One of its many great & unique attributes is that both the chraracters and the story itself consumes the reader. It may make for a tighter story, but a good B story can really add to reader understanding of the protagonist. I'm anxious to read WHITE HEAT and to see the POV changes you mentioned. I totally enjoyed White Heat and thought the interlacing of the two stories made for a "real feel" book. The B story never took away from the main action and I just assumed it had a part to play, which it did.
