More on today's free book, below.

Decades earlier Michael Charon was the head of a division of the CIA that fulfilled so many "wet" hit contracts it was code named "Water Works." Blindsided by a media leak after a covert mission gone bad, Charon found himself in the political crosshairs. The ensuing scandal created a firestorm in Washington which required a high profile scapegoat. To protect his team, Charon cut a deal. Instead of embarrassing The Company by pointing fingers or naming names, he fell on his own sword.

After a seven-year self-imposed exile, when he traveled throughout the Far East, Charon resurfaced in Washington. With unexplained but seemingly unlimited funding, he set up an ultra-high-end boutique security firm. With a knack for getting results in impossible situations and a history of keeping his mouth shut, the services of Sariel International were soon much in demand by the rich and the powerful of the world.

Charon's life is turned upside down when a beautiful but mysterious young woman appears unannounced at his office. He soon learns that members of his old Water Works team have come out of retirement and for unknown reasons are killing each other.

When he follows the trail, he discovers the identity of the person who had leaked the story years earlier and the startling reason why.

The president learned long ago that the CIA could not be trusted. And so he created his own group of deadly efficient men to gather independent intelligence: a watchdog organization to keep the CIA in check. R Section was born.

"There are no spies … "

Until he heard those four simple words, Devereaux thought he'd left his days in R Section behind. He was no longer The November Man, an American field officer in the vice-grip of duty and danger — and the most brilliant agent R Section had ever produced. When he receives the cryptic message from Hanley, his former handler, Devereaux has no idea he's about to be reactivated into a mission to save both his life and R Section itself. He's not aware that a beautiful KGB agent has been ordered to stalk and kill him — or that Hanley is now in a government-subsidized asylum for people with too many secrets. And he doesn't know that zero hour ticks closer for an operation to catch a master spy … with Devereaux the designated pawn.

What The November Man doesn't know can kill him.

When octogenarian sleuth Myrtle Clover discovers Naomi Pelter's dead body during a book club meeting, the other members seem shocked. But Myrtle can read between the lines. Naomi had riled everyone up by flirting with other people's husbands, arguing with neighbors, and generally making a nuisance of herself. Murdering troublemakers is the oldest trick in the book.

The book club members seem too sweet to be killers, but Myrtle knows better than to judge books by their covers. Myrtle's investigation into the murder will take a more novel approach than her police chief son's by-the-book methods. Can Myrtle and her widower sidekick uncover the killer … before he writes them off for good?
