We still haven't seen the English-language film adaptation of the first in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium Trilogy", The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, life getting in the way, as it were. But we have been following news about the film, and are aware that it isn't doing nearly the box office business that had been expected (or had been hoped) given the broad and popular appeal of the source material and the star power of the actors in the lead roles.
Which, of course, leads one to question whether the studio is still planning on adapting the second and third books of the trilogy.
EW.com yesterday published an update from Sony on the prospects for the films. "[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book," a Sony representative told EW. The screenplay adaptation is being written for The Girl Who Played with Fire and Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are already locked into reprising their roles in the sequels (though no director has signed on yet).
We're hoping to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this coming weekend. The trick for us will be to not compare it to the original Swedish-language adaptation, which we really enjoyed. As for the English-language sequels, we'll keep you posted on their progress.
