The only reality show to date that had a real mystery or suspense theme to it was The Mole, an ABC series that aired its original format for two seasons. Several celebrity versions and knock-offs followed, but couldn't match the quality of the original. Contestants needed to complete a series of (often) complex challenges to move on in the game. One of them, however, was a "mole", someone whose role it was to sabotage as secretly as possible the tasks being completed. At the end of each challenge, contestants were asked a series of questions intended to expose the mole; the one answering the least correctly was eliminated. Anderson Cooper was the host.
The first season of The Mole has been available on DVD for some time, but all nine episodes are now available to see online for free on Hulu or Fancast. It's well worth watching. (Full-length episodes of series often disappear without notice from Hulu and Fancast, so we can't be sure how long it will be available.) You can view the first episode below:
