Don Winslow Wins Courmayeur Noir Film Festival Raymond Chandler Award

Mystery, Suspense and Thriller Book Awards

Here's some award news we missed from a couple days ago.

Crime novelist Don Winslow has been honored with the Raymond Chandler Award, which he will receive at the Courmayeur Noir Film Festival later this year. The best of cinema and literature in the field of thriller, mystery, espionage, horror and science fiction noir is featured at the festival in the Italian Alps.

"I've always believed in a powerful osmosis between noir and cinema," said Winslow, "and personally I think that my writing style was very much influenced by the big screen. Unconsciously, because I grew up with movies; consciously, because I've been contaminated by the works of directors such as Truffaut, Fellini and John Woo. Films like and La Strada encouraged me to take risks with the creative structure of my novels, especially Savages."

Destined for a trust fund that was taking too damn long to kick in, he spent years eking out a living in Seattle as a private investigator. Along the way he managed to survive countless run-ins with murderers, drug dealers, and jealous wives. But when Rebecca, the love of his life, dumped him to marry someone else … that was a different story. Still, he took it like a man, eventually collecting his family money and slipping into semi-retirement—until the day an unwelcome visitor brings him the worst possible news.

Rebecca has vanished and no one, not even her manipulative, overprotective mother, can find a trace of her. Together with his band of informers and sidekicks (in truth a rather motley crew of homeless drunks and reprobates), Leo wades back into the game, determined to save Rebecca once and for all.

But her trail is a twisted one, thick with deception and depravity that winds from the rain-swept streets of Seattle to the murky depths of the great North Woods. The stink of it all seems to emanate from none other than Rebecca's new husband, Brett Ward, whose tangle of lies will cast Leo into the path of a ruthless gang that will stop at nothing — not even murder — to protect what's theirs.

Why did a nun in a seventeenth-century convent flagellate herself until her blood spattered the wall? Why did nuns save a child doomed to death in the Holocaust and who wanted her killed? Who wants a lost head-shaped reliquary that holds something other than a head? And are answers to these questions the key to a terrible modern-day death in a quiet archive?

When American historian Pandora (Dory) Ryan finds a very rare, uncataloged seventeeth century nun’s diary inside a record book at the provincial archives in Avignon, she is thrilled. This is historian’s treasure. But she doesn’t know yet that it will send her on a search that brings about changes in how she feels about her profession, the irrational, and love with a sexy Frenchman. And it will take her from the archive on a dangerous adventure into the countryside of Provence, which, beautiful as it is, has a long and bloody history.

The archive’s dramatis personae: the grumpy archivist, with his paper-clip chains; the gofer, who smokes Gauloises and gets away with far too much; a nun with a sense of humor who harangues high school kids about sex; the nun's glamorous sidekick; a famous American historian, whose requests for documents are inexplicably denied; the eminent professor, destined to fall in love; his nervous graduate student. And that sexy Frenchman, who isn’t who he says he is.
