Review: Big Maria by Johnny Shaw

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Big Maria by Johnny Shaw.

Review summary: The characters in this comic crime caper are vividly drawn and range from the barely tolerable to the almost endearing, the storyline exciting if often rather less than credible. Reading a preview is strongly recommended before committing to a purchase, as the style and tone are set early … and will likely determine whether or not one will enjoy what follows. Cinemystery: Carrie Remake Release Delayed to October

Carrie (2013)

Fans of Stephen King's Carrie will have to wait a little longer to see the film's remake: Sony has announced that the release date is being moved from this March 15th to October 18th, 2013. In one respect, this makes sense, to position the film as a Halloween-appropriate thriller. In another, well, let's just say it's rarely a positive move to delay a film's release date without a good explanation as to why.

In this reimagining of the classic horror tale, Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King (more details below), Carrie is directed by Kimberly Peirce with a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

New Poster for Crime Thriller Parker

Parker (January 2013)

A new poster for the crime thriller Parker has been released by the studio (right; click for larger version). The tagline: "To get away clean, you have to play dirty."

Jason Statham stars as Parker, a professional thief, who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don't steal from people who can't afford it and don't hurt people who don't deserve it. But on his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead.

Determined to make sure they regret it, Parker tracks them to Palm Beach, playground of the rich and famous, where the crew is planning their biggest heist ever. Donning the disguise of a rich Texan, Parker takes on an unlikely partner, Leslie (Jennifer Lopez), a savvy insider, who's short on cash, but big on looks, smarts and ambition. Together, they devise a plan to hijack the score, take everyone down and get away clean.

Directed by Taylor Hackford from an adapted screenplay by John J. MacLaughlin, and based on the novel Flashfire by Richard Stark — more details on the book, below — Parker opens in theaters January 25th, 2013.

Telemystery: New Promotional Video for Ripper Street

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

BBC America has released a new promotional video for its upcoming historical crime drama, Ripper Street.

History's most notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper tore through late 1880's London. Now, the detectives who were on the case have to pick up the pieces.

In the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders, can anyone keep order in the blood-stained London Streets?

Haunted by the failure to catch London's most evil killer, Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) now heads up the notorious H Division, the toughest district in London's East End. Charged with keeping order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel, Inspector Reid is soon drawn deep into the seedy criminal underworld of Victorian London — where fear always lurks that each new murder could mark the return of The Ripper.

Ripper Street premieres on BBC America on Saturday, January 19th at 9 PM (ET/PT).

UbiSoft Considering Adaptation of Ghost Recon Games for Film

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon

It's only a brief mention in a Los Angeles Times article on Ubisoft's game-to-film efforts, but it seems the popular Ghost Recon series of video games may be headed for a screen adaptation.

We've previously reported on Ubisoft's two other projects in development — Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fasbender and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell starring Tom Hardy — both of which, in addition to having stars attached, have scripts written. These films aren't expected to hit theaters until late 2014 at the earliest.

Ghost Recon is centered on a squad of U.S. Army Special Forces operators, whose missions are highly classified, so much so that the members are often considered "ghosts". First released in 2001, there are numerous iterations of the game available for various platforms.

Though three tie-in books have been written — more information about the first of these, below — it is not known if any would serve as the basis for a film.
