The Donzerly Light appears to have been published as an original ebook (i.e. no print edition). The author may be best known for his series of thrillers featuring FBI Agent Art Jefferson, one of which, Simple Simon, was adapted into the film Mercury Rising starring Bruce Willis as Jefferson (renamed Jeffries in the movie).

About The Donzerly Light (from the publisher): With a destitute childhood and the tragic loss of his parents a distant but constant memory, Jay Grady has come to Wall Street to make a name, and a fortune, for himself. But the success he’d imagined is frustratingly elusive.

Until he meets the bum. An enigmatic transient who occupies a Manhattan corner, offering puzzling morsels of wisdom on a sign he changes daily. Drawn to the bum one day by a familiar snippet on his sign, Jay gives the man some spare change.

What he gets in return shakes him to his core.

Suddenly gifted with some power of prescience, Jay becomes the darling of Wall Street, picking winning stocks as if he can glimpse the future.

Or shape it.

But the dark side of this gift reveals itself as a curse when Jay tries to turn away from what he’s been given, leading the bum to reach into his life with murderous results. Running from the horrific reality that his power now unleashes, Jay finds his flight coming full circle as he must face the man, the thing, that set him on this path.

A Sharyn Howard Mystery (3rd in series)

But before she can investigate, the self-confessed murderer hangs himself in the interview room.

The coroner has a double shock for the sheriff: the body doesn't belong to the boy the murderer thought he'd killed, and the murderer was dead before he was hanged. When the judge barely survives a fire, Sharyn fears for her deputy's life, too. Soon, the dark deeds of past and present collide as a killer plots a final act of retribution that Sharyn may be too late to stop.

Scared Stiff by Annelise Ryan
A Mattie Winston Mystery (2nd in series)
Kensington

There are two Kindle editions available (not sure why): one from September 2010 (which is currently the free one, and the one to which we've linked) and one from August 2011 (which is not free).

About Scared Stiff (from the publisher): Halloween night in Sorenson, Wisconsin, usually resembles any other small town: trick-or-treaters, costume parties, and lots of cheerfully scary decorations. But Deputy Coroner Mattie Winston is finding this year a little different, because among all the fake carnage is a very real, very dead body …

When Mattie and her boss/best friend, Izzy, are called to the home of waitress and part-time model Shannon Tolliver, they find the ghoulish decorations just a bit too authentic. For among the fake blood and skeletons is the corpse of Shannon herself — and the evidence screams murder.

Since the whole town knows Shannon recently had a very public argument with her estranged husband, Erik, he's suspect #1 for homicide detective Steve Hurley. Tall, dark, and blissfully blue-eyed detective Steve Hurley, that is … But Mattie happens to know Erik truly loved his wife, and is simply incapable of the brutal act — even though he owns the exact same caliber handgun as the murder weapon …

Determined to unearth the truth — and maybe spend a little quality time with Detective Hunky — Mattie puts her scalpel-sharp medical skills to work, and digs a little deeper. What she uncovers is stranger than anyone could have imagined …

It seems Shannon's murder is just the tip of a very fatal iceberg. Now, in order to solve a case that's getting more dangerous by the minute — and to save Erik from the slammer — Mattie will have to risk everything to catch a killer who's capable of doing anything once he's cornered. And this time, it's not just Mattie's life that's on the line.

Vera Set One on DVD

This DVD set of four 90-minute episodes, three of which are adapted from a series of crime novels by Ann Cleeves and, possibly not coincidentally, that are also the best three episodes of the four, is notable for the outstanding performance of Brenda Blethyn as the titular character.
