Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in this sequel to 2009's film. Though Holmes has always been the smartest man int he room, there is a new criminal mastermind at large — Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) — and not only is he Holmes's intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Holmes's investigation into Moriarty's plot becomes ever more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London and across Europe, to France, Germany and finally to Switzerland.

But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction — all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

About Model Agent (from the publisher): The human body consists of two-thirds water.

As concertgoers on a steamy day in Boston find out, water can kill as much as it gives life.

A terrorist attack at City Hall Plaza has the authorities perplexed. The government, in response, sends in a capable but young agent — an agent born from the ashes of terrorism itself — to handle it.

But as her partner dies and the terrorist strikes again, Jaclyn Johnson — code named Snapshot — finds herself in a situation she has trained a decade to face: She’s up against a man with enough money to finance a war against his competition. With a deadline in place to stop him — and with a car holding enough hidden tricks to evade capture — Snapshot infiltrates his hidden installation and finds out her target’s true end game, a secret that could have the world fighting over water.

A Rafe Ruenrostro Mystery (1st in series)
Arte Publico Press (Trade Paperback)
Publication Date: November 2011
ISBN-13: 978-1-55885-741-4

Partners in Crime by Rolando Hinojosa

About Partners in Crime (from the publisher): It's a cool Monday morning in October 1972, and the Belken County Homicide Squad is dealing with a dead body found in an abandoned car in the middle of a cotton field. Lieutenant Detective Rafe Buenrostro and the four other men making up the squad are accustomed to corpses, even though they live and work in a mostly rural area of South Texas along the Mexican border.

The bloody scene at the Kum Bak Inn is a different story, though, and one that is impossible to get used to: three men — including one of their own — slaughtered so brutally that their faces, arms, legs and even genitalia have been completely severed from their bodies. Two witnesses spared this horrific death are able to provide first-hand descriptions of the killers: three Mexican nationals, armed with machine guns, driving a cream-colored, four-door Oldsmobile.

These clues send Rafe and his colleagues down a twisting path strewn with leads and assumptions, many of which lead to dead ends after patient, plodding examination. But it's a meeting with their Mexican counterpart, Captain Lisandro Gomez Solís of the Tamaulipas State Police, which sets them on the trail that will eventually lead them to the killers. The way is littered with suspects and shady characters, including a veteran car thief, unsuspecting drug mules, dirty bank tellers and double-crossing Mexican gangsters.

OMN Welcomes Mystery Author William I. Lengeman III

Omnimystery News: Authors on Tour

Omnimystery News is pleased to welcome William I. Lengeman III, author of the novella Murder at Terra Vista Station (Furry Minister Press eBook, November 2011), an Arley Ferminster murder mystery set in space.

Today William writes about William Shakespeare, Rex Stout, the novella and … well … himself!

— ◊ —

What makes a man write a novella? Well, let me tell you all about it. I was inspired to do so, as the title of this piece suggests, by two people. There's Shakespeare, who probably needs no introduction, and whose Polonius says, in Hamlet, that brevity is the soul of wit. I will be brief in saying that I agree.

William I. Lengeman III

William I. Lengeman III

I tend to brevity in all things, whether in spoken or written word. I used to amuse myself writing works of flash and micro fiction, some of which clocked in at less than 100 words. Arley Ferminster, the amateur detective who stars in Murder at Terra Vista Station, actually started life as a character in a screenplay, which I wrote and set aside long ago. When I decided that I'd like to try my hand at writing a mystery I thought back to Mr. Ferminster and decided that I liked him too much to allow him to languish in obscurity.

So I resurrected the old fellow and set to work. My first thought was to write a novel, simply because that is what one does and because none of the ideas I had in mind could be shoehorned into a short story. After dilly-dallying with this alleged novel for a while I said the hell with it and set it aside. Some time later I was motivated to bring Arley back yet again and gave it another go. Which is where Rex Stout enters the picture.

If you've read any of Stout's Nero Wolfe works there's a pretty good chance that you've read one of the novellas. Many first appeared in magazines and were later collected in books, usually containing three novellas each. Stout actually wrote more novellas (about 40) than he did of the Nero Wolfe novels (33). Over the last two years I went on something of a Nero Wolfe binge and ended up reading all but about ten of the nearly 50 books that Stout published.

It's always a bad idea to generalize and there are certainly notable exceptions, but for me it always seemed that Stout turned out a better yarn when he was working at the novella length. In any event, he provided me with the impetus to take a crack at writing one. The other motivation was that I didn't feel that my story needed the full novel length to be told properly. I'm sure I'm not the only mystery reader who can point to a padded novel that would have worked better at novella length and I didn't want anyone pointing those fingers at me.

My decision was also motivated by the fact that, initially at least, the novellas will be published only in electronic format. I realize that there are limitations to this method of publishing but what little sense I possess tells me that for an unknown author to pursue the traditional publishing route for a work of novella length is like (pardon the expression) pissing up a rope.

Murder at Terra Vista Station by William I. Lengeman III

Amazon.com Print and/or Kindle Edition

About Murder at Terra Vista Station:

Few people can say that they got rich inventing an electric toilet bowl brush. In fact, Arley Ferminster is pretty much the only one.

Arley has moved on to other projects now, including the IntelliVac, a remote-controlled vacuum cleaner with artificial intelligence (sort of). There's also the HoverChair, the bastard child of a hovercraft and a wheelchair. Most recently, there's The Gadget Guy, a TV show he's hosting for the cable channel GeekTV. Amidst all of this Arley and his assistant Martin Grading manage to set aside some time to visit Terra Vista Station, the first commercial space hotel. This might have made for a very pleasant experience, if it wasn't for one of the other visitors being given some assistance in shuffling off of this mortal coil.

So who's responsible for the groundbreaking first murder in space? Will they strike again? Since there's no one else on board who's qualified to answer those questions, Martin and mystery fan Arley take it upon themselves to sort things out.

Film Adaptation of Martin Amis's London Fields Gets New Director

London Fields by Martin Amis

A film adaptation of Martin Amis's 1989 novel London Fields is set to move forward with a new director: Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth). "I am looking forward to this project because I have never directed a murder mystery before," he says. No production date was announced.

The book is set at the end of the millennium. There is a murderer, there is a murderee, and there is a foil. Everyone is always out there searching for someone and something, usually for a lover, usually for love. And this is a love story. But the murderee — Nicola Six — is searching for something and someone else: her murderer. She knows the time, she knows the place, she knows the motive, she knows the means. She just doesn't know the man. The murderer may be Keith Talent, a violent lowlife whose only passions are pornography and darts. Or is the killer the rich, honorable, and dimly romantic Guy Clinch?

It is a book in which the narrator, Samson Young, enters the Black Cross, a thoroughly undesirable public house, and finds the main players of his drama assembled … just waiting to begin.

OMN Welcomes Dale Phillips, Author of the Zack Taylor Mysteries

Omnimystery News: Authors on Tour

Omnimystery News is pleased to welcome mystery author Dale Phillips, who introduces ex-con Zack Taylor in A Memory of Grief (Briona Glen Publishing, June 2011 print and ebook editions).

Today Dale writes about character development.

— ◊ —

Many protagonists in mystery fiction whip out a gun when they're threatened, and the problem is instantly solved. Effective? Yes. Original? No. Boring? Possibly.

Or they'll call upon their ever-ready lethal sidekick to do even more deadly shooting, none of which ever seems to land them in serious trouble with the police.

Dale Phillips
Photo provided courtesy of
Dale Phillips

For my first series, I wanted something different, someone who would get into dangerous trouble and would have to use his physical and mental abilities to get out of it, rather than his shooting skills. It's more challenging for the protagonist, and for me as the writer.

So I created ex-con Zack Taylor, the hero of my novel A Memory of Grief, who has a lot of problems. The biggest one is that he hates guns, but gets into trouble with people who use them.

The same tragedy in his past that gave Zack his hatred of guns also encumbered him with a lifetime of guilt and self-destructive anger. He's gone from nearly drinking himself to death to a short stint in prison. Trying for some control of his life, he turned to the martial arts, and now uses his physical skills to make a living. He has survived by being emotionally detached and forming few bonds, and has drifted through life.

The death of his best friend, branded a suicide, drives Zack to uncover the truth. Traveling to Maine, where his friend died, Zack is a fish out of water, with no information, no connections, and no credibility. He must handle his grief and his growing frustration, while trying to smoke out a killer.

In the Zack Taylor series, I wanted to portray a conflicted man haunted by ghosts and inner demons. Someone who struggled every day with a heavy burden, and yet, because of his basic decency, a man who managed to find a way to live and to help others as he went on.

The sense of place in this series is important. Zack has spent too much time in cities like Las Vegas and Miami, with the wrong people. Despite being a complete outsider, Zack finds that the different environment of Maine is a balm for his difficulties, and he begins to sense the possibility of a more normal life. If he can survive.

Each title in this series echoes the theme of the book, and is taken from literature. A Memory of Grief is from the Epic of Gilgamesh, our oldest recorded tale. Future titles will be sourced from the Bible, Plato, Emily Dickinson, and Shakespeare, among others. Despite being a man of action, Zack has spent a lot of time alone with books, and his solitary existence has made him quite a reader.

Although A Memory of Grief was only recently released, Book 2 of the Zack Taylor series, A Fall From Grace is already at the publisher, and will be released soon. That's the advantage of going with a small publisher—you don't have to wait a year or more between books! Book 3, A Shadow on the Wall, should be out early next year, with more to come.

For influences, this series owes a huge debt to the late John D. MacDonald and his much-loved Travis McGee tales. Anyone who enjoys those books should find themselves in a comfortably familiar neighborhood with Zack's adventures. Homage must also be paid to the lineage of the tough guy in mysteries, a long line that stretches from Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler to Robert B. Parker's Spenser and James Lee Burke's Dave Robichaux.

— ◊ —

Dale has recently published his first novel with another out soon, over 20 short stories, poetry, and a non-fiction career ebook out on Smashwords. He's appeared on stage, television, and in the independent feature film Throg. He competed on Jeopardy and Think Twice. He co-wrote and acted in The Nine, available at Libertynewstv.com. He's traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada, and throughout Europe. More information can be found about Dale at DaleTPhillips.com.

About A Memory of Grief:

Troubled ex-con Zack Taylor is haunted by the accidental death of his brother years before. Zack's guilt and anger have pushed him into a shadowy, wandering life, with little purpose and few attachments. When he hears of the death of his close friend Ben Sterling, a supposed gunshot suicide, Zack finds he now has a purpose — to find out what happened. Then his purpose becomes an obsession.

Zack goes to Maine, where Ben died, and is a fish out of water, with no connections, no information, and no credibility. People don't want to talk about Ben's death, so Zack gets ever more frustrated, making enemies, getting into fights, and breaking the law in his search for the truth. The only bright spot seems the potential for a relationship with a sympathetic nurse — if he can control his violent streak. To draw out the killers, Zack offers himself as bait. But without a gun, he must rely on his wits and his physical skills to survive a dangerous game of drugs and death. Though managing a measure of justice, Zack is changed in the process, and must learn to live in a very different world.

TNT Extends Mystery Movie Night with Four New Crime Novel Adaptations

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Just minutes after posting about the premiere of TNT's Mystery Movie Night, we learned that the cable network is ordering another made-for-television adaptation of a popular crime novel: Hornet's Nest by Patricia Cornwell.

Hornet's Nest, published in 1997 and the first of three mysteries in the series, introduces reporter Andy Brazil (to be played by Robbie Amell) and police chief Judy Hammer (Virginia Madsen). Set in Charlotte (NC), the story opens with everyone desperate to solve the latest crisis: a serial killer is specializing in out-of-town businessmen. Hammer and her deputy Virginia West (Sherry Stringfield) make the murder investigation their top priority. But West is less than pleased when Hammer pairs her up with Brazil, a cub reporter assigned to cover the police department.

In addition to the adaptation of Hornet's Nest, three other movies will be produced (though their titles were not released). No air dates were mentioned other than Spring 2012.

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Tomorrow, Tuesday November 29th at 9 PM (ET/PT), TNT premieres Innocent, the first of its made-for-television movie adaptations of bestselling crime novels.

Based on the book of the same title by Scott Turow, Bill Pullman stars as Rusty Sabich — the character played by Harrison Ford in the film adaptation of Presumed Innocent, for which Innocent is considered a sequel — a judge charged with the murder of his wife, a situation that comes 20 years after he was cleared in the death of his mistress. During this latest trial, a secret affair from Rusty's recent past threatens to hamper his defense and fracture his relationship with his son.

Just a day later, on Wednesday November 30th at 9 PM (ET/PT), an adaptation of Ricochet by Sandra Brown airs. Two homicide detectives find their careers — and lives — on the line when they get caught up in a case of murder and betrayal in high-society Savannah.

The other movies in the series, and their air dates, are Hide by Lisa Gardner (Tuesday, December 6th); Silent Witness by Richard North Patterson (Wednesday, December 7th); Good Morning, Killer by April Smith (Tuesday, December 13th); and Deck the Halls by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark (Tuesday, December 20th).

Telemystery: Mission: Impossible '88, New This Week on DVD

Telemystery, your source for one of the most comprehensive listings of crime drama, amateur sleuth, private investigator, mystery and suspense television series, mini-series and made-for-television movies, now available on or coming soon to DVD or Blu-ray disc, is profiling one series season being released this week.

— ◊ —

Mission: Impossible ('88): Season One, a Telemystery Crime Series

Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) reassembles the IMF team in Mission: Impossible ('88), a remake (or update, if you prefer) of the classic CBS series from two decades earlier.

The series originated from the writers' strike of the same year, which forced television producers to look to previously written material for scripts. For the most part it worked in this case, as the scenarios in which the IMF operated could easily be updated with modern gadgetry and a new setting. Once the strike was settled, the season finished off with new scripts written for Phelps and his team of operatives.

Mission: Impossible ('88): Season One is available on DVD and consists of 19 episodes that originally aired on ABC from Ocdtober 1988 through May 1989.
