncover the reality of the fabled monster's existence and their shared past, risking all she gained in her fight to overcome her downslide into mental instability.

Silas McCoy is well aware of the new cycle of awakening. Indeed, he is in the Northwood at the agreement of Keoman Thunderwood, the Ojibway healer seeking to confront this cannibal windigo. The day he came home to his mountain cabin to find his wife and son taken by a different windigo, he vowed to find a way to eradicate the supposedly unstoppable monsters. Nothing but his own death will halt his quest for vengeance.

As the monster captures one after another tribal member and drags each off to its lair, Kymbria is finally forced into Silas's quest to learn how to destroy it. Even when she learns the truth her mother has kept hidden for forty years, she has no choice other than to continue. Somehow, even without Silas's assistance, she must confront both her emotional situation and the monster … if she can find the courage to do so.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games.
