MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less (120929)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

A couple of notes before we get to today's list …

Endeavour Press is a small UK-based publisher, which has many ebooks priced $2.99 or less. We haven't included any on our weekly update, but we wanted to direct your attention to what they have to offer. We've read several of the "Raffles" and "Mycroft Holmes" novellas, and do recommend them.

Poisoned Pen Press once again this past week lowered the price on four more mysteries, the first two books in the "Héctor Belascoarán Shayne" series by Paco Ignacio Taibo II, and the first and third books in the "Cape Weathers" series by Tim Maleeny. Use this link to see all the books this publisher has lowered to $2.99 or less.

• There are a handful of titles from Bloomsbury included below, but we suspect they are simply price-matched to a promotion at Kobo this weekend. There's no overlap, however, so we could be wrong. Still, we'll check on Monday to see if they're still discounted and if not, we'll remove them from the list.

And now on to our update! Below are listed the new $2.99 or less titles we added today; click on the cover or title for more information or to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.

Alix London has a promising career as an art consultant, a sumptuous condo in Seattle's toniest neighborhood, a gorgeous figure, and a presence that exudes Ivy League breeding and old money. She has it all … or does she?

Only Alix knows that the image she presents to the world is a carefully constructed mirage that veils an embarrassing truth. A brilliant, once-promising art student, the daughter of a prominent New York art conservator, her world was left in ruins when her father went to prison for art forgery. Now a Harvard dropout with an emptied bank account, she is languishing in a career that has produced little more than a lucky house-sitting gig.

But all of that changes when Alix meets Christine Lemay, a novice art collector with money to burn and a hot tip on a recently discovered painting by American master Georgia O'Keeffe. Chris hires Alix to perform the authentication, an assignment that finally could launch Alix into the big leagues. But soon after her arrival in Santa Fe, she finds herself tangled up in a web of forgery, deceit—and murder. Anxious to avoid becoming the next victim, she teams up with FBI Special Agent Ted Ellesworth—and gets a little unlikely help from her roguish father—to uncover the truth behind the painting and those who would kill to have it.

Beatnik detective Sunny Pascal is an expert at two things: cocktails and finding trouble. And when the filming of John Huston's The Night of the Iguana hits a few snags with its sexed-up, star-studded cast in a Puerto Vallarta paradise, producer Ray Stark brings Sunny in to chill out the set. But matters get tipsy when someone's found deader than dead, shot down by a gun belonging to one of the cast members.

Now Sunny's got to keep his Hollywood stars out of jail long enough for him to solve the case. But the trouble doesn't stop with murder. The Mexican mafia and local newspapers wage a tension war against the hedonistic Americans, and if John Huston has anything to say about it, Sunny's got to be the one to keep the show on the road. Only Sunny will be doing it his way: with a martini in one hand and a Colt in the other.

Things are going pretty well for Nicholas Colt. He has a loving relationship with his wife, his blues band has a house gig at a club in Jacksonville, and his adopted daughter is finishing her senior year in high school. He has no intention of reactivating his PI licensee, and he certainly has no plans to travel to Tennessee to investigate a double homicide and an old girlfriend's missing brother.

Until she tells him something that makes his heart pause and his jaw drop.

Are the Harvest Angels, the white supremacist militia that Colt shut down three years ago, back in business?

Colt makes the trip to the mountains and soon thinks he has it solved: typical copycat case. Unfortunately, another unimaginable atrocity is waiting for him back home in Florida. Colt walks into a bloodbath, and he soon realizes nothing is typical and nothing is solved.

While relentlessly hunting down those responsible, Colt is abducted, drugged, and brainwashed before he can alert the authorities. Now he is a pawn in a heinous scheme that is bigger, badder, and literally more earth-shattering than he could have possibly anticipated.

Half-gypsy detective Eoin Miller finds people for a living—usually people who would do anything to remain hidden. Ironic considering Eoin has done all he can to lose himself in a downward spiral that has cost him his job, his respect, his wife, and anything else that ever mattered. But he's not inclined to dwell on what he's given up, and Eoin prefers it that way.

Then he meets Mary, a hard-drinking woman on the run who confides that she's stolen a valuable item, one that certain people would kill to get back. The two of them seek a temporary—and incomplete—solace in each other's arms, only for Mary to turn up as a corpse in Eoin's bed the next morning, him asleep on the sofa.

Recalling his father's aversion to authority, Eoin runs from the body, but he hates a mystery and is driven to discover the truth behind Mary's murder, even if it means putting his own life on the line. Before long, Eoin's tangled up in a ferocious turf war that has him playing his former allies and employers—crime lords, drug dealers, cops, and politicians—against each other.

Review: Last Lawyer Standing by Douglas Corleone

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Last Lawyer Standing by Douglas Corleone. A Kevin Corvelli Mystery.

Review summary: This sharply written legal thriller has Honolulu criminal defense attorney Kevin Corvelli at his best in the courtroom, but even his action scenes are well scripted and executed, helped mostly by the presence of a new — and hopefully recurring — character. A Kevin Corvelli Mystery
Minotaur Books (August 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Defense attorney Kevin Corvelli fled from New York to Hawaii after the sensational death of one of his clients three years ago. Now, in the wake of another client’s death — a client Kevin had fallen in love with — Kevin would run again if only he could pull himself free from a couple of high-profile, high-risk cases. The FBI is investigating the poisoning of a young woman who happened to be Governor Wade Omphrey’s mistress. The governor was off the island at the time, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t order the hit or that he doesn’t need a hotshot lawyer like Corvelli defending him.

Then the DEA raids a local meth lab and Turi Ahina is picked up in the sweep. A career criminal, Ahina has set Corvelli up with plenty of client referrals, but Corvelli owes him for much more than that ever since Ahina saved his life. Now Ahina’s only way out is to turn in the big man, and he can’t just tell the FBI who it is—they already know that. He needs to find him and set a trap, a trap that won’t succeed without Corvelli’s help. The plan is simple, as foolproof and dangerous as a suicide attempt.

As the stakes rise, Corvelli gets drawn in deeper and deeper until the only way he can escape is to stick it out to the end …
